Left center axle and center differential speed sensor
The MID 087, CID 3532 diagnostic code is associated with the center differential speed sensor. The
sensor outputs a square wave frequency input signal and can determine whether the sensor is electrically
connected to the Chassis ECM. When the sensor is not electrically connected to the ECM, the sensor
outputs an abnormal signal to indicate a disconnected sensor.
The speed sensors do not measure wheel speed directly. The sensors determine wheel speed from the

measured differential case speed and the side gear speed (same speed as the axle shaft). The ECM
detects the frequency of the signal change and uses the frequency to determine the speed of the wheel.
The FMI 08 diagnostic fault code activates when the following conditions occur on the differential
speed sensor:
An open in the power supply circuit to the speed sensor
An open in the return circuit to the speed sensor
An open in the speed sensor signal circuit to the speed sensor
A short to ground in the speed sensor signal circuit
A short to battery in the speed sensor signal circuit
The speed sensor has failed
The Chassis ECM has failed. An ECM failure is unlikely.
The inputs that impact the FMI 08 diagnostic codes are listed below:
Speed sensor
24 VDC Supply
8 VDC Supply
System Response:
ATC is not available
The ATC will automatically engage the interaxle lock clutch when throttle and retarding are
available
ATC lamp on the main cluster display will flash when the fault is active and a warning message
will pop up on the CMPD
Note: The CID 3532 FMI 08 diagnostic code may be an intermittent condition.
A. Do not disconnect the harness connector from the sensor.
B. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along
contact 1 (wire A105-OR) for the voltage supply and insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along
contact 2 (wire C241-BK) for the voltage return.
C. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position.

D. Measure the voltage from contact 1 (wire A105-OR) to contact 2 (wire C241-BK).
Expected Result:
The voltage is 8.0 ± 0.3 VDC.
Results:
OK - The voltage is 8.0 ± 0.3 VDC. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The voltage is not 8.0 ± 0.3 VDC.
Repair: Confirm the following fault codes are not active on the system:
MID 087 CID 0041 FMI 03 8 VDC Supply "Voltage above normal"
MID 087 CID 0041 FMI 04 8 VDC Supply "Voltage below normal"
If the fault codes are not active, repair or replace the sensor harness.
STOP
Test Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT OF THE SENSOR AT THE SENSOR
CONNECTOR
A. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
B. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, remove the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe from
contact 1.
C. Insert the probe along the signal wire (contact 3).
D. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, do not remove the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe
inserted in Step 1 for contact 2).
E. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
F. Monitor the frequency signal of the sensor with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .
Expected Result:
The Digital Multimeter reads a frequency value.
Results:
OK - The sensor signal outputs a frequency, which indicates the sensor is operating correctly.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The sensor signal does not output a frequency signal. The sensor has failed. Replace

Test Step 3. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT OF THE SENSOR AT THE ECM
A. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position. Remove the two 7X-1710
Digital Multimeter Probes from the sensor connector inserted in Step 2.
B. At the back of the ECM connector, insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along the signal wire J1-
9 on the ECM.
C. At the back of the harness connector for the ECM, insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along the
ground wire J1-45.
D. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
E. Monitor the frequency signal of the sensor with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .
Expected Result:
The 146-4080 Digital Multimeter reads a frequency value.
Results:
OK - The machine harness detects the frequency from the sensor. The machine harness is working
properly.
Repair: Replace the sensor.
STOP
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The signal circuit is shorted to another circuit in
the harness.
Repair: It is possible that the ECM has failed, but an ECM failure is unlikely. Exit this procedure
and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the problem is not found, contact the Technical
Communicator for your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation
may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM requires replacement, see Troubleshooting,
"Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace"
STOP
NOT OK - The machine harness does not detect the frequency from the sensor. The machine
harness is not working properly. Proceed to Test Step 4
Test Step 4. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT IN THE HARNESS
A. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the sensor and the Chassis ECM.

C. Measure the resistance between contact J1-9 (wire R852-BU) and each of the contacts that are
used in the machine harness connectors for the Chassis ECM.
Expected Result:
Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms, which indicates an open circuit.
Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The circuit is correct. Proceed to Test Step 5
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The signal circuit is shorted to another circuit in
the harness.
Repair: Repair or replace the machine harness.
STOP
A. Inspect the harness connectors and clean the contacts of the harness connectors. Check the wires
for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, corrosion, or chafing.
B. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) Pull Test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit.
C. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated and that the clips
for each connector are fastened.
D. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
E. Check the status of the CID 3532 FMI 08.
Expected Result:
The CID 3532 FMI 08 is not active.
Results:
OK - The CID 3532 FMI 08 is not active. The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a
poor connection or a short at one of the connectors that was disconnected and reconnected.
Resume normal operation..STOP
NOT OK - The CID 3532 FMI 08 is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.
Repair: Check the circuit again. Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool, if
available, in order to perform a "Wiggle Test" on the machine wiring harness. The "Wiggle Test"
can detect momentary shorts or an open connection in the machine wiring harness.An ECM
failure is unlikely. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the
problem is not found, contact the Technical Communicator for your dealership for possible
consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM
