BRIEF HISTORY

In 1945, a small drugstore opened in war-torn downtown Manila after a fortuitous event
between its founders. This drugstore was to be the forerunner of Unilab. As small as it was, the
drugstore had a mission: to provide quality medicines at prices within reach of as many people as
possible in the community. In the minds of the founders, it would have been unreasonable and
coarse to sell medicines at prices determined by pure business alone to sick people whose
livelihood had been lost in the war. The founders and successors believe that the mission is as
valid and true as when first it was given expression. A few years after it started, the drugstore
had

a pharmaceutical company, with a simple manufacturing setup and a modest marketing force to
promote and sell high quality and affordable medicines. Through the years, Unilab has been able
to solidify its position of leadership not only in the Philippines but in southeast Asia as well.
Unilab is the leading pharmaceutical company in the Philippines, a position it has
consistently maintained over six decades. Its portfolio includes some of the biggest prescription
and over-the-counter brands in the country. The President and Chief Executive Officer of Unilab
is Clinton Campos Hess. He leads the company with its corporate philosophy that places the
people at the center of everything-Bayanihan.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY OF UNILAB INC.

Unilab is making a difference to the society due to its commitment to a more meaningful
and holistic corporate social responsibility. It makes an effort to achieve balance between the
profits and its service to the people, which is its social responsibility to improve the health of many
people as possible.

Affordable Medicines
In 2000, it launched the Afford-a-Med. This is a price-
reduction program that lowered the prices of common drugs by 10-14
percent. It was able to cover about 65 essential drugs commonly
prescribed by doctors. In 2002, it launched a new division, RiteMed,
which aims to deliver “right medicine, priced right.” RiteMed
manufactures and markets off-patent pharmaceuticals that are priced
20-80 precent lower than the branded ones. In this way, patients
especially the poor who have very low income could buy their
medicine at an affordable price. Such huge price differences could really help to reach all patients
in the Philippines. This will save million of Filipinos lives and reduce the use of less-effective
medicine in the public which disease/illness is becoming increasingly resistant.

PRODUCTS OR SERVICES PROVIDED BY UNILAB INC.

Unilab has continuosly provided Filipinos with trusted and quality healthcare products and
services for more than 70 years.

UNILAB Foundation offers the following programs:

HEALTH SCIENCE ON THE GO

Developed in partnership with Philippine
Foundation for Science and Technology, Health
Science on the Go (HSOTG) stimulates curiosity
and provides students a meaningful and fun
encounter with the health sciences. Thirty-one
engaging and interactive exhibits for general
science and five health clusters (physical fitness,
nutrition, hygiene, public health and medicine) complement K-12 competencies in Health and
Science.

By promoting wellness and demonstrating how personal choices affect one’s health,
HSOTG contributes to a generation that is more prepared to live healthier lifestyles. Financial
sponsorship, communication campaigns and volunteer work are various ways to support HSOTG
in providing interactive health learning, and inspiring young advocates for a healthier Philippines
– one student at a time.

Ideas Positive is the country's premier

youth engagement program for innovative
solutions to health issues in communities.

With their energy, creativity,

innovativeness, grounded idealism and sense of social purpose, the youth possess immense
potential to positively impact the health status of communities. Ideas Positive helps make this
happen by providing them with the knowledge, skills and necessary resources.

 Ideas Positive partners with the youth to find innovative solutions to community
health issues

Since 2012, Ideas Positive has been holding annual nationwide competitions for
innovations that address health problems in communities. Equipped with project management

LEADERSHIP JOURNEY
 The cornerstone of a healthier
Philippines is a progressive healthcare sector

This begins with empowered healthcare

professionals in both the public and private
sectors. But their doctors are often thrust into
leadership positions with little or no preparation
to fulfill such roles effectively.

 Leadership Journey (LJ) develops doctors as leaders, stimulating purposeful action

Effective leadership requires self-awareness, strong values and clear vision. LJ is

uniquely designed to bring out deep and meaningful reflection by taking doctors away from their
routines, into an adventure and inventure. Through the Journey, doctors rediscover their purpose
and define the legacy they want to leave, emerging with renewed passion and commitment to
their chosen advocacies. After the Journey, they also develop and implement health projects,
individually and collectively, drawing on newly forged networks and shared passions.

