II. Subject Matter MODULE 4: Ecosystem: Life Energy

Plant: Its Parts, Function and Structure Involved in Food Making Process
A. Concepts  Plants play an important role in the ecosystem. They produce the
needed chemical energy in the form of food for the living organisms to
use. Plants like other living organisms they composed of different parts
that performed particular functions.
 The major parts of the plants include:
 Roots - the structure that grow deeply into the soil that acquire
nutrients through absorption. Its anchorage the plant to the soil.
 Stem- the structure responsible in transporting water nutrients
from the roots to leaves and vice versa.
 Leaf - a usually flat, green, plant structure used in photosynthesis
and transpiration (breathing)
 Flower - the showy, usually colorful part of a plant that is used for
producing and receiving pollen.
 Plants are independent living things. They can make their own food.
The leaves have been pinpointed as the chief site of the food making
process. This possible because of a green materials in them called
chlorophyll.
 Chlorophylls are pigment that gives there green color. It is also in
charge of trapping sunlight that plant use to make their own food. And
located in the organelle called chloroplast.
 Chloroplast is a double membrane organelle that contained the disk
shaped structure called thylakoid. Where the chloroplast pigment
found in its membrane. A stacks or piles of thylakoids are commonly
called grana (granum).Grana (granum) are embedded in a gel called
the stroma.

B. Materials Manila Paper; Marker, Charts (Chlorophyll, Chloroplast, Stomata and

Cross-section of the leaf), Multi-Media, LCD Projector: Downloaded

into six groups.
2. Attendance checking per group
3. Inform students about their incentive chart
4. Reminds the each member of the group members about their task.

B. Mind Pick Question? It’s More Fun in Zamboanga!!

board which pertains to the different common places or tourist spot
in Zamboanga City. After which let students answer the guide
questions.
(Flashed on screen the downloaded picture given below)

7. What benefit can we get from plants?
(Plant makes our surrounding beautiful; some serve as food; it has
different parts, etc.)
8. How can we protect our plants in our environment?
(Watering them, don’t remove plant from their natural habitat, etc.)

C. UNLOCKING OF IMPORTANT TERMS: JUMBBLED LETTERS

- Teacher will provide each group with envelope of letters. Then, ask
each group to arrange the letters to form the correct word and ask
one member to post the word on the board.

Standard: The first group to finish will receive points. Reminds the
each member of the group members to cooperate and do the task with
minimal noise.

- The following are the important terms;

1. Absorption
2. Anchorage
3. Transpiration
4. Vascular Tissues
5. Chloroplast
6. Chlorophyll

- After guessing the scrambled words teacher will ask the students
what they know about the term.

Absorption - is a biological process which can define as the uptake of

the capillary water by the root hairs of a plant from the soil
Anchorage – support the plant firmly in the soil.
Transpiration- the process called where plants loss water through its
leaves.
Vascular Tissues- refer to xylem and phloem responsible for moving
water, mineral and other products in vascular plants.
Chloroplast- an organelle of plant cell.
Chlorophyll – green pigment

 “What do you call this structure?’’
( Flower, Stem, Leaves and roots)
 “How this structure perform it function in plant?”

Flower –( the showy, usually colorful

part of a plant is used for
producing and receiving pollen)
Stem- (itis responsible in transporting
water nutrients from the roots
leaves and vice versa)
Leaves- (it is the structure involve in food making
activity of the plant).

Roots –( it grow deeply into the that

nutrients absorption. It serve as
anchorage of the plant to the soil).

Processing Questions
1. What organ of plant is involved in the food making process?
(Leaf / leaves)
2. How does the internal structure of leaf looks like?
(The internal structure of the leaf are composed of two mesophyll
layers, palisade and spongy mesophyll , with vascular bundle
(xylem and phloem )

3. How do you describe the arrangement of the mesophyll cells in the

upper epidermis? Lower epidermis?
(Palisade Mesophyll: This mesophyll located just below epidermis
and have column shaped, elongated cells which contain
chloroplast. Because of the presence of chloroplast, most
photosynthesis takes place here. These are closely packed cells
with small intercellular spaces in between them. While Spongy
Mesophyll, the second type of mesophyll tissue which is composed
of closely Compare to palisade tissues, they have less amount of
chloroplast but act as storage of carbohydrates made by
photosynthesis)
4. How will the upper and lower epidermis protect the leaf?
(The leaf produced thick waxy called Cuticle, water-repelling layer
which covers leaves and protects them from drying out by reducing
water loss).

8
5. What structure is abundant in the palisade mesophyll layer?
( Chloroplast)
6. What are chloroplasts?
(Organelles containing the chlorophyll which is also the site of
photosynthesis)
7. What are the parts of the chloroplast?
(Chloroplast is a double membrane organelle that contained the
disk shaped structure called thylakoid. Where the chloroplast
pigment found in its membrane. A stacks or piles of thylakoids are
commonly called grana (granum).Grana (granum) are embedded in
a gel called the stroma.)
8. How important is the chlorophyll in the food making process?
(it captures the sun’s energy called photon)
