An architect and freelance journalist, he focuses on design, teaching and criticism of architecture and design.
He has written for the major magazines in the sector (Bruno Zevi’s L’Architettura cronache e storia, Abitare,
Domus) and been published by Corraini, Libria, Maggioli and IEEM/Polipress. He is on the editorial staff
of Inventario. He draws visionary strip cartoons on the subject of architecture. He lives and works in Milan.

Una delle riflessioni più interessanti che oggi
investono il mondo della progettazione riguarda
la qualità dello spazio pubblico. Il tema è cruciale
ed è diventato strategico ai fini dello sviluppo
urbano. Coinvolge l’architettura, il design, gli
studi urbanistici e quelli paesaggistici, ma pure
l’arte, l’economia e il marketing. Non è più
soltanto responsabilità del progettista e del
committente, pubblico o privato che sia. La sua
natura è diventata plurale. I soggetti coinvolti
sono molti e comprendono i
fruitori in un ruolo rilevante.
Progettare lo spazio pubblico
in modo appropriato oggi
significa immaginare ampi
margini di libertà, anche
creativa, per chi lo vivrà con
l’obiettivo di rendere quello
spazio realmente utilizzabile
e ricco di significati. Di
conseguenza non sembra
più possibile dedicarsi alla
sistemazione degli spazi

One of the most interesting issues currently under
discussion within the world of planning concerns
the quality of public space. This theme is a crucial
one and has become of strategic importance in
terms of urban development. As well as
architecture, design and urban and landscape
studies, the question of public space also
encompasses art, economics and marketing. And
this is no longer solely seen as the responsibility of
planners and their clients, be they public or private.
The quality of space is a plural
question. The actors involved

are many and users also have a
significant part to play.
Planning public space in an
appropriate way is also an area
which is flexible and creative,
including for those people who
will occupy that space, with
the aim of rendering it truly
useable and rich in meaning.
Thus it no longer seems
possible to tack on the
question of the layout of public
spaces at the end of the
planning process. An integration of plans – public/
private, internal/external, buildings/free areas – is
necessary to the extent that the open spaces of a
district can come to life while work on its buildings
is still going on, just as is happening at King’s
Cross in the heart of London. Or the regeneration
of an entire section of the city can stem solely
from the design of its public spaces, without a
single building being constructed or renovated, as
can be seen from many of the other experiences

fino all’8 gennaio 2017 una mostra alla
straordinaria figura dell’imprenditore
milanese Paolo Venini (1895-1959),
fondatore dell’omonima fornace
muranese. Curata da Marino Barovier,
l’esposizione di oltre 300 pezzi
si concentra soprattutto sulle tecniche
messe a punto dagli anni 50, come
lo zanfirico, il mosaico tessuto, la
murrina e il vetro inciso. E sui tanti artisti
con cui Venini collaborò in quegli anni,
tra cui Tyra Lundgren, Gio Ponti, Pietro
Fornasetti, Riccardo Licata, Massimo

tra il 1419 e il 1445 è aperto al pubblico come Museo che racconta
i 600 anni di storia di questa istituzione, un tempo orfanotrofio,
oggi dedicata alla tutela e alla promozione della cultura dei diritti
dell’infanzia. Il progetto, realizzato dal team fiorentino Ipostudio
(vincitore di un concorso internazionale indetto nel 2008), propone
diverse novità: un sistema di ingressi su Piazza SS. Annunziata,
l’apertura al pubblico del piano seminterrato come parte del percorso
museale, la realizzazione di un nuovo sistema di collegamenti
verticali, il riallestimento della pinacoteca. E infine la restituzione
alla città – come caffetteria – del magnifico Verone, la grande loggia-

Vetro dedicates up to 8 January 2017
an exhibition to the extraordinary figure
of the Milanese entrepreneur Paolo
Venini (1895-1959), founder of the
homonymous Murano furnace. Curated
by Marino Barovier, the exhibition
of more than 300 pieces focuses mostly
on the tecniques studied from the
1950s, like zanfirico, “mosaico tessuto”
(woven mosaic), murrine and incised
glass. And on the many artists who
collaborated with him in those years,

to life the Spedale degli Innocenti. Finally open to the public

Starting from last June the famous palazzo built by Brunelleschi
between 1419 and 1445 reopened to the public as a Museum of
the 600 years of history of this Institution, once orphanage, today
dedicated to the promotion of a culture of children’s rights. The
project was carried out by the Florentine team at Ipostudio, which
won an international competition that was launched in 2008, and
offers several news: the entrance area on Piazza SS. Annunziata, the
opening of the basement level as part of the museum, the creation
of vertical connecting infrastructure, and the re-design of the
pinacoteca’s hanging system. A new venue is also the rededication
to the city as a café of the magnificent Verone, the great loggia-
drying area with splendid views over the rooftops of Florence

Stories of Italy are Matilde Antonacci and Dario

Buratto, a duo with a history in the world of fashion.
Last year they founded a studio that mixes design,
craftsmanship and art. They will do a performance
at the Camp Design Gallery in Milan on 5 October.
The event is part of the Prestidigitorium show,
an exhibition project that the innovative Milanese
gallery is dedicating to the ancient form of the vase
(through 11 November). The exhibition will also include
contemporary interpretations by Zaven, Dossofiorito
and Marcin Rusak.

le finestre. L’installazione che scuote le coscienze
e attira l’attenzione sul dramma dei migranti, è opera
dell’artista dissidente cinese Ai Weiwei, cui
la fondazione fiorentina dedica la prima grande
retrospettiva italiana, curata da Arturo Galansino.
Un percorso espositivo – tra sculture, oggetti,
fotografie e video degli ultimi vent’anni – che

Twenty-two orange rescue dinghies are anchored
(until 22 January) to two of the façades of Palazzo
Strozzi in Florence, framing the windows.
The installation, which stirs the conscience and draws
attention to the dramatic experiences of migrants,
is the work of the Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei,
to whom the Florentine foundation is dedicating Italy’s
first major retrospective, curated by Arturo Galansino.
An exhibition – which includes sculptures, objects,
photographs and videos from the past 20 years –
that shines a light on one of the most important figures
in contemporary art and political activism.

