General meaning of health and safety – why is it important to be fit?

At the end of the lesson students will be able to
 Describe what WHO standards of health and safety
 Understand the roles & responsibilities of people involved in work place of UK health and safety at
work act 1974

How I am going to introduce the day’s lesson


WHO defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
WHO defines safety as “the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger,
20 mins risk, or injury”.

Content

Main Objectives:
(i) the maintenance and promotion of workers’ health and working capacity;
(ii) (ii) the improvement of working environment and work to become conducive to safety and
health
(iii) (iii) development of work organizations and working cultures in a direction which supports
health and safety at work and in doing so also promotes a positive social climate and
smooth operation and may enhance productivity of the undertakings.
(iv) how to avoid particular pre-existing conditions causing a problem in the occupation, correct
posture for the work, frequency of rest breaks, preventative action that can be undertaken.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 emphasizes wide-ranging duties on employers.
Employees, Manufacturers / Suppliers

Employers must protect the 'health, safety and welfare' at work of all their employees, as
well as others on their premises, including temps, casual workers, the self-employed,
clients, visitors and the general public.
Employees must not misuse tools, spoil equipment, fight with other workers and cause
possible harm or injury to others by their carelessness.

 Duties of employers – provide safe equipment, plant and machinery;
 Employ safe and competent people workers
 carrying out risk assessments as set out in regulations, and taking steps to eliminate or
control these risks;
 informing workers fully about all potential hazards associated with any work process,
chemical substance or activity, including providing instruction, training and supervision;
