45 Degree offset formula

swedishcharm21
Senior Member
We all know that 1.41 or 1.414 is the formula for figuring your 45 offset.

BUT!....let's say your working with 3/4" copper pipe. You got to offset 45 degrees.
Lets say a 10 inch offset. So, we come up with 14.14.

Nobody on here ever gives the numbers you must deduct for the fitting.

Back to the question. We are working with 3/4 pipe. We got a 10" offset. Our travel
Michigan piece is 14.14

What will the actual length be when you deduct the fittings?

I am amazed at how many know the offset formula, but still physically hold the pipe
up to the 45's and have to make another cut because they do not know how to
deduct for the fitting(s)

Your travel piece is 14 1/8" strong minus ¾" for the fittings, and no, I won't turn
that into decimals for you.

Killer, nice to meet you by the way. I know the answer to this. But to clarify for
those who do not, are you deducting 3/4" for each fitting or total?

Stillaround....tell that to an apprentice who needs to know this when they perform
a copper pratical at the journeyman exam......they would fail if they 'eyeballed".
Eyeballing it does not cut it.

Since you are into eyeballing.........tell us all how you deduct your fitting for a 13.5"
offset with 3 " PVC Sch40. Actual length of travel piece, minus fittings. And what
exactly did you deduct for those fittings.

PLUMBER 3/4 is the deduction for both fittings combined ....3/8 for each ..... You can
Registered Member measure it on the fitting if you don't know it or don't have a take off book....

PLUMBER First convert to fractions. 14.14. You take .14 x 8 = 1.12 since .12 is under .50 you
Registered Member drop it ( if it wer above .50 you would round up and add a 1 to the whole number)
so now you have 1 witch you just put over whatever number you multiplied it by I

always use 8. But 16 or 32 work great also So 1/8 = .14. You have. 14 1/8 ". Now
take off 3/4 .... 3/8 per fitting( if I remember rite I always check the fitting) 14 1/8
My Photos - 3/4 = 13 3/8. That is your cut length!!!!