10,000 square metres in total – the Centro
per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato
strengthens the cultural offering to include
cinema, music, performing arts, architecture,
design, fashion and literature. The existing
structure, which was built by Italo Gamberini
in 1988, is now encircled by a new ring-shaped
volume designed by the dutch Maurice Nio.
At the ground floor – a glass structure – are
the visitor services, whilst the first floor,
dedicated to the exhibition of works, is bathed
in natural light also thanks to the Solatube
devices, caps that capture, transport and
deliver solar light. To mark its reopening, the
Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci
presents the exhibition The end of the world
with pieces by over 50 international artists.

all’apicultura, un vivaio, una passeggiata, una
postazione di pesca, una spiaggia, un’area barbecue e
una protetta per i bambini. È l’intervento paesaggistico
messo a punto dall’azienda di escavazione Nuova
Demi, che integra la struttura produttiva nel contesto
naturale e genera momenti di benessere per
i dipendenti e la comunità (a destra). Il progetto della
cava è il vincitore di The Green Company Award 2016,
premio ideato dal festival internazionale I maestri
del paesaggio di Bergamo, promosso da Confindustria

A photovoltaic park and an artificial lake with hides

for birdwatching, a unit devoted to beekeeping, a plant
nursery, a promenade, a fishing point, a beach, an area
for barbecues and a protected one for children. This
is the intervention of landscaping carried out by
the quarrying company Nuova Demi which integrates
the production facility into the natural context and
generates moments of wellbeing for its employees and
the community (above). The quarry project is the
winner of the Green Company Award 2016, a prize
instituted by the international festival I Maestri del
Paesaggio, promoted by Confindustria Bergamo and
supported in all its phases by Abitare (including the
jury), in which the focus is on good business practices
that enhance the environment and the territory. The
jury, chaired by the German landscape architect Stefan

è un tributo contemporaneo allo stile e alla storia marittima del luogo, ideato
dall’architetto Janus rostock (della multinazionale del progetto atkins) e grazie
alla sua eccezionale flessibilità può assumere la forma del teatro – adatto a grandi
produzioni (musical, balletti, conferenze e convegni con una capienza di oltre
2mila posti a seconda della configurazione) – o trasformarsi in una sala da
concerto (con una serie di torri e di riflettori sonori progettati per creare un guscio
acustico impeccabile intorno all’orchestra). il suo pavimento si può appiattire
per ospitare mostre d’arte o sfilate di moda. non mancano, sul tetto, un sontuoso

Shaped like a dhow, a traditional Arab sailing vessel, the new Dubai Opera House
opened this past August in the Opera District of the Middle Eastern city is a
contemporary tribute to the maritime lifestyle and history of the place. Designed
by the architect Janus Rostock (of the international firm Atkins) it has an
exceptional degree of flexibility so that it can be converted into a theatre, suitable
for large productions (musicals, ballets, conferences and conventions with room for
over 2,000 people depending on the configuration), but it can also transform into
a concert hall (with a series of towers and sound reflectors designed to create
an impeccable acoustic shell around the orchestra). Even the floor can be converted
to make it “flat” so that art exhibitions or fashion shows can be held. On the rooftop,
a restaurant and a garden with a view of The Dubai Fountain and the Burj Khalifa.

training to graphics, from the product to communication, from publishing to new
technologies. More than the Fuorisalone, the inspiration comes from Book City and
Piano City, milanese festivals recently developed to offer an overview of publishing
and music. A call launched by Studiolabo under the auspices of the Municipality
and with support from Abitare was able to elicit proposals (the complete programme

Per una casa a Torino, lo studio R3architetti ha realizzato
un dispositivo funzionale che rende anche lo spazio interessante
For a Turin house, R3architetti studio has designed a functional
device generating also an interesting space

Nel combinare un bilocale e un trilocale in un unico appartamento,
a Torino, lo studio R3architetti è partito da una netta separazione
tra zona giorno e notte. A dividere lo spazio è un prisma, un “argine”
che nasconde anche le funzioni più private della casa, dal bagno, alle
cabine armadio, dai ripostigli agli impianti (tra cui il condizionamento).
Sul fronte della zona notte il volume ha un tamponamento
in policarbonato alveolare che grazie alla sua semi-trasparenza
non opprime le due camere. Lo stesso volume appare invece in terra
cruda nella zona giorno, con un sapore “da esterno” più adatto alle
attività sociali della famiglia. La cucina è in cemento armato gettato
in opera e pannelli listellari di rovere, e il suo disegno in pianta dialoga
con l’argine. Una conformazione che ha permesso di ricavare
sul retro della cucina il bagno ospiti e la lavanderia, illuminata
da un lucernaio, e sul lato opposto un ambiente dispensa. (IG)
Combining a two-room and a three-room flats into a single apartment,
in Turin, the studio R3architetti started with a clear division between
the living and sleeping areas. The division of the space is made by
a prism, a “levee” that also conceals the more private parts of the
house, such as bathroom and walk-in wardrobe, cupboards as well as
heating and ventilation equipment. Along the sleeping area, the volume
is made of semi-transparent polycarbonate honeycomb panels. The
same volume appears covered instead in raw earth on the side of the
living area, which here becomes a sort of “external” space suitable for
the family’s social activities. The kitchen area is made of in-situ cast
concrete and oak blockboards. Its orientation interacts with the levee.
Thanks to this layout, behind the kitchen they were able to create
space for the guest bathroom and laundry room, both lit naturally
by the skylight, and a pantry area on the opposite side

una tavolozza interattiva in cui si può scegliere uno sfondo

Glen Keane, a long-time Disney animator and the
father of some of the most beloved cartoon characters
(from the Little Mermaid to Tarzan), describes the
feeling of trying the Tilt Brush, which is the new tool
for creatives that can be used thanks to the HTC Vive
headset. Once you put the headset on and take the two
controllers in your hands, you can select a background
and choose brushes and patterns. Then you can draw
in the air shapes existing only in the digital world.

