Description of Pertinence

1. What does psychological health mean to you?

First, I wanted to see what his definition of psychological health was in order to gain a

better understanding of where he would be coming from in his next answers. According to

MentalHealth.gov (n.d.), “mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-

being.” Having him define psychological health instead of me defining it gives me a better

understanding of him.

2. What does spirituality mean to you?

CREATING WELLNESS---HEALING 3

The same here as above. I wanted to see what spirituality means to him, not anyone else,

his own personal definition. According to the University of Minnesota, spirituality “includes a

sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and it typically involves a search for

meaning.” (n.d).

3. How do you differentiate and connect the two? Would you group the two together or

keep them completely separate?

This too I feel gives me a better understanding of his innerworkings. If he considers the

two exclusive or working together for a better and healthier “him”.

4. Would you describe yourself as spiritual? Why or why not?

Now knowing his own personal definition, I wanted to see if he saw himself in that way.

This would give me a big clue to how important he feels his spirituality is or is not.

5. Define your current state of psychological and/or spiritual health.

I wanted to see where he saw himself.

6. What do you do to promote or developed your own spiritual and psychological health?

I wanted to see what he was already aware of, how he knew to work on it and if he was.

7. What would you like to do more of to promote your spiritual and psychological health?

This one is very important because it shows me if he has had thoughts of improvement or

if he feels he is ok where he is at spiritually and psychologically.

8. What are some things that you do to become present?

More than anything here I wanted to see if he practiced mindfulness and how he gets

there.

9. How well do you feel you handle stress?

CREATING WELLNESS---HEALING 4

This is a helpful tool to see how he feels he handles the stressors in his life. Most

compare themselves to others here. Medicinenet.com (n.d.) defines stress as “a physical, mental,

or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension.”

10. How do you de-stress?

I want to know what he already does so that I can give him some helpful tools to improve

if needed.

11. Who or what is your biggest outlet to ground yourself?

Knowing who and/or what someone uses to ground themselves says a lot about where

they really are spiritually and psychologically without them admitting it. It gives you a look into

what tools they use to help themselves.

12. Are you curious about anything particular as it relates to spirituality and

psychological health?

The answer to this question will show someone’s curiosities. Maybe they’ve pondered

meditation but haven’t quite gotten there yet.

Interview

1. What does phycological health mean to you?

“Being mentally able to handle your life.”

2. What does spirituality mean to you?

“Spirituality is your overall outlook on the way the world works.”

3. How do you differentiate and connect the two? Would you group the two together or

keep them completely separate?

“I would keep them separate. I just feel like they are two separate things.”

4. Would you describe yourself as spiritual? Why or why not?

CREATING WELLNESS---HEALING 5

“No. My brain doesn’t mentally work that way. I am not spiritual, I am cut and dry. It is

what it is. I'm not deep in thought.”

5. Define your current state of psychological and/or spiritual health.

(Big sigh) “My current state is… I'm not that in depth mentally. Its good. More active

than normal due to all of the new things going on. Overactive in a good way. (Meaning his mind

is overactive.)”

6. How do you overcome obstacles as related to your psychological and spiritual health?

“I completely freak out mentally until the outcome happens and then I continue to freak

out for a couple days and then it’s just over.” (Starts laughing.)

7. What do you do to promote or developed your own spiritual and psychological health?

“Manual labor. I think that manual labor whether it just be work or exercise, like pushing

limits, gives you that internal dialogue with yourself.”

8. What would you like to do more of to promote your spiritual and psychological health?

“More planning ahead would make everything easier. Really, manual labor. I don’t need

a vacation or anything like that. When I sit idle, that’s when it f*cks me up.”

9. How well do you feel you handle stress?

“Um, I feel like I handle normal stress very well. But things that don’t matter I tend to

stress about and not handle them as well.”

10. How do you de-stress?

“For me I just need a few minutes of nothing. I feel like I destress very quickly. I get

stressed very quickly but also destress very quickly.”

11. Who or what is your biggest outlet to ground yourself?

“Keep myself in check? I talk to my mom the most. I value her opinion.”

12. Are you curious about anything particular as it relates to spirituality and

psychological health?

“No, it’s all in my own head. I'm stubborn.”

Interviewee Development

Bartledoo seems to me to be somewhat close minded as well as closed off to the rest of the

world. He definitely had a hard time opening up and at times was very uncomfortable with the

general questions. There is nothing spiritual about Bartledoo whatsoever and even asking the

questions, he went back to his own mind and his own thoughts with no higher meaning or depth.

I mean this purely out of observation. He seems happy in his day to day life and so I wouldn’t

recommend a whole lot based on that. If Bartledoo does not want the outside influence of

spirituality, who am I to impose that upon him?

Addition/Subtractions to Inventory

For this particular person I would have added some questions to really dig deeper. I definitely

would have added “what is the meaning of life?” and or “what do you want out of this life?”.

Things that would have gotten past the surface to really get to know him on a spiritual level. I

will say this thought, he definitely knows what works for him so who am I to argue that?
