Reflective Essay

My goal was to improve my writing with this course. I did not see an improvement in my own
writing but I received an exposure to other types of writing. Although I focused on the audience
and topic, there was some irrelevant information included in my writing; this was an accelerated
course and the white paper assignment was difficult because I wrote it without understanding the
format of a white paper. Moreover, I struggled in the planning phase of the writing process of the
white paper because my topic, Gold, was broad and when I narrowed it down to gold mining, I
felt like I knew nothing but its definition. This class helped develop the skill of researching;
through researching, the journey continues because writing is a process that empowers the mind
to action. Research updates the writing and adds credibility to the writer. The criticism I received
from my peers gave a positive feedback when it came to focusing on the audience.

I wrote four assignments that focused on my theme of identifying and suggesting solutions in
solving the problems of gold mining worldwide and advocating for the environment. Out of all
the assignments, I am proud of the correspondence packet because it showed my ability to blend
information and make up a story that could be convincing. Personally, it was interesting to me
because I had combined everything I knew concerning Gold and Leber Jeweler Inc. For the
correspondence packet, I wrote an email and a letter. For the email, I imagined the company I
represented ran out of resources to make their jewelry. I escalated the problem by claiming the
city of Chicago had limited supply as well. I did some research and came across a South African
gold mine company wanting to sell the deepest gold mine in the world. I took that idea and
created a story of Leber Jeweler Inc. trying to make a negotiation between company that owned
gold mines and wanted to expand the company through a merge of operations. All of my written
works shared a common goal from the outline of the white paper packet. I focused on my
experiences and suggested different ways to solve problems. Research supported my beliefs as
personal experiences represented my inner voice through the technical writing process.

Nevertheless, if I could add any assignment to this course, it will be an argumentative writing
assignment. I believe argumentative and persuasive writing go together. I will edit the memo
packet assignment and make the assignment as individual assignment. I enjoyed the visualization
assignment but wished there was more time for the assignment. I also recommend the Writing
Center and encouraged students to visit and check over their essays through the writing process.

In conclusion, this essay reflects on the four assignments written during the summer semester of
two thousand and nineteen. It shows the development of the writer and encourages other students
to take the opportunity to redefine their writing through the tutelage of the teacher and other
tutors. The use of plain language determined the intended audience and the research skill updated
the writer ideas and showed how the author can write about a topic.
