Harvard-Littleton-Boxborough
area during a recent one-day
“BioBlitz.”

Conservation Trust, Littleton
Conservation Trust, Town of
Littleton, Town of Harvard,
and Boxborough Conservation

Trust, along with 30 volunteers,
scoured local conservation
lands in search of as many wild-
life species as they could find.
The goal of this BioBlitz was to
gain a fuller understanding of
the wildlife that live in the area.
The most exciting discov-
ery was a ground spider that
is believed to be a Sergiolus
tennesseensis. This black-and-
white striped spider had not
previously been reported in
the northeastern region of the
United States.
The volunteers also observed
several species of concern
in Massachusetts including
Blanding’s turtle, banded sun-

fish, scarlet tanager, American
chestnut, and white ash. The
painted turtle was the most fre-
quently reported animal, and
the pink lady’s-slipper and par-
tridge berry were the most fre-
quently reported plants.
Prior to the BioBlitz, the
six project partners had held
three “Discovery Days,” where
amateur naturalists learned the
skills needed for the BioBlitz.
Altogether, more than 425 spe-
cies were observed during the
BioBlitz and Discovery Days
combined.
During the past month,
SVT has been uploading the
findings—and several photo-
graphs—to the iNaturalist app.
This online tool makes it pos-
sible for citizen scientists to
share their discoveries with
other naturalists, and it provides
data to researchers who study
wildlife patterns. Additionally,
the online community works
together to correctly ID “mys-
tery species,” and this col-
laboration has added friendly
debate and conversation to the
BioBlitz project.
By cataloging the plant and
animal species in the region,
the four conservation groups
and the two towns can make
plans for improving the health
of local lands. For example,
BioBlitz participants recorded
the location of several invasive
plant species, such as Japanese
honeysuckle and Hemlock
woolly adelgid. The land man-
agers can use the information to
develop strategies for control-
ling the plants before they cause
irreparable harm to our native
wildlife habitats.

Makes 4 servings
1 can (15 ounces) chick-