La nuova sede della Corte penale internazionale dell’Aja,
dei danesi Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, fa proprio
il concetto di giustizia e trasparenza dell’istituzione che ospita.
Un valore aggiuntivo nella progettazione degli spazi interni,
realizzati con Rosan Bosch e Rune Fjord Jensen dello studio
danese Bosch & Fjord, ha riguardato il rispetto delle condizioni
di lavoro dei dipendenti (1200 postazioni) e in particolare
l’attenzione agli affacci e alla luce naturale. Il complesso,
che si estende su un’area di 46mila metri quadrati e la cui
realizzazione ha avuto un costo di 190 milioni di euro, prevede
sei torri, tra loro collegate ai piani terra e primo. (PM)

The new International Criminal Court in The Hague, design

Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, embodies the concepts
of justice and transparency that are central to the institution
it houses. An additional strength of the project are the
interiors, designed with studio Bosch & Fjord, who focused
on respecting the working conditions of employees (there are
1,200 workstations) and paid attention to views and natural
lighting. The complex, with six towers that are connected
to each other on the ground floor and first floor, covers an
area of 46,000 square metres and costed 190 million euros.

disparati. L’idea è di Sean Anderson e Arièle
Dionne-Krosnick, curatori del dipartimento di
architettura e design del museo newyorkese, e
scaturisce da un dato numerico sconvolgente,
offerto dalle Nazioni Unite: i profughi e i

MoMA. Located on the second floor of the
Dunn Gallery, the exhibition questions how
art, architecture and design have responded
to the issue by working in a range of scales
and mediums. The idea came to the curators
Sean Anderson and Arièle Dionne-Krosnick
after they learned of a shocking figure from
the United Nations: today there are more
than 67 million refugees and asylum seekers.

Da Beijing a Città del Messico, da Dubai a Taipei:
ottobre ha molto da offrire agli appassionati di design
La principale unità di misura per la nomina di una World Design
Capital valuta quanto una città utilizzi il design per innovare
politiche e pratiche nella gestione dell’economia, dei servizi
e della cultura. La capitale del 2016 è Taipei e quella del 2018
sarà Città del Messico. Entrambe utilizzano eventi articolati
e multidisciplinari come un forum internazionale e una design
week per coinvolgere e preparare gli operatori internazionali
del design. A Città del Messico (5-9 ottobre) una fiera e una
costellazione di mostre personali disseminate in musei della
metropoli avranno tra i temi conduttori il design messicano
contemporaneo e la Germania, scelta come paese ospite
della kermesse. A Taipei invece (13-30 ottobre) gli eventi di punta
saranno una conferenza internazionale su metodi e strumenti del
design thinking e un’esposizione sulle migliori esperienze locali
di design di prodotto a cura di Li Wei Lang. Dal 23 settembre al 7
ottobre si tiene la Beijing Design Week, la più importante in Asia:
con il tema Design 2020, questa edizione sarà composta di nove
sezioni che mettono in scena il risultato delle interazioni tra
creatività, design e industria. Le nuove geografie produttive sono
un territorio d’indagine della Dubai Design Week (24-29 ottobre)
che anche per questa edizione conferma il formato Abwab,
una mostra di padiglioni nazionali utilizzati per mostrare prodotti
e linee di ricerche di paesi limitrofi. Tra quelli invitati quest’anno
dal curatore Cyril Zammit ci sono l’Algeria, il Bahrain, l’Iraq
e la Palestina. Dubai punta a essere un nuovo snodo
internazionale anche per il design. Questa posizione è già stata
conquistata da Vienna che con la sua design week (30 settembre –
9 ottobre) taglia il traguardo dei dieci anni. Li festeggia
con un’edizione ricca di celebrazioni, mostre e i workshop

October can offer a lot to the design addicted
The principal unit of measure evaluated for the naming of a World
Design Capital examines how a city uses design to come up
with innovative policies and practices for the management
of the economy, public services and culture. The 2016 capital
is Taipei and the 2018 capital will be Mexico City. Both use
multi-component and multi-disciplinary events as an international
forum and a design week to attract and prepare the international
names in design. In Mexico City (5-9 October) a fair and a
constellation of solo exhibitions distributed throughout the
metropolis’ museums will have as their overarching themes
contemporary Mexican design and Germany, chosen as the guest
country for the big event. In Taipei on the other hand (13-30
October) the main events will be an international conference
on the methods and tools of design thinking, and an exhibition of
the best local experiences with product design curated by Li Wei
Lang. From September 23 to October 7 will take place the Beijing
Design Week, the biggest in Asia: with the theme of Design 2020,
this edition is composed of nine main sections and will display
the innovative achievements of integrative development among

Dubai aims to be a new international centre also for design.

Toward Participation as Critical Spatial Practice
advances new theories about the production, mapping
and manipulation of spaces and the, also political,
purpose of the architectural discipline. Miessen lashes
out against sterile and acritical participation, in which
anyone is invited to take part in terms that are vague
and do not lead to anything, proposing as an
alternative a “conflictual participation”, a pro-active
commitment where the individual dedicates himselve
to the cause at hand. The book revolves around
the concept of “crossbenching”, a practice borrowed
from the House of Lords in the UK where members
who are free of any party affiliation (crossbenchers)
make their own judgements about a wide array of
issues. In architecture too, according to the author,
only an external observer, without any self interest
can implement new spatial practices, applying
them on an urban and geopolitical scale

utilizzato da Werner Sobek, la sperimentazione estrema
dell’edificio di vetro di Sou Fujimoto, la scomparsa dei
confini tra interno e esterno, con lo sviluppo dell’abitazione
intorno a un albero, di De Vylder Vinck Taillieu, la casa
specchio di Johan Selbing e Anouk Vogel e quella acquario
di Wiel Arets. Progetti dove le limitazioni diventano spinta

