In construction industry, Installation of pipes and fittings takes 1% of the total

cost of the project. Piping systems are designed to supply water everywhere in

the building, for disposal of rain water above the ground, for sanitary purposes,

electrical layouts and communication line installation. On the other hand, a fitting

is used in pipe systems to connect the straight pipe or tubing sections, adapt to

different sizes or shapes for other purposes, such as regulating fluid flow.

Commonly companies classifies the pipes and fittings based on its color. Blue

represents the potable water line, orange for sanitary lines and electrical lines

while black or yellow green for telecommunication lines.

On the second day of our tour (February 27, 2019), we visited one of the

top distributor of pipes and fittings which is the Moldex Products Incorporated at

Marilao, Bulacan. For an overview of the company, Moldex Inc. was established

in 1967, a small operation that reprocessed plastic materials into pellets, and sold

`to downstream product manufacturers. The firm quickly graduated to producing

PVC film, a material used for the blister packing of various pharmaceutical

products , then later to polyethylene and polybutylene pipes and tubings. Then it

diversified into electrical and telecom conduits, as well as branded drain, waste

and vent pipes and fittings. Moldex became and still is today, the market leader

in the PVC pipes industry and is now a budding exporter of uPVC rigid film. In early

90s, the company ventured into real estate development, establishing Moldex

Reality Inc. It is an enterprise devoted to horizontal project expansion. One of its

flagship projects, under its real estate arm is the architectural masterpiece, 1322
Golden Empire Tower located along Roxas Boulevard in Manila. They are also the

manufacturer of Smart, Globe and PLDT telecommunication line. Within short

order, four more companies where established – Moldex Land Inc., Moldex Reality

Marketing Inc., Moldex Construction Inc., and Moldex Insurance Inc.,

The products of Moldex are Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes & fittings

(MOLDEX HDPE), Polythylene (PE) tubes and fittings (PE Fusion Pipes and Fittings),

Sanitary piping systems (Sanimold Extra, Sanimold Regular), Corrugated and rigid

electrical pipes and fittings (Moldcon, MoldFlex), PVC in-house water pipes and

fitting (Moldex Blue), PVC films and packaging materials (Clarex PVC FIlms),

Imported Hot and Cold Polypropylene (Wavin PPR Hot and Cold Water Piping

System). The main ingredient of their products is Polyvinyl. Polyvinyl Chloride is used

in a variety of applications in the building and construction, health care,

electronics, automobile and other sectors, in products ranging from piping and

siding, blood bags and tubing, to wire and cable installation and more.

In our stay there, the lecturer made a twist in discussing their company’s

profile and products by turning it into a game, inspired from Who Wants to be A

Millionare. The player of the game is selected through elimination which is similar

to Showtime’s Beklavan. During the tour plant, we are equipped with the

appropriate PPE’s and phones were not allowed. There are two machines used

in creating pipes fittings; the manual and automatic. In the manual production

line, the secret ingredient is pumped into the machine then after few minutes, the
operator should manually pull out the finished product from the machine. On the

other hand, the automatic machine production produces numbers of products

per one cycle, the operator just removes the excess then put it in the sack. The

time of production depends on the size of the fitting. In pipe production the raw

material is molded inside the machine. A faucet producing cold water can be

seem outside the machine to harden the product since it is plastic and the

product is molded through heat. After its cooldown, the printer then is seen few

inches from the faucet to label the product. The last one at the production line is

the cutter which is automated according to the product’s length.

Feed by the company’s profile, products, and the process of

manufacturing their products, we can say that “Basta Tubo, I Moldex Mo” .
