21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World

Performance Task on the Presentation of the Different Philippine Literary Periods


SY 2019-2020
1ST Quarter

Various dimensions of Philippine literary history from Pre-Colonial Literature, Literature from the
Spanish Period, Literature during the American Period, Literature during the Japanese and Post-War
Periods, Literature in the Late 20th Century

Background:

To understand our literature as it is now – and where it is headed – we must first trace its past. By
appreciating how Philippine literature has evolved throughout the centuries, we shall realize why we
have come to explore certain themes and to craft certain genres. We shall also gain a sense of national
pride as we uncover the richness of literature in the Motherland.

Task:

Identify the geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary history from Pre-Colonial
Period to the Late 20th Century and produce a creative representation by following the procedure of
ADIDS.

A-ACTIVITY (Motivation and Introduction) Start your presentation with an activity or motivation relating
to the topic or period that will be represented. You can come up with games or any other interactive
activities that will involve the whole class. Introduce your period in the most creative way possible. You
may show videos or any other audio and visual presentation that would further support your
introduction. Relate a few information to the most significant/ historic events that happened during
those times. (You may come up with a concept that will be followed all through out the presentation.)

D-DISCUSSION (Literary Period) Trace the literary development of Philippine literature from Pre-Colonial
to the Late 20th Century. Focus on the period assigned on your group. What are literary elements like
themes, genres and factors that are evident during those times? What are the following factors that
contributed most greatly to the proliferation of works in Philippine literature and why? (Literary Texts)
Choose a literary text that will be assigned to your group. Discuss the literary text from the biography of
the author, summary of the plot and analysis of literary techniques.

I-ISSUES/ INSIGHTS (21ST Century Issues) From the given 21st Century Issues namely; DIVERSTIY,
COLONIAL EXPERIENCE AND POST COLONIAL RESPONSE, HYBRIDITY, GLOBALIZATION, TECHNOLOGY,
GOVERNANCE, TERRORISM, ECOLOGICAL CRISIS, GLOBAL EPIDEMICS, INTERDISCIPLINARITY; Relate the
chosen/given text and discuss further as how it is relevant/ prevalent to the present times.

D-DEEPENING (Further Realizations) Give or gather further reflections and realizations from your group
and your classmates. What further insights can you get and what are some effective resolutions you can
extract from your classmates.
S-SYNTHESIS (Summary and Quiz) Sum up everything and give significant points to remember during
that period. Measure the learning through a short quiz. The quiz must be ranging from not lower than
10 items but not more than 25 items. The group conducting the quiz will get a perfect score.