Distese di colza, girasoli e grano saraceno.
Prati punteggiati di crisantemi, una specie perenne
a bassa manutenzione con magnifici fiori
da utilizzare anche come erba medica. Il Luming
Park inaugurato l’anno scorso a Quzhou – città
di due milioni e mezzo di abitanti nella provincia
occidentale di Zhejiang – è un polmone verde
di 32 ettari lungo le rive del fiume Shiliang, dove
per creare scenari sempre mutevoli e colorati
è stata impiegata l’agricoltura a rotazione.
L’inventore di questa sorta di impressionismo green
è Kongjian Yu, laureato a Harvard e fondatore
vent’anni fa di Turenscape (tu-ren, in cinese “terra-
uomo”), studio di progettazione di Pechino che
oggi conta più di 600 professionisti. Sulla salute
del nostro pianeta, la visione di Yu non è rosea.
Luming Park, which opened last year in Quzhou –
a city of two and a half million inhabitants in the
Western province of Zhejiang – is a 32-hectare
green lung on the banks of the Shiliang Creek,
where crop rotation has been used to create
colourful and constantly changing scenes. There
are expanses of rape, sunflowers and buckwheat;
meadows dotted with chrysanthemums, a low-
maintenance perennial with magnificent flowers
that can also be used as a medicinal herb.
The creator of this sort of “green Impressionism”
is Kongjian Yu, a Harvard graduate and founder
twenty years ago of Turenscape (tu-ren in Chinese
means earth-people), a design firm in Beijing that
today employs over 600 professionals. Yu’s view
of the health of our planet is not a rosy one.

al 70 per cento», afferma. Le soluzioni che
il paesaggista propone per far fronte a questa
situazione sono due: «Prima di tutto bisogna
rovesciare il paradigma e far sì che l’urbanizzazione
sia al servizio dell’infrastruttura ecologica,
e non viceversa. La progettazione deve integrare
la gestione delle acque, la conservazione di
biodiversità e di corridoi verdi», spiega. «Poi
è necessario tornare a una concezione antica
e vernacolare del paesaggio, basata
sull’agricoltura, capace di esprimere una nuova
relazione fra il territorio e i cittadini grazie
all’impiego di piante e materiali nativi, del luogo».
“We are on the edge of disaster. In China the water
table is sinking by a meter a year, water is in short
supply and 70 for cent of what we have is
polluted,” he declares. The designer proposes two
remedies for this situation. “First of all we must
turn the paradigm on its head and make sure that
urbanization is at the service of the ecological
infrastructure, and not the other way round. Design
has to integrate with the management of water,
the conservation of biodiversity and the creation of
green corridors,” he explains. “Then it is necessary
to go back to an old and vernacular conception
of the landscape, one based on agriculture and
capable of expressing a new relationship between
the territory and citizens through the use of native
plants and local materials.” Turenscape has

out urban spaces that are enjoyable and scenic but
have a minimal impact on nature (see, for example,

coloured bench winds its way through a wood of
native trees). They also specialise in reclaiming old
structures and integrating them into the landscape
(as with the shipyard in Zhongshan Park) and in
regenerating rivers by eliminating concrete edges
and using local plants for water purification and

“We have had enough of baroque gardens in the
style of old Europe. Modernity is created through
sustainable and beautiful agricultural parks.”

Da ex area industriale a nuovo polo di socialitˆ green
King’s Cross, ex area industriale abbandonata
da decenni, è destinata da qui al 2021 a ospitare
un nuovo polo urbano di 270mila metri quadrati.
Il grande cantiere, in piena attività, è stato studiato
in modo da non paralizzare la vita del quartiere
e i suoi spazi pubblici, che rappresentano il 40
per cento dell’area totale e sono in gran parte già
oggi aperti al pubblico, quindi pronti ben prima
degli edifici. «La committenza (King’s Cross Central
Limited Partnership, ndr) ritiene che il sentimento
di appropriazione del luogo da parte dei cittadini
sia un buon termometro della riuscita dell’operazione
nel suo complesso», spiega il team di Townshend
Landscape Architects, insieme a Allies and Morrison
e Porphyrios Associates alla guida di questa
avventura urbana e paesaggistica in cui sono stati
coinvolti vari gruppi di architetti e paesaggisti.
«Uno schema simile era già stato sperimentato
a Birmingham con esito positivo. Ora lo si ripropone
nel centro di Londra». Il cuore di King’s Cross
è Granary Square, la piazza disegnata proprio
dal gruppo di Robert Townshend, animata da mille

King’s Cross, a former industrial area that has been
disused for decades, is destined between now and
2021 to become the location of a new urban centre
covering some 270,000 square metres. The giant
construction site, in full swing, has been set up in
such a way as not to bring life to a stop in the district
and its public spaces, which make up 40 per cent
of the total area, are to a great extent already open
and accessible today, and thus ready long before
many of the buildings. For the team at Townshend
Landscape Architects, who are responsible with
Allies and Morrison and Porphyrios Associates for
the coordination of this adventure in urban planning
and landscaping in which various groups of architects
and landscape designers have been involved,
“The client (King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership,
editor’s note) believes that the feeling of possession
of the place on the part of citizens is a good indicator
of the success of the overall operation”. “The client”,
they continue, “had previously developed similar
schemes in Birmingham. […] This successful strategy
was used at [King’s Cross] and is relatively unique
to developments within London.” The heart of King’s
Cross is Granary Square, laid out by Robert

As the Townshend team argue “Throughout the site
[we] have incorporated playable landscape elements
in a site-wide strategy, […] such as the fountains
at Granary Square to splash and play in. […] To date
a playground has been delivered as part of Handyside
Gardens, designed in collaboration with Dan
Pearson.” Situated on the bed of former railway
sidings and squeezed between a new residential
building and a shed once used for the repair of trains,
and now home to a cooking school, Handyside
Gardens plays with the memory of the place’s original
use. It uses raised and sinuous beds, bordered
with plates of COR-TEN steel as seen in the railway
industry at the beginning of the century, and these

Per chi desidera visitare una riserva naturale
in piena città c’è Camley Street Natural Park,
situata sulle sponde del Regent’s Canal, dove

dai giovani architetti finlandesi Erkko Aarti,
Arto Ollila e Mikki Ristola, consente di osservare
da vicino i pesci, gli uccelli acquatici, la varietà

