Topic/TITLE: Organizational Chart

“The organization structure is a way for people to find us and deal with us and know how to operate.” –
Mitchell Baker.
This quote got me thinking the organizational chart is really useful and serve as a guide for every
employee to their rights and responsibilities in every company or organization.

During the discussion, I learned that there are different types of organizational structure. However, I got
more a keen to hierarchical chart since DepEd is using this chart.

The hierarchy chart is also known as the traditional org chart is the graphical representation of an
organization's structure. Its purpose is to illustrate the relationships and relative ranks of job positions within the
organization. Employee names and titles and/or job positions are generally depicted in boxes or circles with
lines linking them to other employees and departments. By looking at the org chart, people can gain a quick
understanding of how the organization is designed, its number of levels and where each employee fits into the
organization.

Using this chart, it shows better reporting structure – employees know who to report to, who to contact
when there is an issue that needs resolving or a question that needs to be answered. This is especially important
in large organizations where there are many departments. Someone else from another department can quickly
get in touch with the relevant person of another department. It helps new employees – enables them to get to
know the people he or she is working with even before meeting them, thus helping them to connect much more
easily.

Additionally, it helps to manage workload – A well-managed organizational chart helps to visualize the
workload of individuals. This is especially useful to manage the workload of managers because you can see
how many people they are managing and, in some cases, how many departments are under them. Moreover, the
organizational chart makes planning easier because you can visualize the structure for any plans. You can
allocate resources better, quickly find competencies of individuals and much more.

Organizational charts have also limitations. First, they can quickly become out of date, especially in
organizations with a large amount of turnover. Online charts are easier to update than printed ones, but even
online charts can become outdated if not tended to regularly. This can be mitigated with editable online
documents, as well as automation, such as employee departures and arrivals triggering Org Chart updates.
Second, they show only formal relationships, and not the informal or social relationships that help to get
things done in an organization. To show informal relationships that exist in an organization, you might want to
consider making an account map, which you can learn more about. Third, they don't reflect the management
style. They show lines of authority, but not how that authority is exercised.

I began teaching in the Senior High School in 2016, the first batch of instructors. Before I applied, I've
read useful books and articles so I can fully understand the Senior High Curriculum. There, I studied the
organizational chart of the Senior High School. Before I got in, I have knowledge based on my understanding
and even asking opinions from higher-ups and during our Regional Training for Senior High Teachers. What I
understood is that Stand Alone SHS has an Assistant Principal but for those Integrated Senior High they share
the same Principal with the Junior High but not on other matters. In other words, they should not compare the
SHS from the JHS especially on how they work because absolutely the subjects are different that requires
different needs and requirements.

It is really hard on our part to explain one by one regarding the SHS program. But guess what, that’s my
job, our job. As a part of DepEd organization, I have to obey first for me to lead.
In conclusion, although extremely useful for many purposes, organizational charts are not for everybody.
Choose the less traditional format that best suits your needs. Make sure that the chart is updated, though it will
be hard especially for large organizations with the online organizational chart we have right now, you can easily
edit whatever changes so as not to create confusion among employees.
