This study aimed to know the real score in the lives of an academically achieving
students who belong in an Unconventional family, their coiping mechanisms and the
challenges behind their successes in the academic field. Qualitative methods were
employed in the analysis of 3 students in who are academically achievers as a member of
a unconventional family. In-depth interviews extracts were used to validate the findings in
the study.

Three affiliations were found out to be associated in the students as they deal with their
academes which are influenced by families, and its set up. The study found out that these
affiliations are great factors in being a academically achieving student who belongs in a
unconventional family.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Situation Analysis

Family isn't always blood related. It's those people in your life who want you in

their lives too; the ones who accept you for who you are, those who accepts you despite

of being not blood related. Those ones who would do anything to see you smile and who

would love you no matter what.

Family is one of the most important weapon to achieve our dreams in life. It is

important to all students to help them to pursue their goals. It is one of the most

influential factors in society. The parents are important to every child and it helps the

youth to develop a good behavior which affects the outlook of their future of every

Filipino child. A Filipino family can really help to build a good attitude of every person

or a child, it also helps a person to honor his dignity and bring achievements to each

member. That is how family are important to Filipino people. A complete family that

bonds with each other and gives love can be a good example to the society. It also

important to show the family’s and being complete. A family that can support, love, fight,

and guide you through thick and thin.

However, a Unconventional Family is a family whom parents doesn’t live

together in a roof, or separated rather. Unconventional Family can be those families with

one or both parents were deceased. Sometimes, parents are separated, their children lives

with one of their parents. Or the children stays with their grandparents if both of their

parents have a new set of new family. A Unconventional family is the indifference of

two couple, the husband and the wife has their own way of life without each other and

only their children wil be left and the one who suffer the most. The problem of having a

broken family can have a lot of negative results on the children’s attitude.

A Unconventional Family, also is a broken home when once the parent has its

own new family of their own, and the children are being left without them knowing.

Their parents are separated and sometimes the parents decide who will have the custody

of their children. The children can also be separated from their siblings if their parent is

separated. In this case, the children will be the one to choose whom they want to be with.

This research isn't only about Unconventional Family but will also show the

story of an honor student who belongs to a unconventional family. Furthermore ,this

research is also about the achievements of the students who stands alone in life. This

research is needed further to conduct an investigation by the use of interview to

determine the life of an Honor Student despite of being a part of an unconventional

family also, its negative and positive effects.

Framework of the Study

This discussion presents theories, research findings, insights, generalizations and

ideas which aided in the methodological design of the study about an honor student who

belongs to a Unconventional Family.

Theories and Concept on Unconventional Family

Mokitale Theory (Moises Mokitale, 2015). Mokitale believes that nothing is

hard to do if you pursue it through perseverance. October 21, 2015 Mokitale posted an

article in his blog about the story of a 41 orphaned students who completely graduated.

But in the article that he wrote he only posted one inspiring story about the life of Sharon

Lakot. At the age of 6, Sharon Lakot 24, was already orphan. Both of her parents died

during the 20th year long LRA in Northern Uganda. Her father died before she was born

and her mother died at six years after birth. Sharon Lakot adopted her by her auntie in

Gulu. In 2010, After finishing her secondary education, Sharon sought a job as a

supermarket attendant and worked for more than 18 months hoping to fund her university

education but in vain. World Vision Uganda that’s the one who help Sharon Lakot to

achive her goal in life. World Vision Uganda helping the orphan students for their

financial and studies. In 2015, Sharon Lakot together with the other selected students

graduated at the University of Uganda. Sharon graduated with a first class degree in

Microfinance, emerging as best over all student in the academic year 2015. Sharon Lakot

is a strong woman, and she didn’t stop to achive her goals in life no matter what. There

are many challenges that came into her life but through determination and hardwork she

achieved it.

Adesalous Theory (Dayu Adesalous, 2017). Adesalous believes that many

illiterates in our society and the never-do-wells blame their parents for their lack of

education and fate. In August 21, 2017 he posted the story of Anthonia Crystabel Nya,

23, a graduate of Computer Engineering at Caleb University, Imota, Lagos has changed

the narrative. Though an orphan, with determination, hard work and self discipline, she

emerged the best graduating student with a 4.81 Cumulative Grade Point Average

(CGPA). Nya, who hails from Cross River State, lost her parents as a teenager. Her father

died first then her mother and within two years, leaving her devastated as the last child.

