JOYS OF ELECTRONICS
(OMG: Oh My Gadget)
SPLASH

Summer 2019
Digital Instrumentation and Circuits Labs
Times: Mon, Wed, Friday 12:30 – 2:00

Instructor: 4 EE Student Instructors

Supervision: Ms. Zareen Tabassum (EE Research Associate and Lead Supervisor),
Mr. Hasan Shah (EE Research Assitant)
Office Hours: Availability via appointments over email
Course LMS URL: TBD
Course Prerequisites: A burning desire and a passion to experience the abc of Engineering
Design
Content Area: This course is recommended for all candidates planning to spend their four
years at HU with EE as a major. It is also an opportunity for others to
rethink their choices

I. Rationale:

Electronics is the most prevalent in our routine life be it ironing and washing of your cloths with
a fully automatic machine or transforming your mobile phone into an ever-available friend in
both your busy and leisure hours.

Electronics is making our millennials live a very different life, which their predecessors could not
even imagine about. ‘Joys of Electronics’ is not just a course but a community building effort of
EE program, where, they shall invite the best of their students in the roles of mentors working
closely with a group of 20 students on four different projects as per their interest.

II. Course Aims and Outcomes:

Aims

A course recommended for those who have some spark to interact with the world of electronics
transforming our life experience in the modern era. Curiosity is universal, fortunately, at Habib
University there is a whole body which celebrates joys and blessings of electronics in a
communal fashion. In books we refer to it as a Program awarding the prestigious Habib
University’s degree with a major in Electrical engineering, but in spirit it is a community
cherishing their ambitions and curiosity by complementing each other’s knowledge in the
discipline of Electrical engineering along with their contrasting preferences to some world-
transforming sub fields. The ‘Joys of Electronics’ is a Project based learning course that
introduces Electrical Engineering through a number of interesting projects. The pivotal to all
other objectives is to give our EE candidates a sense of achievement and unravel their touch of
creativity, by involving them in process, where they start from the scratch till the creation of an
‘Electronic Gadget’ of their collective desire as team.

1
Specific Learning Outcomes:
After the completion of the course students should be able to: Learning
domain
CLO 1 To lead with a pluralistic approach by amicably resolving any Affective –
conflicts in the team Team work
CLO 2 To start a project and manage a visible role Affective –
Project
management
CLO 3 To work with the basic electronic building blocks e.g. resistors, Psychomotor
sensors, actuators, motors and/or any digital hardware platform
CLO 4 To use tools and working in an Electrical Engineering lab Psychomotor
CLO 5 To use new and need-based knowledge in producing an Electrical Psychomotor
Engineering-based solution

III. Format and Procedures:

The course consists of 11 sessions altogether with the duration of each being 1.5 hours. In total
the course requires 16 hours of contact with the instructors, with an available option of using lab
hours for the project work not more than 6 hours in total. A major component of the course will
be an extensive project that will put to good use the knowledge that you have gained from the
Lab sessions.

IV. Inclusivity Statement

We understand that our members represent a rich variety of backgrounds and perspectives. Habib
University is committed to providing an atmosphere for learning that respects diversity. While
working together to build this community we ask all members to:

 share their unique experiences, values and beliefs

 be open to the views of others
 honor the uniqueness of their colleagues
 appreciate the opportunity that we have to learn from each other in this community
 value each other’s opinions and communicate in a respectful manner
 keep confidential discussions that the community has of a personal (or professional)
nature
 use this opportunity together to discuss ways in which we can create an inclusive
environment in this course and across the Habib community

V. Availability of Student Instructors:

The Instructors shall available to help and work along with you on the projects as your mentors.
There availability is limited to the mentioned contact hours plus 6 additional hours for any
specific tasks and agenda pertaining to the project work.

VI. Instructional Methodology

2
This team shall work under the direct supervision of two RAs from the EE program and
indirectly under the Student Success Committee. There is no pre-required knowledge expected
from the students, except an ever-sparking motivation to get hands dirty with some electronics.
We plan to offer a mix of 10% general interest lecturing, 45% under-instruction lab manual
based tasks and a 45% of active learning through developing an Electronic Gadget which can be
aligned to the sub-fields of Digital Electronics, Logic design, circuit theory, Automation, robotics
and sensors circuits or networks.
Through a series of projects in circuit design and other areas, this course aims to expose the
students to the fascinating world of electrical engineering. The course will allow the students to
gain an appreciation for the history and possible futures of various branches of electrical
engineering. Students will spend most of their time in the lab working on these projects with
some instruction for support.
Some Crucial learning outcomes specific to the discipline of the EE:
 Use electrical instruments such as function generators, digital multimeters, oscilloscopes,
power supplies, and construct circuits by soldering given a schematic diagram.
 Use passive/active circuit elements (resistors, capacitors, sensors, transformers, transistors,
op-amps, timers (555) and displays) based on their datasheets, color codes, or markings.
