We are meeting on August 6, 2019 at 6 pm with concerned South
Austin residents, school representatives and business owners impacted
by the shelter Council proposed at 1112 Ben White Blvd and the
loosening homeless ordinances.
Since the unanimous Council vote on June 20, 2019 in favor of
purchasing the property at 1112 Ben White Blvd for future shelter use,
residents and business owners in the neighborhood have met
frequently to discuss our concerns about the proposal and our
frustration with the arms length at which we are being held by the City.
The unwillingness of the City to meet with us upon the shelter location
release date of Friday, June 14, 2019 and then voting on this location 4
business days later has yet to show us that the City is operating in good
faith and has continued to place a tremendous strain on the members of
this community.
best interests and abide by the intent of the 10-1 Council. We will not be
disenfranchised. We are a coalition of motivated community members,
mothers, fathers, teachers, police officers, lawyers, business
professionals etc. rapidly growing in strength whose voices will be
heard. We will not go away. Our mission statement is below.
S.A.F.E. Project MISSION STATEMENT:
We believe all citizens of Austin, including those
experiencing homelessness should be safe, whether it is
in the home, school, neighborhood, park, work, or in the
streets.
As taxpayers, voters and residents of Austin, we are frustrated by the
complete disregard shown for the intent of the 10-1 system. No one
within our group or outside of it has any illusions about the intent
behind adding the property purchase item to the council agenda 4
business days before voting on it. The City made no meaningful attempt
to discuss the proposal with community stakeholders, residents, school
representatives, or business owners impacted by the proposal. The
insinuation that the City did attempt to meaningfully hear the community
is a disappointment and unbecoming of the dignity of the seats held.
We are offering you an opportunity to save face to the extent possible
by meeting with community you brashly disregarded.
We have informed all media of meeting and your invite and are
expecting 200-300 concerned neighbors in attendance.
Thank you,
Cleo Petricek