Nya was however determined to further her education and she performed excellently in

her junior and senior WAEC to the admiration of her brother in-law who vowed to

sponsor her tertiary education. Her brother in-law did not only sponsor her education but

made sure she attended one of the best private universities in Nigeria. Nya’s father was

a clergyman and her mother was a business woman. She had the benefit of good

upbringing as she imbibed the virtues of diligence and discipline in addition to being

intellectually talented. Asked about her social life, she said though she is sociable, but

didn’t keep boy friends. “I neither kept boy friends on campus or off campus,” she said.

Statement of the Problem

The study determined the life of an honor students who belongs to

Unconventional Family specifically, the study answered the following question:

1.) What are the challenges and coping mechanism of an academically achieving

students admist belong to a Unconventional Family?

Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of this research report, the following terms are

operationally defined as:

1. Academically Achievers- are learners in the academe of different disciplines who

attain their aspirations as to excel.

2. Parents- are persons who are extending their love, care or affection, and guidance

toward their children be they biologically related or just by affinity.

3. Students- are those who are matriculated or enrolled at a learning institution, and

are going through a learning process.

4. Unconventional Family- doesn't have to be related by sanguinity. It is a group of

persons bound by shared or common beliefs, has love for each of the members, and

not necessarily living under one roof.

Importance of the Study

This study will be an eye-opener for every student especially on how they deal

with people who is a member of a Unconventional Family. This can also be a reference

to the teachers to understand, distinguish and asses the academic performances of their

students as well as their behaviors. Parents can also determine one of the factors to

consider regarding their childs emotional and academic status as they study. This can also

serve as a reference for future researches who will have the same field of study or for

those those who want to elaborate and expand this study.

Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The study uses narrative design because it narrates the lives or situation of

a academically achieving students who belongs in a unconventional family. The said

design perfectly fits for the study for easier analyzation of the study. This arrative

Design is a term that subsumes a group of approaches that inturn rely on the written

or spoken words or visual representation of individuals. The said approaches typically

focus on the lives of individuals.

Sources of Data

The sources of the data will be coming from the randomly picked participants

who fits for the study. The response of the said participants will be use to determine the

real story behind the study. The study involves 3 students from Grade 11 learners who

are officially enrolled in Rosario Integrated School.

Instrumention and data collection

The researchers made use of a face to face and online interview in order to

identify the story behind the participants lives as they deal among the challenges of

being an academically achiever student who belongs in a unconventional family. The

researchers will be gathering the needed data in the study using interview that will

last within 3 hours so they can clearly elaborate the said story of the participants.

Analysis of Data

The researchers conducted an in-depth interview in gathering data as well as

the stories behind every circumstances and struggles that an academically achiever

student who belong to an unconventional family have. The researchers had chosen the

open coding analysis for their gathered data for more deepened analyzation of the

study. The said responses will be soon transcribed for the justification and satisfaction

of the study.

THEME A: UNACCEPTANCE

“Parang ayoko na, bakit pa kami hindi ‘yung iba.” (Emotional Affiliation) lies the emoti

onal issues of the participant, when it talks about being in an Unconventional Family. On

e of the common difficulties of the participant emotional affiliations is by having emotion

al breakdowns.

THEME B: VENERATION

“Yung step father ko, napaka supportive” (Physical Affiliations) shows the physical invol

vements of the participant’s family in dealing with her current family setting.

THEME C: FAITH

“ Keep on praying” (Spiritual Affiliations) describes the spiritual involvements of the pa

rticipant which serves as an assistnance, extended by the participants faith.

Chapter 3

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The results of the study are summed up in this figure. It shows three themes generated fr

om the interviews and storytelling. These are the following: “Parang ayoko na, bakit pa

kami hindi ‘yung iba” (Emotional Affiliations), “Yung step father ko, napaka supportive.

” (Physical Affiliations), and “Keep praying” (Spiritual Affiliation). These dimensions of

affiliations come at varying extent.

Theme No. 1 “Parang ayoko na, bakit hindi ‘yung iba.”

Emotional Affiliations entailed the emotional issues pf the participant as it deals on he

r situation. For instance, participant no. 1 detailed how devastated she is when her parents

passed away. That there are times that he asked herself a lot of ‘why’s’, and how her emo

tional state changes at times go by. “Biglang gumuho’yung mundo naming magkakapati

d, kasi siya na nga lang ‘yung natitira sa’min tapos bigla pang ganun, that time nagtano

ng ako kay lord, bakit?”

