A rising quality of life and high rates of resource consumption patterns have had a

unintended and negative impact on the urban environment which is the generation of

wastes far beyond the handling capacities of urban governments and agencies. Cities and

barangays are now grappling with the problems of high volumes of waste, the costs

involved, the disposal technologies and methodologies, and the impact of wastes on the

local and global environment.

But these problems have also provided a window of opportunity for different

barangays to find solutions which are involving the community and the private sector,

involving innovative technologies and disposal methods, and involving behavior changes

and awareness raising. These issues have been demonstrated by good practices from

many cities around the world.

We were tasked to interview 10 respondents from Barangay Biga in Tanza, Cavite.

We noticed that they have different answers especially when they were asked about the

time of the collection of garbage in their areas in the said barangay. The interviewees

also have different reactions regarding the waste management disposal happening in

Biga. Some of them were amused, angry, and sad because of the lack of formality and

implementation of programs. We have also noticed from their answers that most of them

do not do recycling of garbage which is very important to lessen waste materials. They

just store their wastes at home or keep them in a garbage bag waiting for the garbage

collectors. Only a few of them knows about the rules and regulation about waste disposal

that’s why they are not unified on making the environment clean. We noticed that they

have different answers because they are still separated with subdivisions in the barangay.

We therefore conclude that Barangay Biga needs more improvements regarding

their waste management disposal. The barangay officials must be the role model in

proper disposal of wastes and there must be innovative programs to make a change and

for the betterment of their environment. They must be the role model so that the people

would see that they are dedicated and serious about their jobs and implementations in

their barangay. They must also let all the people in the barangay know about the rules

and regulations on waste disposal so that the people will have unity in making their

barangay clean. Because of proper implementation of programs and having cooperative

people, other barangays would also be influenced to do better. Everyone must help each

other achieve the desired improvements so that cleanliness and neatness of the

environment can be maintained.
