Importance of Technology in Schools. Contemporary Educational Technology, 4(3), 187-196.

INTRODUCTION
Research Questions (if research questions are not specifically mentioned, what
is the theoretical background or overarching theme):
 What are principals’ perceptions of the
importance of technology?

 Do principals’ perceptions of technology differ by years of

experience and gender?

Purpose of the research:

The purpose of this research is to figure out how principles’ perception of technology
affects the technology integration into a school system.

METHODOLOGY

What is the methodology for the research or approach used to understand the
issue? Provide information regarding the following:

Participants: 310 principals from a large metropolitan area in the southwest

region of the United States

Procedures: Some graduate students in the Educational Leadership program

at a major administered the questionnaire. The students were trained how to
interview the principles and how to administer the questionnaire.
Data Collection Methods/Data Source: The principles answered some
survey questions which were both qualitative and quantitative.

Data Analysis: The first step of the analysis is data reduction. Analysts read
the answers a few times to become familiar with them and then they coded the
responses into different categories. When this step was done, an independent
analysist also coded a small portion, 10%, of the study to test the consistency
of the analysis. The results of two different coding showed high level of
agreement. (Cohen’s kappa = .94).

RESULTS

Findings or Results (or main points of the article):

 One-third (35%) of the principals stated that technology was used as a primary
communication tool.
 Over one-quarter (28%) of principals responded that technology was
integrated in teachers’ classroom instruction.
 14% of the principles said that technology used for data sharing and
management
 15 %of the principles indicated that technology used as a resource to
find information
 10% of the principles stated that technology was also used for
administrative tasks, such as taking attendance. And,
 10% of the principles said that technology was used for student
learning.

DISCUSSIONS

Conclusions/Implications (for your profession):

The conclusion for the study is that the principles see the technology as an important
tool for education. The areas of the use of technology in these schools can be
categorize into four different domains: data sharing and management, as a resource,
for administrative tasks and for student learning. Lastly, the research also points out
that the principles’ perception of technology changes by sex and years of experience.

REFLECTIONS

Student’s Reflections (changes to your understanding; implications for your

school/work):
As a being teacher in the 21st century and a part of a STEM school, I strongly believe
that the integration of technology into today’s classrooms are essential and the most
important way to make sure that our students are ready for the future. In my school,
we are strongly encouraged to integrate technology into our lessons and also get
additional support in terms of how to do it properly. We use many different software as
a part of our curriculum and teachers also find different resources in addition to what
we are already provided by our school. I personally use technology in my classroom
almost daily basis and I am always in the look for new tools to integrate.