Emotional involvements of participants is bounded emotional distress. This concludes tha

t children who belongs in a Unconventional Family usually suffers from emotional distres

s that can affect their academic performances which either positive or negative. Furtherm

ore, parents who usually get along with their children despite of the situation helps childr

en’s emotional state. For the family keeping their relationship intact with their children w

ould create a good impact on their children.

This result further confirms the conclusion found in earlier studies that parent parent-chil

d relationship was found to be important in supporting children, despite of having family

issues such as being in a Unconventional Family.

Theme No. 2 “Yung step father ‘ko, napaka supportive.”

Physical Affiliations describes involvement of participants family as she deals with

her family setting. As for participant 3, she deatailed how her family gves her non-stop su

pport, especially her step dad, which is obviously entailing their blood relativity.

“Mabait ‘yung step father ko, siya ‘pa nga nagbibigay ng gamit ko like cellphone,’yung

mga gamit ko na nakikita ninyo.”

For participant 1, she detailed how her siblings gives hee support through out everything.

“Yung relationship naming magkakapatid, mas naging strong kasi sila ‘yung nagsilbing

parents ko.”

The quote therefore concludes thay physical affiliations plays a great role in rearing child

ren, as they give them undying support in everything they do. Especially those children w

ho came in a Unconditional Family that was found out needing physical involvements.

Theme No. 3 “Keep praying, faith on god.”

This statement concluded that spiritual affiliations among children that serves as an

assistance, or guide to help them grow as they continue their lives. Participant 2, for exam

ple who is having family issues describes situation in these words: “Keep on praying, fait

h on god.” This statements confirms conclusions found in earlier study that having a spir

itual affiliation is also a must in supporting and rearing children as they grow up. This aff

iliation comes in extent of faith.

Chapter 4

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

CONCLUSION

The affiliations is summed up in three dimensions as the following: a) Emotional

Affiliation entails the emotional distress associated with the academically achieving

students who came from a unconventional family. b) Physical Affilation which states the

physical association of the family towards the participants and c)Spiritual Affiliation which

stated the religious and spiritual affiliations of the participants who belong to a

unconventional family.

This study aimed to determine the challenges and coping mechanism of an academic

achiever students amidst to belong in a unconventional family. The study made use of

transcript from the recent interviews they conducted, and to ensure that the study has a

justifiable corpus, the researcher analyzed amount of the transcripts well. The aims of the

study were achieved in the sense that all of the questions were answered.

This research established that the involvement of the childrens family is relevant in the

daily lives of the academically achiever students who belongs into unconventional family.

Also, the study focused on the Filipino children, which are academically achiever who

belongs in a unconventional family, using the narrative design. The study also found out

several issues like emotional distress which is included with one of the themes. Students,

who are academically achieving students was found out to be emotionally stressed, and

needs their family’s guidance all through out. The inclusion of spiritual issued were also

one of this study have found out.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are

offered:

Researchers should deepen their analysis about the data they will be gathering,

it’ll help them find more about the study. Researchers should elaborate things under

the different affiliations which could help in presenting the gathered data. Researchers

should be able to identify more of the affiliations associated in the study. Three

affiliations were found out in the study , thus there might be some addition aside

from the first three mentioned.

Participant: Uhm, okay lang sabi ko nga, uhm masaya ako masaya sa bahay, masaya sa sa

school, kuntento na ako kung ano man.

Interviewer: Pano mo nasasabing kuntento ka, at masaya ka?

Participant: Syempre andun ‘yung family ko, kuntento na ako ‘dun. Tsaka dun ‘yung sa cl

assroom, masaya naman ‘yung mga classmate ‘ko, tsaka ‘yun yung nagpapakuntento sa’ k

in.

Interviewer: So ‘yun nga nasabi mo na masaya at tsaka kuntento ka sa buhay mo, paano m

o naman nasabi na masaya at kuntento ka?

Participant: Uhmmm.. Masaya ako kasi ‘yung mga taong nasa paligid ‘ko masaya rin,at u

hm.. (pauses) kung may problema man, at least nalalagpasan ‘yun. Dun ako nagigiging m

asaya.

Interviewer: Sino ‘yung mga tao na ‘yun?

Participant: Family ko. Ate ko, mga kuya ko, mga pamangkin ko, sila ‘yung nagpapasaya

sakin everyday.

Interviewer: Uhm so, pano ka makisalamuha sa ibang tao ‘pag nasa ibang lugar ka?