Ristola, allows people to observe from close-up

The Skip Garden è invece un orto-giardino mobile
dalla vocazione didattica creato con il contributo
corale della comunità. Fiori selvatici, ortaggi,
erbe aromatiche, arnie e pollai popolano questo
insolito luogo realizzato con materiali riciclati,
dove è possibile gustare pietanze preparate
con materie prime a chilometro zero. Il progetto
è gestito da Global Generation, un’organizzazione
di beneficenza che avvicina i giovani alle
pratiche ecologiche. Qui la sostenibilità sociale
e ambientale viaggiano insieme, così come
attraverso tutto il resto degli spazi pubblici
di King’s Cross, a dimostrazione del fatto che
la convivenza fra ambiente costruito e paesaggio
naturale è possibile e auspicabile anche
nel cuore di una delle metropoli più popolate
del continente europeo.

Wild flowers, vegetables, aromatic herbs, beehives
and hen houses make up this unusual place created
out of recycled materials where it is possible
to taste dishes prepared with ingredients that
have zero food miles. The project is run by Global
Generation, a charity that aims to introduce
the young to environmentally friendly practices.
Here social and environmental sustainability go
hand in hand, as they do across all the public spaces
in King’s Cross, and this all goes to show that
the coexistence of built-up areas and a natural
landscape is possible and desirable even in the
heart of one of the biggest cities in Europe

parte definire così, e date le premesse più immediate
da cui muove, non poteva essere altrimenti.
Promosso dal governo centrale e progettato in stretta
collaborazione con le amministrazioni locali, TR030
fa parte di un programma che investe tutte
le maggiori città albanesi, ma che in Tirana trova forse
la cartina di tornasole più sensibile: una regione
che, dopo la caduta del regime comunista di Enver
Hoxha nel 1991, ha vissuto un decennio di caos
istituzionale e urbanistico in cui l’affermazione
di un “ritrovato” diritto alla proprietà privata si è
tradotto sostanzialmente in una sregolata rincorsa
alla costruzione e dilapidazione di grandi (e anche
interstiziali) porzioni di territorio. Per quanto
Edi Rama, ex sindaco di Tirana dal 2000 al 2011
(e attuale Primo Ministro albanese dopo le elezioni
politiche del 2013), abbia cercato di arginarne
gli effetti, mettendo in atto puntuali interventi
di riassetto del suolo e recupero di spazio pubblico,
l’espansione edilizia ha tuttavia continuato
a tracimare nei comuni limitrofi. Ciò anche a causa
di un punto debole, strutturale, che è stato
individuato nell’assenza di un’autorità di governo
metropolitano. La riforma amministrativa del 2014
può aver colmato quell’assenza, e da qui si
è ripartiti con un’altra cornice (e questioni): i nuovi
confini di Tirana ne hanno infatti espanso il territorio

The “vision” for the future of Tirana from now until
2030 (TR030) proposed by the group made up
of Stefano Boeri Architetti, UNLAB and IND, winners
of an international competition, could in large part be
defined as a plan for the recovery of the landscape.
And, given the most immediate premises on which
this plan is based, it could not have been otherwise.
Promoted by central government and drawn up in
close collaboration with local administrations, TR030
is part of a programme that affects all of Albania’s
main cities, but which will perhaps be put to its most
sensitive litmus test in Tirana: a region that, after the
fall of Enver Hoxha’s communist regime in 1991, went
through a decade of institutional and planning chaos in
which the assertion of a “rediscovered” right to private
property essentially took the form of a disorderly
rush to build and the squandering of large (and even
interstitial) portions of territory. Despite the efforts
of Edi Rama, mayor of Tirana from 2000 to 2011
(and the current prime minister of Albania following
the elections of 2013), to curb its effects by carrying
out precise interventions to reorganize land use
and recover public space, this expansion of building
has continued, spilling over into neighbouring
municipalities. This is partly due to what has been
identified as a structural weakness, the absence of
a metropolitan authority. The administrative reforms
of 2014 may have succeeded in filling that gap,
and it is from here that the process has got under way
once again within another framework (and with other
questions). The new boundaries of Tirana have in fact
expanded its territory by a factor of twenty-five,

estremamente differenti, polarizzando la caotica
densità della città consolidata con aree peri-urbane
scarsamente popolate, assorbendo centri satellite
con specifiche potenzialità. Una “città
caleidoscopica” che, tuttavia, potrebbe contare
oggi su un nuovo strumento per una sua gestione
possibilmente coordinata e di più ampio respiro.
TR030 si compone di tre contenitori: un Affresco
metropolitano fondato su dieci grandi temi
(biodiversità, policentrismo, sapere diffuso, mobilità,
acqua, geopolitica, turismo, accessibilità,
agricoltura, energia); un Atlante composto da tredici
progetti strategici concretamente collocati nel
territorio; una Carta di regole elaborate intorno a
cinque sistemi metabolici (natura, infrastruttura,
città, agricoltura, acqua). «La strategia principale –
spiega Stefano Boeri – propone un necessario
e non più prorogabile contenimento del consumo
di suolo, la discontinuità nel tessuto urbano,
la frammentazione dell’edificato, eventualmente
lo sfruttamento di una certa verticalità per liberare
terreno ulteriore. Tirana è una città con altezze
medie non elevate, ma una densità tra le maggiori
d’Europa, come se fosse stata compressa
sacrificando tutti gli spazi aperti». Far leva sul vuoto
per generare spazio pubblico, dunque, e altrettanto
sulla natura e sull’agricoltura per assorbire
le diversità e complessità interne ai nuovi confini
urbani. Tale rapporto con la natura è un tema
che prevede diverse strategie: un sistema boschivo
orbitale continuo intorno alla metropoli, inclusivo