 LJ creates a trusted community of healthcare professionals, committed to building a

healthier Philippines

LJ participants and alumni represent a wide breadth of regions, specializations and

sectors, including public health, government and medical education. They continue to develop
professionally and personally, serving as leaders and champions of holistic health – for a
healthier Philippines.

 210 empowered healthcare professionals - and counting

 18 Regions
 31 Specializations
 161 Institutions
 Over 10 community projects initiated nationwide

PLAY IT FORWARD
Play It Forward (PIF) is a science- and
evidence-based intervention that combines play
spaces and curriculums to create access to play
and its therapeutic and developmental benefits.
Created with experts in design and child
psychology, it aids in the recovery of children
experiencing trauma or undergoing medical
treatment.

They partner with experts in psychology and design; volunteer facilitators; organizations
with similar causes; and parents of the children – critical components for the success of their
program. Donors unique contribution can add to theirs, ensuring a steady flow of volunteers and
resources.

So far, UNILAB Foundation have developed modules and established pilot play spaces in
Cagayan de Oro for survivors of typhoon Sendong, and six hospitals in Metro Manila for
pediatric patients. PIF-On the Move is a mobile version that can be quickly deployed to post-
disaster areas.

Play It Forward includes subprograms, namely, Play It Forward-Hospitals, Play It

Forward-On the Move, Play It Forward-Peace, and Play It Forward-Post Disaster.
 Play It Forward-Hospitals

Play It Forward-Hospitals (PIF-H)

utilizes the same formula of play space
plus curriculum, this time as an aid to
treatment and to facilitate recovery. The
play spaces are uniquely designed to
address the specific needs of children
depending on their medical condition,
while baseline of the curriculum’s target outcomes are measured at the start of the intervention.
The synergy of play space and curriculum aims to give children a richer hospital experience,
leading to faster healing and fuller recovery.

The Fe del Mundo Medical Center (FdMMC), which began as the Children’s Memorial
in 1957 from its nucleus, the ‘Little Clinic,’ is a tertiary care hospital offering comprehensive
pediatric care. With more than 200 pediatric patients coming in every day, FdMMC made an
excellent pilot site for PIF-H.

 Play It Forward-On the Move

Like the original program, PIF-

OTM has two complementing components
for optimal results: the mobile play space
and the play curriculum.

The mobile play space is

thoughtfully designed to function both as
a bag and a chair to serve different needs.
As a chair, it allows the child to reclaim his sacred space to play. It provides a sense of security
and ownership, especially in evacuation centers and tent cities where children are displaced. As a
bag, it allows the child to bring his own play space anywhere he or she goes. It makes use of fun,
vibrant colors, like a rainbow, a glimpse of a silver lining behind a dark cloud.
The mobile play space contains developmentally appropriate materials such as Filipino
toys (e.g., sipa, sepak takraw), supplies for art activities (e.g., puppet making, cape designing),
and activity books. It also contains a storybook, a component essential to the curriculum of PIF-
OTM. The book, titled “Ufie: Ang Asong Bayani”, follows a dog’s journey as he goes through
several disasters such as typhoons, an earthquake and fire, but manages to survive and emerge as
a hero. It aims to help children relate with the character, get in touch with their own emotions
and make positive their experience of the disaster.

 Play It Forward-Peace

Play It Forward-Peace aims to build resilience among

children, while integrating peace education. More than helping
the children recover from the trauma they experienced due to
human conflict, we hope to shape them to become peace
champions in their communities.

 Play It Forward-Post Disaster

In December 2011, 87,500

children were left homeless and orphaned
after Typhoon Sendong slammed into
Northern Mindanao. A year after
Sendong, children have received relief
goods and gone back to school, but many
still grieve for the parent, sibling, or friend
that they lost.

A relocation site for Sendong survivors in Barangay Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro City was
thus chosen as the location of the pilot Play It Forward Play Space. In the spirit of bayanihan,
Unilab Foundation partnered with private and public partners to build the 1,200 sqm play space.
It was designed by renowned Architect Angelo Ma?osa, pro bono, while Ateneo de Manila
University’s Fr. Jaime Bulatao Center for Psychology Services developed the curriculum for the
intervention, and the UP College of Human Kinetics served as advisor for usage and safety. The
site is managed by Gawad Kalinga and the community.

