Dear UWRT1104,

After taking UWRT 1104 with Mrs. Raymond, I have grown so much as a
writer. I have had all of my writing prompts peer reviewed by my mentor Jake.
During the first few peer revisions I made so many grammatical errors. Over
the course of the few weeks of utop, I began to see less and less errors
needed to be fixed.

Having AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature

Composition, caused me to believe my writing skills would be the best. However
not everyone is perfect and of course I had things I could always improve on.

I never knew the height of my writing capabilities until now. I learned

so much about my family through the genealogy project I had to complete. With
the help of Mrs. Raymond and the resources at the University of North Carolina
at Charlotte (UNCC), I was able to uncover so much information about my family
and my inquiry question. My inquiry question was “How many African American
grandparents are the primary caregivers for their grandchildren?” The library
was the most helpful resource to help me answer this question. The information
I have learned on my question I led me to want to do more research on my own.

I spread all of my research out so that I would not procrastinate and

stress. Doing this actually caused me to enjoy working on the project, because
I had time to look into certain topics and information. It took me awhile to
come up with an inquiry question, but when I did it was brought me such an
indescribable feeling.

I liked how the artifact presentation I did in this class correlated

with the semester genealogy project. I was able to use my artifact in my
project to help further my inquiry question.

Over the course of the utop program in UWRT, I have learned that writing
takes a lot of my time. It also takes more than one day or hour to perfect. I
have also found out that when the topic interests me, I love to research and
to answer the unanswered questions.

My best work over this semester would have to be the writing prompt on a
colorful relative. I did it on my mother, and I put a lot of hard work and
research into it. I did countless interviews with her to help further my
knowledge on her side of the family. The project I enjoyed the most and what I
consider to be my best trip would have to be the artifact presentation. I got
to learn about the great grandmother I never heard about before. I also
learned more about the woman who played a huge role in shaping my mother into
the woman she is today.

Sincerely,

Gabrielle Haley