as absorbing satellite towns with specific potentialities.
This is a kind of “kaleidoscopic city” that, however,
can now rely on a new instrument which may permit
more coordinated and comprehensive management.
TR030 is made up of three containers: a metropolitan
Fresco based on ten major themes (biodiversity,
polycentrism, diffuse knowledge, mobility, water,
geopolitics, tourism, accessibility, agriculture and
energy); an Atlas composed of thirteen strategic
projects located in the real landscape and a Chart
of rules formulated around five metabolic systems
(nature, infrastructure, city, agriculture, water).
As Stefano Boeri puts it, “The main strategy is for
a necessary and no longer deferrable containment
of the conversion of farmland to other uses, with
discontinuity in the urban fabric and fragmentation
of the built-up area, with the possibility of building
a little higher in order to free up more land. Tirana
is a city in which the average height of the buildings is
not particularly great, but it is also one of the densest
in Europe. It is as if the city has been compressed,
and has lost all its open spaces.” This is a strategy,
therefore, which relies on the creation of gaps
to generate public space, as well as on nature and
farming to absorb the diversity and complexity within
the new city limits. The relationship with nature is a
theme that envisages various strategies: a continuous
ring of woodland around the metropolis, including
parks and protected nature reserves that will preserve

e alimentino la biodiversità esistente; nuovi corridoi
ecologici lungo i fiumi Lana, Tirana ed Erzeni; un anello
verde di circonvallazione (nuovo 4° ring), baricentrico
rispetto alla grande Tirana, come spazio pubblico
lineare e di mobilità di raccordo; il rilancio dei centri
minori come network diffuso di poli turistici, agricoli
e produttivi in comunicazione tra loro e con l’area
urbana. Ed è, quest’ultimo punto, parte integrante
di un altro grande tema, di notevole rilevanza per
il decongestionamento della città oltre a questioni
urgentissime come la mobilità (con una popolazione
raddoppiata nel giro di dieci anni e una crescita
esponenziale degli autoveicoli privati) e l’accessibilità
(in una città cresciuta senza regole in cui talvolta
mancano anche i marciapiedi): quello di Tirana come
città policentrica. Anche il policentrismo si sviluppa
in diversi modi: a una scala maggiore, prevede cinque
nuove aree produttive metropolitane all’esterno
della città come epicentri per la cultura, i servizi
ai cittadini, il tempo libero. Ma soprattutto, come ogni

and boost the existing biodiversity; new environmental
corridors along the Lanë, Tiranë and Erzen rivers;
a green belt (the new 4th ring-road) around the centre
of Greater Tirana, serving as a linear public space
and link for the transport system. A further aspect will
be the revival of minor towns as a distributed network
of centres for tourism, agriculture and production
that will be in communication with one another and
with the urban area. This last point is an integral part
of another major theme, one that is of considerable
significance for the decongestion of the city – in
addition to such pressing questions as mobility (with
a population that has doubled in the space of ten years
and an exponential growth in the number of private
vehicles) and accessibility (in a city that has grown
without rules and where sometimes even pavements
are lacking) – that of Tirana as a polycentric city.
This polycentrism is also being developed in different
ways: on a larger scale, with the planning of five new
metropolitan areas for production outside the city
to serve as centres for culture, public services and

da un’eccessiva ipermetropia, anche qui un doppio
livello metodologico fa interagire una teoria di grandi
campi e vettori con altre modalità, più empiriche
se si vuole, dove interventi puntiformi scommettono
sulla rigenerazione del tessuto esistente dall’interno,
per propagazione capillare alla scala del quartiere:
ed è il “sapere diffuso”. Si tratta di venti nuove
scuole, affacciate su spazi aperti (dietro cui edifici più
alti possano creare valore come volani finanziari)
intorno alle quali recuperare ulteriori spazi esterni
e definire una nuova immagine di città pubblica
e inclusiva. È evidente che la nozione di paesaggio
che TR030 suggerisce è, correttamente, ampia:
culturale, sociale, anche geopolitica (e perfino
interreligiosa). In una sua specifica misura, Tirana
è infatti un palinsesto geopolitico del Novecento,
il cui epicentro storico è l’asse centrale della città:
viale monumentale, nato con il piano regolatore
del 1925 di Armando Brasini, che attraversa la città
da nord a sud spezzandone il radiocentrismo.
Su questo impianto già interessato da notevoli
leisure. But above all, as with any urban vision on
a grand scale that is not affected by excessive
long-sightedness, here too a dual level of methodology
brings together the idea of large fields and vectors
that interact with other modalities, more empirical
ones, in which tightly focused interventions are used
to promote a regeneration of the existing fabric from
within. All this is in the hope that this will lead to
“diffuse knowledge” at a district level. This will require
the construction of twenty new schools, facing onto
open spaces (behind which taller buildings can create
value as financial engines) around which to recover
further outdoor spaces and define a new image for
a public and inclusive city. It is evident that the notion
of landscape that TR030 suggests is a broad one:
at the same time cultural, social and geopolitical (and
even interreligious). In its own specific way, Tirana is
in fact a geopolitical palimpsest of the 20th century,
whose historical epicentre is the central axis of the
city: a monumental avenue, created with Armando
Brasini’s town plan of 1925, that runs through the city
from north to south, breaking up its radial structure.

