b) Write the time constant for a single tank system with linear resistance.
c) Write any two measuring variables.
d) Write the generalized transfer function of a second order system.
e) Write the expression for the ratio of output amplitude to input amplitude for sinusoidal
forcing function in a first order system.
f) Write any two criteria to determine the stability of a control system using Routh test.

2 a) Derive the transfer function for a first order system by considering the unsteady behaviour of
an ordinary mercury in glass thermometer. 10
b) Water flows into a tank (cylindrical) of 1.5m diameter at a rate of 1.3m3/min. The flow
characteristics are as follows.
Flow rate of m3/min 0 18.9 37.9 75.7 94.6 113.5
Level in m 0 0.21 0.34 1.19 1.92 2.68
Determine the level of the water in the tank at time t = 2 when the inflow is suddenly
decreased to 0.757m3/min  = time constant. 10
3 a) Derive the transfer function between P and the manometer level for an U tube manometer. 10
b) Define decay ratio, rise time over shoot, response time, natural frequency. Explain the
application of each one of them in control system. 10
4 a) A proportional controller is used to control temperature between the range 60°C – 100°C.
The controller is adjusted so that the output pressure varies from 3 psi to 15 psi as the
measured variable (temperature) goes from 71°C to 75°C. With the output kept constant, find
the gain and proportional band. 10
b) A unit step change in error is introduced in a PID controller with Kc = 10, i = 1, d = 0.5.
Plot the response of the controller against time. 10
5 a) Explain servo and regulatory mechanisms with suitable example. 8
b) A process has two major time constants and is controlled with a proportional controller. The
transfer functions are given by
1 1
G1  and G2 
2S  1 0.4S  1
Where G1 and G2 are connected in series and their time constants are in minutes. Find the
controller gain for a damping coefficient of 0.5. 12
