Career Spot
By Tony Higgins

When young people at school think about their future jobs and how they should prepare for
them they usually ask their parents and teachers for advice. Caitlin Moran, however, never
needed career advice. Now aged 18, Caitlin is seen once a week introducing a popular
television programmer and she writes regularly for the times newspaper.

The only certificate Caitlin got at school was one for swimming, but at 13 she won a
competition organized by a large bookstore and became Young reader/writer of the year.
Two ears later she became Young reporter of the year for a Sunday newspaper.
She explains: I just thought to myself one day “I want to be a writer”. Although a teacher once
said I wrote well, nobody ever suggested writing, or anything else, as a career. School
stopped me being naturally curious about things and that meant I lost interest in studying. I
quit school at the age of 11 and finished my education at home. I taught myself to be a writer
by reading. If you are an independent person like me, you don´t need anyone to show you
what to do, either with you studies or with finding an interesting occupation. It´s not the same
for everybody, but it has worked for me.