Skanderbeg o la grande estensione del boulevard
da parte di Grimshaw Architects, sono introdotti
spazi verdi ulteriori, una parziale pedonalizzazione
e nuovi progetti: il più importante dei quali è il Parco
del Mondo, una nuova piazza quadrata destinata
ad accogliere tutte le ambasciate, proprio
a sottolineare, e consolidare, la dimensione geopolitica
della città in una sorta di allegoria tridimensionale.
E, forse, anche per questo il termine “affresco” – tra
i tre contenitori citati – è rappresentativo dello spirito
con cui il piano è stato composto. Non solo
per lo humour con cui si riferisce al ciclo trecentesco
di Ambrogio Lorenzetti (un divertito omaggio
alla passione per la pittura del primo ministro
albanese), ma perché anch’esso, e forse
necessariamente dato il tempo concesso alla sua
redazione, ha la forma di una grande allegoria,
di cui sarà interessante monitorare la trasformazione
in processo reale, cioè in un vero e proprio piano
di sviluppo strategico della capitale albanese e della
sua area metropolitana per i prossimi quindici anni.
It introduces into this layout – which has already
seen some major interventions, like 51N4E’s project
for Skanderbeg Square or the long extension of the
boulevard by Grimshaw Architects – additional open
spaces, a partial pedestrianization and new projects.
The most important of these will be the Park
of the World, a new quadrangular square destined
to accommodate all the embassies, underlining, and
consolidating, the geopolitical dimension of the city
in a sort of three-dimensional allegory. And, perhaps,
for this reason too the term “fresco” – among the
three containers mentioned – is representative of the
spirit with which the plan has been drawn up. Not just
for its humorous reference to Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s
14th-century cycle (which is also an amused tribute
to the Albanian prime minister’s passion for painting),
but also because it, perhaps necessarily given the time
granted for its drawing up, takes the form of a grand
allegory. It will be interesting to see the way this
plan becomes a real process, i.e. a true plan for the
strategic development for the Albanian capital
and its metropolitan area over the next fifteen years

In Spagna, la città andalusa di Cordova è stata
due volte riconosciuta Patrimonio dell’Umanità
Unesco: nel 1994 per la vastità e il valore del
centro storico connotato dalla celebre Mezquita,
nel 2012 per la peculiarità antropologica e sociale
della “vita di patio”, sancita Patrimonio
Immateriale per le virtuose consuetudini di
condivisione e convivenza che tradizionalmente
promuove. In questo contesto è nato il Progetto
PAX, diretto per conto del Comune di Cordova
dall’architetto milanese Gaia Redaelli, a capo
di un gruppo multidisciplinare composto da
urbanisti, architetti, geografi e antropologi. «Scopo

as a World Heritage Site: in 1994 for the sheer size
and outstanding value of its historic centre with
the celebrated Mezquita, and in 2012 for the
anthropological and social value of its “patio life”,
which was added to the list of Intangible Heritage
sites for the virtuous sharing and neighbourliness
this promotes. It is in this context that the
PAX Project was set up for Cordoba City
Council by Milanese architect Gaia Redaelli,
who heads a multi-disciplinary group made
up of urban planners, architects, geographers
and anthropologists.

di circa dieci gradi, grazie all’uso tradizionale

As she argues, “the purpose of this project is to
regenerate the historic centres of Mediterranean
cities, which can be made sustainable through
typological and constructional features, and
increasing population density so as to avoid tourist
gentrification and over-exploitation of space,
as well as through a joint action by public bodies
and the social economy”. “PAX takes on particular
relevance in Spain, which has been damaged over
the last two decades by a property bubble that has
pushed residents out of historic centres and
into new housing, resulting in paradoxically high
numbers of empty homes, with evictions taking
place on a daily basis.” An exemplary case
of Mediterranean urban planning of Arab origin,
the Axerquía Norte area on which the PAX project
focuses is marked by the minutely structured,
highly porous fabric of the patio houses, where
six to eight homes are designed around an inner
courtyard measuring five metres by five. Thanks to

In the mining centre of Nebida, Roberto Zancan’s group has conceived a kind of choreographic action which aims to transform places through the movement of bodies.
Landworks-Sardina è un esercizio di formazione
operativa, una scuola istantanea, volta a educare
i partecipanti per mezzo della realizzazione
collettiva d’interventi nel Parco Geominerario
della Sardegna. Qui da oltre sei anni, Stefan
Tischer, Paola Serrittu e Annacaterina Piras
organizzano un insieme di azioni paesaggistiche
collettive sotto la direzione di noti paesaggisti,
come Pedro Camarena, Marc Puzol, Thilo Folkers,
Walter J. Hood, Carlo Scoccianti, Henry Bava,
Lorenzo Brusci, Gabriella Trovato, Sue Anne Ware,
Craig Verzone. L’iniziativa s’ispira a quella
tradizione di azioni di riqualificazione degli spazi
urbani che ha dato vita, grazie ad Arnold Bode
e Hermann Mattern, anche alla stessa Documenta.

Landworks-Sardinia is an exercise in on-the-job
training, an instantaneous school that aims
to educate its participants by means of the joint
realization of projects in Sardinia’s Geomineral Park.
Here over a period of more than six years, Stefan
Tischer, Paola Serrittu and Annacaterina Piras have
organized a range of collective landscaping actions
under the guidance of well-known designers like
Pedro Camarena, Marc Puzol, Thilo Folkers, Walter
J. Hood, Carlo Scoccianti, Henry Bava, Lorenzo
Brusci, Gabriella Trovato, Sue Anne Ware and Craig
Verzone. The initiative is inspired by that tradition
of actions for the upgrading of urban spaces that
gave rise, thanks to Arnold Bode and Hermann
Mattern, to Documenta. In other words the famous
German horticulture show – the Bundesgartenschau –
that played a crucial role in the reconstruction
of post-war Germany. Making reference to the direct

diretta delle pratiche del giardinaggio, i Landworks
definiscono la loro peculiare dimensione
non progettando i luoghi, ma agendovi senza
l’intermediazione di un disegno preliminare.
L’intento è lontano dalle prospettive dell’auto-
costruzione e va nella direzione di creare un metodo
pedagogico che renda consapevoli i giovani
talenti della forza e dalla capacità della loro azione
diretta, della possibilità di apprendere e impiegare
tecniche artigianali e del giardinaggio per imparare
a diventare operatori ambientali stando
all’aperto, liberi dall’alienazione del “caddismo”
al computer. Partendo dall’idea che il territorio
è l’esito di un grande deposito di fatiche, queste
fatiche sono impiegate per sistemare “quel che
define their distinctive dimension not by designing
places, but by acting on them without the
intermediation of a preliminary plan. The intent here
is quite different from that of self-construction.
Rather it is a move in the direction of developing
a teaching method that will make young talents
aware of the power and capacity of forms of direct
action, and of the possibility of acquiring
and employing craft and gardening techniques
in order to learn how to work on the environment
in the open, freed from the alienation that stems
from the reliance on computer-aided drafting.
Starting from the idea that the land is the product
of a long series of labours, these efforts are employed
to adjust “what is there”. The materials of the

