CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter gives the backbone of the study by presenting the rationale of

the topic under observation. Theoretical and conceptual paradigm that denotes the

probable outcome of the study, statement of the problem, objectives, scope and

limitations to gather the scientific parameters of the subject matter and the

definition of terms being used.

Introduction

Over the years, there has been a drastic improvement in technology.

Information Technology (IT) is everywhere and has dramatically altered the way

we live. With its advancement, the growing trend in World Wide Web has increased

knowledge acquisition, sharing and transfer of information has become easier than

before. People from different walks of life can now easily communicate with other

people and share their thoughts.

Technology brought social media which is a valuable tool for communication

but it is somewhat misused by today's youth. Social media, especially Facebook,

has become an integral part of everyday life of many.

According to statistics, Facebook is currently the largest online social

network with over two billion active users worldwide. In Facebook, everyone can

share their thoughts, talk or video call with other people, can upload their pictures,

can like, share and comment other people's post, can play and join to other

people's group and extend one's circle and can add, remove or block one's so-

called friends. Facebook has been found to fortify one's self-esteem, enforce group

identity and increase trust and cooperation. This medium has become value

element of life in students merely because it open doors to youth and allow them

to interact freely at any other time of history. Previous researches investigated the

motives of using Facebook which includes loneliness, pass time, socialization,

information seeking, entertainment and relax/escape.

However, despite of the advantages, problems are highlighted faced by

students from the use of Facebook to the detrimental of social adjustment and

academic performances. For example, (1.) excessive texting is associated with

unhealthy behaviors among the youngsters, encompassing higher levels of stress,

poor academics and poor sleeping patterns. (2.) the design of Facebook's news

feed creates an overwhelming emphasis on the positive experience of others

which may give rise to envy, rumination and jealousy as well as depression and

anxiety.
Due to the high demand of this medium, this research had been carried out

in order to know how Facebook addiction affects the students' behavior and

performance in studying and how the students will respond on the situation based

on the level of their knowledge and maturity.

Theoretical Framework

Facebook is a popular social media web site that has been hypothesized to

exert potential influence over users' attitudes, intentions, or behaviors. The

purpose of this study was to develop a conceptual framework to explain influential

aspects of Facebook (The Facebook Influence Model: A Concept Mapping

Approach).

There are a variety of studies that have been carried out to demonstrate

that there is a relationship between Facebook use and individual characteristics

ranging from agreeableness to esteem level (Lee, Moore, Park, &Park, 2012;

Winter et al., 2014). In addition, (Lee, Ahn, and Kim, 2014) stated that extroverts

use Facebook (status/photo share and using like button) more often than

introverts. According to (Grieve and Kemp, 2015), extraversion and openness are

related in the context of Facebook connectedness and (Marshall et al.,2015)

mentioned that there are more Facebook shares of social activities amongst
extroverts. Photo/video sharing and album uploads show significant differences

among different personalities (Eftekhar, Fullwood & Morris, 2014)

An example of theory that talks about the behavioral aspect is the Uses and

Gratification theory. Uses and gratification theory seeks to understand why people

seek out the media that they do and what they use it for. UGT differs from other

media effect theories in that it assumes that individuals have power over their

media usage, rather than positioning individuals as passive consumers of media.

UGT explores how individuals deliberately seek out media to fulfill certain needs

or goals such as entertainment, relaxation, or socializing. Today, UGT has more

relevance than ever as a tool for understanding how we as individuals connect with

the technologies around us. These technologies span everything from the Internet

to video gaming to mobile phones. UGT research into mobile phone usage has

found that people seek a number of gratifications from their phones, including

affection/sociability, entertainment, and mobility, among others. As another

example of a contemporary technology, when using social media, users can be

motivated by factors like a need to vent negative feelings, recognition, and

cognitive needs. Animated news and entertainment media are just two other

examples of media technologies that UGT researchers continue to explore.

Social learning theory (Bandura, 1997), explain that three factors such as

individual learners, peers, and situations, potentially affect individuals' learning

outcomes. For instance, social learning theory, which is also known as social

cognitive learning, affirms the significant of learning via observation and modelling.

To add on, this theory basically explains how the environmental and cognitive

components collaborate to affect an individual learning and behavior pattern.

Social learning theory views learning as a social process that individuals will self-

initiate, regulate learning and actively construct knowledge by acquiring,

generating, and structuring information (Yu et al., 2010). This theory emphasized

that individuals' cognition and behavior are influenced through observation and

interacting with peers and the situations (e.g., learning the environmental norms,

cultures, policies). This theory emphasize that it is individuals' interaction with the

environment that causes their behavioral consequences.

Statement of the problem

This study aimed to determine the effects of Facebook addiction to the

behavioral aspect and academic performance of Grade 10 students of Calumpang

National High School.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the socio-demographic profile of the students in terms of:

1.1 Gender

1.2 Social Life

2. What are the impacts of Facebook addiction on the behavior change of

youth in terms of:

2.1 Social Interaction

3.1 Gathering Information

3.2 Social capital

4. Is there a significant effect of Facebook to the behavioral aspect and

academic performance of Grade 10 students in Calumpang National
High School?

Research Hypothesis

There is no significant effect of Facebook addiction to the behavioral aspect

and academic performance of Grade 10 students of Calumpang National High

School.

Significance of the study

This study may benefit the following:

Parents

This will help the parents to know the effects of Facebook addiction on their

children’s behavior in studying. They can guide their children to limit the Facebook

usage.
Researcher

This study will help the researcher to gain knowledge and future studies

relating to the effects of Facebook addiction.

Students

To identify how the students’ virtual behavior affection reality and on how

these group of our future intellectuals manage their time. In this, the readers,

audience and an unconscious group of students will be enlightened on how they

can manage their time effectively.

Teachers

This study is also a great contributor to the mentors and teachers to fully

understand how their students spent their time in studying. By having the sample

study of the behaviors of students, teachers will also find out what are the pros and

cons of this modern medium and impart their selves to analyze their students’

thinking and at the same time, to incorporate teaching methods related to the

students’ interests.
Scope and Limitations of the study

This study is limited only to the effects of Facebook addiction to the

behavioral aspect and academic performance of Grade 10 students in Calumpang

National High School, S.Y 2018-2019.

The primary data of this study were on the status of Facebook and its effect

to the behavioral aspect and academic performance of students. It involves thirty-

five (35) Grade 10 students out of three hundred twenty-four (324) Grade 10

students in Calumpang National High School.

Definition of terms

The following terms that the researcher used in this study is in alphabetical

forms.
