Newsletter Staff Corner:
Your newsletter staff has been hard at work trying to keep the membership informed of events, activities, issues, and anything
that members need to know. Without the members’ input this job is becoming more and more difficult. Please feel free to
submit weddings, births, anniversaries, questions, opinions, news items, and suggestions on how to improve your monthly
newsletter, as well as any ideas you might have. In the past issues I have requested short blurbs about member vacations, travel,
family reunions, and experiences to share with your fellow readers. As of now only one has been submitted and we would like
to have more participation from our readers. We can’t continue to provide an interesting and informative monthly newsletter
without some help, so give it a try. Send something to lebanonclub@att.net (email) or to LAC Newsletter, 22 West Street,
Danbury, CT 06810 (postal mail).
Any member who would like to place a business ad in our newsletter please let us know, currently we have a few available
spaces opened. The cost for an ad is $125 per year, that’s 12 issues of the club’s newsletter. We are limited in the number of
pages our newsletter can have due to printing costs; therefore, we can accommodate only 24 ads per edition. If you are
interested in an ad for the 2020 calendar year, please contact Ghassan Najm or Lou Najamy at lebanonclub@att.net or see us at
one of our bi-weekly meetings (dates of meetings are listed on the back-page calendar of this edition).
Thoughts to Live By:
“Life is not a matter of milestones, but of moments.” Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy (1890-1995).
“To know how to say what others only know how to think is what makes men poets or sages; and to dare to say what others
think makes men martyrs or reformers- or both.” Elizabeth Charles, British writer (1828-1896).
A Little Humor:
“A dollar saved is a quarter earned.” Oscar Levant, American composer, musician, actor. (1906-1972).
“If youth only had a chance or old age any brains.” Stephen Leacock, Canadian humorist-educator (1869-1944).
Member News:
Membership: Any family member, friend, co-worker, or acquaintance who you think would be a good addition to our club
bring him down to an event or function and see if he is interested in becoming a member. If so, contact membership chairman
Lou Najamy lnaj47@yahoo.com or at home phone 203-792-3559 for information and /or questions. Membership applications
are available at the club in a folder on the telephone shelf in the bar room.
Health and Welfare:
Please keep in your prayers our ill members and/or their family members and wishing them speedy recovery specially Elie
Karam and Ernie Bourjaili. Please notify Pres. Mike Caravakis, whenever a member falls seriously ill by sending an email to
caravakis@aol.com.
Membership Meetings:
They are held every other Tuesday on a regular schedule. Reminders are sent via email and you can find the
schedule in the monthly calendar on the back of this newsletter. These are great opportunities to learn of the club
house maintenance activities, financials, planned events as well as community events to name a few. In addition,
you could provide input or suggestions on any number of items for board consideration. For example, in a recent
meeting which was the most attended in a while, it was suggested to consider Solar Energy to save on high energy
cost in addition to other house items. We always have dinner thereafter for only $10/person thanks to Chef Lou
Scalzo. We also have fun such as by celebrating Birthdays, recently it was John Ashkar’s 80th and Dick Jowdy 85th
or playing a friendly card game. For some of you who have not seen the club house lately after the exterior painting
and replacement of front awning with the Club LOGO placed on it, here is a front view from July 4th. Hope to see
more of you at the club soon!

Ladies Auxiliary News by President Betty Najm
The month of July has given us too many hot & humid days! Please stay safe and cool this August! Our next meeting will be

delicious hot and cold appetizers featuring the Lebanese “mezza” and a sampling of Lebanese spirits! Vivo Bar &
Grill is serving dinner from 5 to 11 PM.
This new fundraiser will allow the Ladies to raise more funds to help with some of our new charity events, like the
St. Jude Run/Walk and other community programs. Please call Mary Elisabeth at 203-417-4997 to make your
reservations now! We need a count to prepare a wonderful spread!

The Ladies and Men of Lebanon-American club have joined forces again in the 2019 fundraising efforts for the
St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer happening on September 21 in Stamford, CT. September is also
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer or other life-threatening
diseases and has pushed the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% when it first opened its doors to over 80%
today. Lisa Antous-Binette has signed up once again to be the Team Captain for this great event! I’m inviting you to
be a part of this great cause! The Ladies Auxiliary has voted, and it will match donations made by its members up to
$250. Please check with your employer to see if they MATCH your donation.
Every single gift matter and makes a difference in saving a child’s life. This is something that’s dear to the
club’s heart, and we would be so grateful for any donation that you see fit to make towards our team
campaign. Please go to the website:
https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR/Walk/Walk?team_id=239342&pg=team&fr_id=109369

By Ghassan Najm:
Every year several National Middle Eastern Religious or Social Club
Conventions are held in the US in different cities. These tend to bring
people together that otherwise would never have a chance to meet,
possibly meeting relatives that you have never known, or get to reunite
with friends or relatives who have moved. It also provides each
generation the opportunity to make lifetime friendships. In the past
several years, our family has planned some of our vacations around the
Maronite NAM (National Apostolate of Maronites) Convention. In
general, the locations of the next 3 annual conventions are known.
This year in late June we attended the convention in Miami which was
hosted by Our Lady of Lebanon Church at Coral Gables, Miami FL.
Every day was well planned with activities, presentations, excursions,
formal dinners and entertainment with local and famous Lebanese
performers such as Ghassan Saliba. Dancing and Sing Along Karaoke
into the early morning hours has been a tradition and is expected every
night. It is truly fun for all ages! This year’s attendance reached 1300, a
record for the Saturday Night Banquet. We met up with the Nejame,
Salame, Putnam, and Nassif families from the Danbury area. The next
three conventions will be held in Cincinnati, Philadelphia & Minneapolis.
Coincidently, and just 45 mins away, the American Druze Society
(ADS) held its National Convention in Fort Lauderdale during the same
week. Some of the conventioneers were able to stop by at each of the
respective conventions to meet with friends. The Saturday night
banquet featured honoring one of our area greats in the community,
Sheikh Walid Farhat (Seen on the right) as Man of the Year. The LAC
Officers and Board of Directors expressed its congratulations on behalf
of the membership in an ad taken in the Convention Program Book.
