Introduce the topic by retelling the story below.


Introductory
Activity A story is told of a traveler who came upon an old man beating his donkey
in an effort to make the animal rise. The animal sat placidly in the middle of the
road refusing to get up, and the old man continued to whip the animal until a
stranger stepped up and stopped his hand. “Why don’t you tell the donkey to rise?”
asked the stranger. “I will,” reply the old man, “but first I have to get his attention.

Say: The same is true in our classroom. What children learn depends not only
on what they are taught but also on how they are taught, their developmental level,
and their interests and experiences... These beliefs require that much closer
attention be paid to the learning strategies/activities chosen to carry out the
instructional objectives of the lesson.

After 20 minutes, divide the participants into groups by subject areas

Proceed to the following steps for the group activity:

 Instruct each group to assign a moderator to lead the discussion and a


recorder to take down each of the members responses
 Each member of the group take turns in sharing 10 frequently used
strategy
 After all the members responses have been gathered, have the group
recorder tally them.
 The moderator of each group will give a summary of his/her group’s
responses
 Time limit for the group’s sharing is 20 minutes

After 20 minutes, call on the moderators to give a summary of his/her group’s


responses

At the end of the reports draw a profile of the participants use of instructional
strategy

Your profile may be something like this:


“Two-thirds of the participants use direct instruction”

Analysis 1 Process the Activity by focusing on the 3 questions below:

 What are your reasons in using a particular instructional strategy?
 What are the most important considerations when choosing a particular
instructional strategy or method?
 In what ways can each of the instructional strategies support the
development of life-long learners?

Proceed to the following steps for the group activity:

 Divide into dyads/triads by year level of assignment

 After 30 minutes, convene as group and share your outputs
 The members assess the shared output using the activity form below:

 After the assessment of outputs the group revise the outputs incorporating
the suggestions discussed and select 1 output to be presented to the whole
group

After 30 minutes, call on each group to present their outputs

Encourage interactions regarding the congruency of selected teaching


strategies and techniques with the lessons objectives

Allow another 15 minutes for the revision of outputs

Closing End the session by reading “Lesson from a Turtle”
