A CALL TO CELEBRATION
Over the past several years, we have seen a continued growth in
Youth Ministry in the parishes throughout our di,oceses. Part of
helping that growth is the opportunity to gather thlese young peo­
. ple from these parishes and schools to celebrate the vitality and
life they experience on the local level and the need to see that they
are part of a larger Church and family.
The enthusiasm of 7500 young people comiog together in
prayer, worship, reflection, and community is a sign of their in­
volvement and influence in the family of the Church. They are the
young Church of today and have a real part in the: theme of our
Congress: FAMILY- TOGETHER IN HIS LOVB.
Over the years, we hav.e asked for evaluations of this day and
have taken seriously those recommendations. This year you will
see a change in our schedule and an excellent selection of speakers
to help make the day more responsive to the needs of our youth.
We hope and pray together that this day will be a celebration, a
support to you, and a continuing encouragement for the youth of

training course. In theit 1976 document on Cateehist and master
catechist formation, the California Bishops put a 3-year expira­
tion date on catechist and master catechist certification. This
design built in a process to e.,ncourage the catec:hist to keep enriching
himself or herself on an ongoing basis.
To renew theircertifieates after t'hree years, catechlsts need
30 hours and master catechists 36 hours of continuing education.
The Religious Education C.ongress prov, ides an excellent oppor­
turiiW to work towards re-certification. On the workshop pages� 1
·· have indicated which apply to re-certif.icatJon whether on the
c.atechjst or master catechist level, based on whether the scope of
the workshop covers the subject area indicated in the Bishops'
decument.
1 might mention that there are many excellent workshops not
marked for re-certification. Do not confi1,1e your selection of
workshops to just those needed for re-certifkation. Same of these
others may be just what you need or want fl,t the time.
Whatever the scope, l think you will find the workshops of
Coi:igress 1980 both exciting and intellectually rewarding. l hope
y:our expectations a,nd mine will be fulfilled this March as we
celebrate the year of the family together in his name.

throughout the west in parishes
and universities giving concerts

"TOOLS OF PRAYER"
(2H) The seven young Domini­
cans will use banjo, bass,
drums, guitar,, musical saw,
mandolin, auto harp, grease­
paint, costumes, and projectors
as tools of prayer; prayer in­
volving the whole person-all
the senses: sight, sound; move­
ment. Participants will share in
an experience of the family
together in God's love through
Gospel Bluegrass, contemporary
Christian music, inime and media.

nowned figure in the musical
experience of the Black com­
munity. The adult choir at
Transfiguration parish in South
Central Los Angeles, where Mr.
Pratt is Choir Director, has
recorded an album, King Jesus
Is A ' Listenin, ' with him con­
ducting. Participants will find_
his workshop especially inspira-
tional.
"MUSIC OF THE BLACK
EXPERIENCE IN LITURGY"
(4P) The price has been paid.
The dues have been paid. The
time has long passed that music
of the Black experience should
take its proper role in liturgical
expression. Out of the pain of
slavery and later rejection, a
people takes to its heart the pain
and rejection shown the Son of
Man; They expressed that rela­
tionship in a music that only
pain, suffering and rejection
could inspire. It is a legacy of
pride. A legacy that needs to be
shared.·