Participant: Uhm sa una, uhm ako kasi ‘yung tao na sa una, hindi mamamansin. Syempre

‘di ko pa kilala ang isang tao, siguro uhm, pag nakilala ko na ng matagal, dun ako magigi

ng comfortable sa isang tao, ‘dun ko nailalabas ‘yung sarili ko.

Interviewer: Ah, paano mo naman mailalarawan ‘yung settings ng family mo?

Participant: Sa bahay, uhm sa bahay? Sa bahay kasi lima lang kami, Ako, ‘yung ate ko, ‘y

ung kapaatid ‘kong bunso, ‘yung asawa niya tsaka ‘yung pamangkin ko. So yun. Okay na

man, masaya kasi kahit papaano, kahit malayo ‘yung mga kapatid ko sa’kin may mga com

munication naman kami, may cellphone naman, may tawag ganun. Tsaka ‘pag may mga b

irthday, magkakasama naman kaming lahat.

Interviewer: So honor student ka?

Participant: Oo, since grade.. (pauses) hindi, since nag aral ako dito sa uhm, RIS. Napapa

natili ko naman ng ganun, ‘di ko lang alam sa fourth grading (chuckles)

Interviewer: So.. So ayun nga, ano ‘yung nagiging motivation mo para mag aral ka ng ma

buti tsaka, (pauses) ‘yun nga.

Participant:Syempre, first ‘yung motivation ko talaga uhm family, saka ‘yung iniisip ko ri

n kasi ‘yung pangarap sa’kin ng parents ko. ‘yun ‘yung nagiging motivation ko araw-araw

. Para yun, maging honor student nga.

Interviewer: Uhm, ‘yun.. (pauses) ano nga ‘yung ano pangarap ng parents mo para sayo?

Participant: Uhm, pangarap sakin ng parents ko, makapag tapos lang ng pag aaral, iba kas

i ‘yung kay papa.. ‘yung kay papa kasi gusto niya talagang sumunod ako sa yapak niya. ‘y

un talaga ang pangarap ng papa ko sa’kin. Kasi sa’ming magkakapatid walang sumunod s

a yapak niya, so parang.. Sa’kin niya ginugol ‘yung, “eto Joan, ikaw dapat ‘yung ganito, g

anyan..

Interviewer: Ano ba dati ‘yung trabaho ng parents mo, ‘yung papa mo, sabi mo nga.

Participant: Uhm si papa, uhm isa siyang pulis. Ahm, si mama naman sa bahay lang, alag

aan kami.

Interviewer: ‘Di ba sabi mo na honor student ka, so ikuwento mo naman behind your succ

ng iba.May part talaga sa’kin hindi mo maalis ‘yun, ‘yung may part talaga sa’kin na gusto

kuya ‘ko may asawa na nga siya nasa Ilocos, so si ate lagi ‘yung sinasamahan ako sa reco

Participant: Okay lang.

Interviewer: Paano mo nasabing okay ka lang?

Participant: Kasi nakakaya ‘ko ‘yung mga nangyayari sa kabila aking mga problema.

Interviewer: Anu-ano naman ‘yung mga problemang pinagdadaanan mo sa iyong buhay?

Participant: Uhm, sa ngayon ‘yung problema ‘ko sa sarili ‘ko kasi ‘nung Friday nadi-depr

ess na ako tapos kahapon kinausap ako ng pamilya ‘ko para akong sinabihan ako na kaya

ko lahat, tapos ganun. Tapos meron ‘yung time na gusto na akong ipamigay kay papa ‘ko

kasi broken family nga ako tas may iba na silang asawa. So ‘yun sinabi ko lahat ng proble

ayo, iga-guide ka sa lahat kaya ganun.

Interviewer: Paano mo mailalarawan ang family setting n’yong family mo?

Participant: Mailalarawan ‘ko ‘yung family setting ‘ko sa pamamagitan ng nakatira ako sa

grandparents ‘ko, tapos meron ‘yung time na pupunta sila sa bahay namin, ‘pag may okas

yon. Nagsasalo-salo kami,‘kung may problema pinag uusapan namin at nireresolba at wal

ang iwanan.

Interviewer: Paano mo naman nalalagpasan ‘yung mga pagsubok na dumadating sa buhay

mo kagaya nalang sa school at sa tahanan niyo?

Participant: Uhmm, ginagawa ko lang is keep on praying, faith on god, dapat igina-guide

mo ang sarili mo sa pamamagitan ng dasal, sa pamamagitan ng isip at gawa kasi ‘pag wal

Participant: Nakikisalamuha ako sa pamamagitan nh ‘pag “hi” katulad ‘nung grade 10 ako

. Transferee kasi ako, tapos una ‘komg nakilala si Ashley Hufana. Siya ‘yung taong nag a

Interviewer: Kung okay lang sa’yo, pwede ka bang mag kuwento behind your success as a

honor student?