The pilot site was completed in 2013 and benefited 1,000 children survivors of Sendong.
Effects of the intervention were assessed and yielded positive results. Outcomes of the five-
module therapeutic play curriculum include: 1) statistically significant increase in self-esteem,

2) improved self-perceptions, 3) adopted coping strategies, and 4) improved emotional

expression and general disposition.

The following are some of Play It Forward’s upcoming projects:

 Donate to Play It Forward-Resilience

This March, Unilab Foundation will bring Play It Forward-

Resilience to children affected by the Mayon situation. They will be
training 35 facilitators, who will conduct a two-day play day for 200
children and 50 parents in Malilipot, Albay.

 Help bring #PlayItForward to pediatric patients

of South Cotabato!

The doctors and nurses of Lariosa Clinic and

Hospital (LCH) believe in the power of therapeutic play
to help children in their care. LCH is committed to
provide quality and affordable health care services to the
people of Surallah, South Cotabato and its neighboring
towns.

A champion of various health advocacies in

Mindanao, LCH seeks to put up a Play It Forward play space in their hospital to provide a safe
and happy place for their young patients. This is to ensure that children will have a change in
mindset that the hospital is not a scary or threatening place. LCH aims to engage both the
children and their parents to practice, participate, and promote health in their communities.

PROJECT INCLUSION
Person with Disability (PWDs) are an
untapped resource for businesses and
communities – they just need the right conditions.
Harnessing their exceptionalities in the workplace
is good for the business, good for their
organization, and good for the PWDs themselves.

Beginning with those neurodevelopmental

disabilities, Project Inclusion enables the employment of PWDs in a way no one else has done
before. UNILAB Foundation document and publish success cases; create tools to equip willing
employers and match potential employees to appropriate positions; and collaborate with medical
experts, educational institutions, government units, national and international organizations and
the private sector.

To have a meaningful impact on a large scale, workplace inclusion needs to be the effort
of different stakeholders in society. Employers can dare to hire PWIDs; parents can share their
children’s giftedness to the world; government officials can help enact laws; schools can better
prepare their students for work; and anyone can get involved, starting with bringing the issue into
mainstream conversation.

Currently, there are 3 pioneering research studies on PWD employment, 21 partner

employers with inclusive workplaces, and around 50 partner organizations who champion
workplace inclusion.
 Project Inclusion videos call on companies to embrace Persons with Disability
[Rappler, May 31, 2017]

In the Project Inclusion video

series, viewers are invited to consider the
question: Would you dare to hire a Person
with Disability?

Titled "#daretohire", the video

series is both a challenge and an invitation
to companies: to embrace Persons with
Disability (PWDs) in their work pool, and to experience the rewards of hiring persons with
unique capabilities.

Through this series, Project Inclusion aims to increase awareness about the benefits of
hiring PWDs. Project Inclusion is a program that advocates for workplace inclusion, and enables
gainful employment of PWDs in the Philippines.

LINGAP DIWA ADVOCACY PROGRAM

True to Unilab’s vision of being compassionate people and enabling people in need,
Medichem, the mental health division of Unilab, is committed to strengthen community mental
health through education of families regarding the different mental health illnesses and disorders.
It aims to reduce stigma, prejudice and
discrimination to patients with mental disorders and
empower the community to be a source of compassion
and care in transforming the community and the
individuals as advocates that will support central nervous
system patients and their families.

 City’s elderly citizens undergo free neuro consultation [Balon Dagupan News,
May 22, 2016]
The city and the United Laboratories (Unilab) launched on May 20 its “Lingap Diwa”
project for the elderly citizens here which gives out free screening and doctor’s consultation for
those suffering stress and anxiety, dementia, pain, depression among others under the theme
“Malusog na Isip, Utak at Katawan, Masayang Buhay at Kinabukasan”

Jake Buniao, project coordinator of “Lingap Diwa” in North and Central Luzon of
Unilab, disclosed that “Lingap Diwa” is no different from other medical missions but unlike any
regular medical mission, this only caters to specific number of patient population focusing on
patients suffering from Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders.

More than 200 elderly citizens from the different barangays responded to the medical
mission held at the CSI Stadia under the guidance of the Barangay Senior Citizens Associations
(BASCA) Dagupan City Chapter headed by lawyer Cornelia Español and the Federation of
Senior Citizens Association-Dagupan Chapter headed by Luz Geminiano.

