THEORY OF NATURAL SELECTION IN THE EDUCATION OF RADIOLOGY RESIDENT.

USE OF

iPad®, iPhone®, Mac® COMPUTERS AND APPLICATIONS (APPS) AS CURRENT ACADEMIC

TOOLS

ABSTRACT: Just as Darwin proposed the theory of natural selection to explain the evolution stating

that the fittest individuals tend to survival, an analogy with technological progress is set noting that

over time has grown exponentially with the permanence of those that provide greater benefits,

simultaneously Radiology area has grown and has multiple diagnostic modalities which are integrated

with computer knowledge. The iPhone®, iPad® and Mac® computers are portable instruments for

reading electronic books and magazines, web browsing, email, interactive distance communication

and also have multiple Apps structured specifically in the area of radiology, likewise they constitute a

ecological strategy for learning since they minimize environmental impact.This study was performed

during the period January 2014 - January 2015 using a survey of 10 questions to twentyfive residents

of Radiology and imaging diagnosis with the objective to determine the utility of iPad® , iPhone® and

Mac® computers and their applications (Apps) as tools today for the training of radiology residents.

The study revealed that 100% of the residents consider useful and beneficial using these instruments

in their training as radiology residents and make everyday use of them, the apps most used were

Radiology, RECIST 1.1, TNM Classification 7th edition, Radiopaedia and Radiographics.

Evolutionary changes in terms of academic training of radiologist towards a digitized education does

not seek to replace textbooks, but to learn to innovate ways to increase efficiency, achieving to

demonstrate with this (just like the theory of natural selection has done) that with the pass of time the

better adapted is the one who has a greater chance of success.

TEORIA DE LA SELECCIÓN NATURAL EN LA EDUCACION DEL RESIDENTE DE RADIOLOGIA.

USO DE IPAD®, IPHONE®, COMPUTADORAS MAC® Y SUS APLICACIONES (APPS) COMO

HERRAMIENTAS ACADÉMICAS ACTUALES.

ABSTRACT:

Así como Darwin planteó la teoría de la selección natural para explicar la evolución proponiendo que

los individuos más adaptados tenderán a la supervivencia, se establece una analogía con el progreso

tecnológico observando que con el paso del tiempo se ha experimentado un crecimiento exponencial

con la permanencia de aquellos que proporcionan mayores beneficios, simultáneamente el área de

Radiología ha ido creciendo y cuenta con múltiples modalidades diagnosticas que se integran con

los conocimientos informáticos. El Iphone®, Ipad® y computadoras Mac® son instrumentos portátiles

que permiten lectura de libros y revistas electrónica, navegación web, correo electrónico,

comunicación interactiva a distancia y además cuentan con múltiples Apps estructuradas

específicamente en el área de radiología, asi mismo constituyen una estrategia ecológica para el

aprendizaje minimizando el impacto ambiental. Se realizó un estudio de campo cualitativo con

investigación descriptiva, prospectiva y transversal aplicando una encuesta de 10 preguntas a

veinticinco residentes de postgrado de Radiología y diagnóstico por imágenes durante el Período

Enero 2014 – Enero 2015 y se planteó como objetivo determinar la utilidad de IPad®, IPhone® y

computadoras Mac® así como de sus aplicaciones (Apps) como herramientas útiles en la actualidad

para la formación del residente de radiología. El estudio reveló que 100% de los residentes considero

útil y beneficioso el uso de estos instrumentos en su formación como residentes de radiología y que

hacen uso diario de los mismos, las Apps más usadas fueron Radiology, Recist 1.1, TNM

Classification 7th edition, Radiopaedia y Radiographics. Los cambios evolutivos en cuanto a la

formación académica del médico radiólogo hacia una educación digitalizada no buscan sustituir

los libros de texto, sino innovar formas de aprendizaje para aumentar la eficacia, logrando

demostrar con esto (así como lo ha hecho la teoría de la selección natural) que con el pasar del

tiempo aquel que está mejor adaptado tendrá mayores posibilidades de alcanzar el éxito.
