The 290 words below, are used most often when we write. Together they make up about 75% of most writing, so they are very important. These words
have been arranged in alphabetical order and put in lists according to how often they are used. Because these words are used so often, it is very
important that all pupils learn to spell each one.

Assessment Week Spelling Tests


With the exception of ‘Essentials 1’ test are made up of random sample words from the word list above. These
are tests are designed to be given during assessment meant to allow students to quickly demonstrate mastery of
a particular spelling level.
Students demonstrating mastery (95% or higher) at a particular level should be moved on to the subsequent test.
Notes below each test should allow teachers to determine if students are below, meeting or exceeding spelling
level expectations at HFS.