UNILAB HOSPITAL RELATIONSHIPS

United Laboratories, the country’s biggest pharmaceutical company, is on a hospital-

buying binge. It buys hospitals for the main reason of creating a market for its products. As of
2015, Unilab have just bought Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City, the VR Potenciano
Medical Center in Mandaluyong and the Medical Center Manila on UN Avenue in Manila. All
three hospitals were owned and managed by doctors and their families.

1. CAPITOL MEDICAL CENTER

Capitol Medical Center Inc. is a Multi

Speciality clinic in Paligsahan, Quezon City. It
was founded by Thelma Clemente, Luis
Clemente and fellow medical professionals. It
opened to the public on June 22, 1970. CMC
has been bought by UNILAB before the death
of CMC founder Thelma Clemente last 2016.

2. VRP MEDICAL CENTER

First established as "Polymedic General

Hospital" by Dr. Victor R. Potenciano along
with Col. Pelagio G. Potenciano, M.D. Arsenio
G. Francisco, M.D., Mrs. Irma P.E.
Potenciano, and Flora P. Caviles in Sept. 22,
1967. The name was changed to current “VRP
Medical Center”in Feb 28, 1998 to prevent confusion from other “Polymedia” entitles in the
country. Had been bought by Unilab latest 2015.

3. MANILA MEDICAL CENTER

Manila medical center was established by University Physicians’ Services, Inc., (UPSI)
supported financially by a non-medical group headed by Mrs. Soledad Lirio Dolor on July 29,
1967. It was formally inaugurated on August 15, 1967 located in Epifano de los Santos Ave.
Mandaluyong Manila City. Since March 2013, the hospital is operated and managed by Mount
Grace Hospitals Inc., who also rebranded it as ManilaMed and UNILAB bought control in
Manila Medical Center in the latest 2015.

INTERVENTION

Play It Forward (PIF) is the therapeutic play intervention of Unilab Foundation.

Unilab Foundation launched PIF in 2012 after Typhoon Sendong, to help children in
post-disaster areas recover from trauma. It is a child-focused, community-based resiliency
program that empowers local communities to provide their children with the necessary emotional
and psychosocial support.

The first PIF play space in Brgy. Canitoan in Cagayan de Oro City was fully turned over
to the community in 2016.

Play It Forward-On The Move (PIF-OTM) was

created as a mobile play kit for faster deployment to
communities in need. Designed as a bag with a waterproof
hood and cape, the kit contains traditional Filipino games
and art materials, as well as activity books.

Play It Forward-Hospitals (PIF-H) utilizes the

same formula of play space plus curriculum, this time as
an aid to treatment and to facilitate recovery.
1. Fe del Mundo Medical Centerwas established by
Dr. Fe del Mundo, the Grand Dame of Pediatrics in
the Philippines, FDMMC is the first pediatric
hospital in the country and where the first Play It
Forward play space is built. The design of this
playspace is original cartoon characters used to
familiarize the children with different medical
equipment and procedures.

2. Far Eastern University-Dr. Nicanor Reyes

Medical Foundation is one of the pioneer
medical schools in the Philippines. The Play It
Forward play space in FEU-NRMF is designed
to match the theme of the existing mural of the
hospital, which shows grassy fields, trees,
animals and cartoon characters.

3. Lung Center of the Philippines (LCP) is the premier institution for lung and chest diseases in
the country.

The backyard-themed play space in itself

is therapeutic. It was designed specifically to
provide an outdoor look and feel- something
that sick kids often miss out because of their
condition.

4. National Kidney and Transplant Institutethe

goal of (NKTI) is to provide world class health
care to all patients and their families. The play
space in NKTI was designed with the main
concept of “bringing the outside in” design with trees, fences and park benches.

5. Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City aims

to be the leader in upholding the highest
standards of cardiovascular care in the country.
The Play It Forward play space at the Philippine
Heart Center is designed to be a typical Metro
Manila street setting, and all the elements are
painted in bright, solid colors to give off that
energetic vibe that could help kids regain their
strength and control.

6. Rizal Medical Center (RMC), formerly The

Rizal Provincial Hospital, now located in Pasig
City. The play space is inspired by perya or the
Filipino version of local amusement park. The
space is fun and exciting to improve the
children’s hospital experience during
confinement.
