During the later republic and most of the empire, Rome was the
dominant power in the entire Mediterranean basin, most of
western Europe, and large areas of northern Africa.
The roman empire was not only distinguished for its outstanding
army the foundation upon which the whole empire rested.but also
for its acomplishments in intellectual endeavours.

Causes of falling roman empire-
1.Invasions by barbarian tribes
The most straight forward theory for Western rome collapse
pins the fall on a string of military losses sustained against
outside forces. Rome had tangled with Germanic tribes for
centuries, but by the 300s “barbarian” groups like the Goths had
encroached beyond the Empire’s borders.

4. Overexpansion and military
overspending
As we know at peak roman empire was expanded from atlantic
ocean all the way to euphrates river in middle east, but its
grandeur may have also been its downfall.
Political Corruption
One of the most difficult problems was choosing a new emperor.
Unlike Greece where transition may not have been smooth but was
at least consistent, the Romans never created an effective system to
determine how new emperors would be selected. The choice was
always open to debate between the old emperor, the Senate, the
Praetorian Guard (the emperor's's private army), and the army.
Gradually, the Praetorian Guard gained complete authority to choose
the new emperor, who rewarded the guard who then became more
influential, perpetuating the cycle. Then in 186 A. D. the army
strangled the new emperor, the practice began of selling the throne
to the highest bidder. During the next 100 years, Rome had 37
different emperors - 25 of whom were removed from office by
assassination. This contributed to the overall weaknesses, decline
and fall of the empire.3

6. The arrival of the Huns and the
migration of the Barbarian tribes
The Barbarian attacks on Rome partially stemmed from a mass
migration caused by the Huns’ invasion of Europe in the late
fourth century. When these Eurasian warriors rampaged through
northern Europe, they drove many Germanic tribes to the
borders of the Roman Empire.

.7 Rise of christanity
EDWARD GIBBON has stated in his book(the fall of roman empire)
one of the many factors that contributed to the fall of the roman
empire was the rise of a new religion ,christanity, the christain
religion which was monotheistic ran counter to the traditional
Roman religion which was polytheistic(many god).