Participant: Naging honor student ako sa pamamagitan ng inspiration ko’yung mga kapati

d ko sa ama dahil may top sila tapos syempre sinasabi niya na ‘wag ka magboyfriend eh a

ko matigas ang ulo, kaya ano (pauses) ganun pa ‘din, pero ginagawa ‘kong inspiration sila

Participant: ‘Yung mga siansabi nila sa’kin, ‘wag daw kumuha ng TVL kasi kaya ko nam

an daw magluto kahit walang nagtuturo, kasi palagi naman ako nanonood sa youtube kay

a namamana ko sa mommy ko, tapos ‘yung sinabi nila, kunin kong strand HUMSS or ST

EM na lang daw eh sabi ko, dito ako masaya, dito ‘ko na f-feel free’yung sarili ko na i-ex

Participant: Oo, naisipaan ko na, pero sa oras-oras na pag iyak ko araw araw, hindi na rin

ako kumakain, palagi akong niyayakap ng mga pinsan ko kaya ayun, sabay-sabay kaming

nag pi-pray, tapos wala na. Di na ako nag gi-give up, parang pinipilit kong ngumiti at mag

ing masaya sa lahat.

Interviewer: So sino ‘yung inspirasyon mo ngayon?

Participant: Ang inspirasyon ko ngayon ay yung lola ko, tsaka ‘yung tito ko kasi sa ngayn

, nagdadaan talaga ako matinding stress dahil nga iniwan ako ng ex ko kasi nga may bago

na siya, tapos ‘yun masakit kasi kaka-break palang, pinakita na niya na wala akong kwent

a, tapos ‘yung ugali ko may pagka maldita din kaya sinabi na lang ni mama ko ‘wag ko la

ng daw ‘yun isipin at gayahin ko yung tito ko. Hindi naman kasi sa lahat ng sitwasyon, lo

Participant: Uhm, meron akong bonding with my friends, classmates tapos maraming free

time, ayun. Kasi walang teachers.

Interviewer: So ito ‘yung question number 1 namin, how’s your everyday life?

Participant: Uhm, typical lang naman na buhay ng isang estudyante, papasok ng maaga m

agka-klase tapos makikipagkulitan sa mga kaklase, sa mga kaibigan ‘ko, uuwi sa bahay g

agawin ang trabaho ‘ko doon tapos bonding time with my family, tapos ayun, okay naman

‘yung pakikitungo ng family ‘ko sa akin.

Interviewer: So how do you describe your family setting?

Participant: Uhm, uhmm.. Mayroon akong step father kasi ‘yung nanay ‘ko at ‘yng real fa

ther ‘ko naghiwalay sila noong five years old ako.. Kasi uhm, sa ano, si papa ko kasi noon

g sila pa ni mama ‘ko may tatlong asawa si papa ‘ko, pangalawa si mama ‘ko so sa’min k

asi ang tradisyon namin, normal lang na ganun karaming asawa. Uhm, kung kayang buha

yin ‘nung lalaki. So pumunta si papa ‘ko sa mindanao, nagtagal siya doon ng mga 3 mont

‘ko, kaya nakipaghiwalay siya at the age of 5, naghiwalay sila ni mama ‘ko kaya nagkaro

al at makakuha ng achievements sa school. Para maipakita ko naman na may silbi lahat ng

ginawa ng nanay ko saakin. Tas nung nakita ko rin siya ng na broke din siya siguro masak

it din yung ganon na nakikita ko siyang umiiiyak.

Interviewer: Last question, who is your inspiration right now?

Participant: Inspirasyon ko? Ang inspirasyon ko ngayon is yung family ko kasi despite na

kahit na naaaaa. may pagsubok sa buhay yung I mean minsan kasi mahirap din dun sa bus

iness namin. Minsan walang mabenta pero ginawa pa din nila yung makakaya nila para m

apag-aral kami ng mga kapatid ko. Tiyaka yung step father ko, kahit step ko lang siya, bin

ibigyan niya ako ng uhm binibigay niya yung gusto namin ng kapatid ko. Minsan siya pa

ang naghahanap ng pera na kahit na hindi niya kami kadugo uhm parang willing siyang ib

igaya ng gusto namin kaya siguro uhhh sila yung inspirasyon ko sa buhay.