gli scarti e sono lasciati i luoghi ha l’intento
di far scoprire i siti, di riconoscerne e rafforzarne
la dimensione ambientale e la biodiversità
o anche solo di mostrare quel che si può fare
con ciò che, alle popolazioni locali e ai turisti,
pare solo una rovina e un mucchio d’immondizie.
Nell’ultima edizione i lavori si sono concentrati
in due luoghi nell’iglesiente. A Nebida, un centro
minerario dalla straordinaria orografia, connotato
dallo spettacolare manufatto della Laveria
Lamarmora, il gruppo guidato da Roberto Zancan
si è dedicato al performative landscape, ovvero
interventions are local objets trouvés, that are
sometimes moved a few kilometres but tend to come
from a similar context. A large part of this type
of work consists in cleaning and arranging.
The intention behind the way in which the waste
is reutilized and places are changed is to get people
to discover the sites, and to recognize and reinforce
an environmental dimension and a sense of
biodiversity, or even just to show what can be done
with something hat looks, to many local people and
tourists, like a ruin or a heap of rubbish. At the most
recent Landworks the focus has been on two sites
in the region of Iglesias. At Nebida, a mining centre
with extraordinary terrain, characterized by the
spectacular structure of the Laveria Lamarmora,
Roberto Zancan’s group has devoted its attention to
the performative landscape, a kind of choreographic

Sicilian town in the province of Agrigento back to life. So much so that this place has become a setting

C’è un carattere fiabesco nel Farm Cultural Park
di Favara, una sorta di micro paesaggio urbano
che non racconta esattamente il processo urbano
che l’ha prodotta, che non sottolinea valori
architettonici quali la sostenibilità o il corretto
uso dell’energia e che non mette in scena
una qualche forma di rivendicazione o di “rinascita”
di un luogo critico della provincia siciliana.
È un carattere antipolemico e pure non evasivo,
che non si pone con alterigia rispetto all’intorno,
né come modello o come esempio.
Semplicemente, la Farm Cultural Park è apparsa
nelle concrezioni materiali di un luogo che fatica
a immaginare il suo futuro e, a questo luogo,
racconta una favola. I muri bianchi – una sorta
di canvas che, ricorsivamente, si arricchisce
There is a fairy-tale character to the Farm Cultural Park
in Favara, a sort of micro urban landscape that is not
an exact reflection of the process of urbanization that
has produced it, not does it emphasize architectural
values like sustainability or the correct use of energy
or stage-manage any kind of claim to be leading to
a “renaissance” of a crucial site in the province of Sicily.
There is nothing polemical about this place and yet
it is, also, not evasive. It does not adopt an arrogant
attitude towards its surroundings, either as a model
or as an example. Quite simply, the Farm Cultural Park
has appeared as a material addition to a place that
is finding it hard to imagine its future and it is spinning
this place a yarn. The white walls – a sort of canvas
that, recursively, enriches and stratifies the works
of the artists in residence – reproduce and anticipate

e stratifica le opere degli artisti residenti – riproducono
e anticipano quell’effetto straniante tipico dell’arte,
quella materialità con cui sono costruite le case
delle fiabe senza particolari evidenze tettoniche,
senza dettagli, senza tecnicismi.
L’intervento di Laps Architecture e Castelli Studio
ha concretizzato un materiale onirico in una
struttura urbana esausta, demolendo, accorpando,
riducendo, semplificando le tipologie esistenti,
utilizzando gli spazi inabitati in modo caricaturale,
che infine traduce l’intento del progetto in uno
spazio irriducibile all’esistente se pure l’esistente –
il tessuto urbano poroso del centro storico di Favara,
a pochi chilometri da Agrigento – ha guardato
da subito con curiosità e partecipazione a questa
favola raccontata con la materia architettonica.

a disconcerting effect typical of art. The materiality
with which the fairy-tale houses are constructed
is one without particular tectonic features, without
details, without technicalities. The work of Laps
Architecture and Castelli Studio has given concrete
form to a dreamlike material in a derelict urban
structure. The project has demolished, , amalgamated,
reduced and simplified existing types of buildings and
used the uninhabited spaces in a caricatural way.
And in the end this sees the project become a space
that cannot be reduced to the existing, even
though the existing – the porous urban fabric of the
historic centre of Favara, a few kilometres from
Agrigento – has immediately shown curiosity about
and a sense of participation in this tale told with
architectural material. In describing it as having

un’identità specifica e di “invenzione”, una tensione
alla sospensione del reale, alla messa in gioco
di una visione che – sarebbe da considerare con
attenzione – viene da una forma di esilio volontario:
sia i committenti che gli architetti hanno infatti
con l’Italia un rapporto che è insieme di distacco
e di lucida attenzione. Essi, gravitando all’estero
e avendo origini locali, hanno proiettato
in questo intervento quella incertezza e quella
ingenuità che oggi sembrano rare nell’architettura
italiana. Il tutto si traduce in una sensazione
di libertà disinvolta ma non incontrollata, di agilità
di pensiero, di soluzioni che tendono sempre
alla maggiore semplicità possibile, sia tecnicamente
che esteticamente. La scelta dei curatori
del Padiglione Italia della 15. Biennale di Architettura

a fairy-tale character it is not my intention to play down
the significance of the project. Rather it is to indicate
a specific identity to the “invention”, a tendency
towards a kind of suspension of reality, to the bringing
into play of a vision that – and this is worthy of careful
consideration – comes from a form of voluntary exile.
Both the clients and the architects, in fact, have
a relationship with Italy that is a mix of detachment
and lucid attention. Gravitating towards foreign parts
but with local origins, they have put into this
intervention an uncertainty and an ingenuousness that
is something of a rarity in the world of Italian
architecture. All this translates into a sensation
of uninhibited but not uncontrolled freedom,
of nimbleness of thought, of solutions that always aim
for the greatest possible simplicity, from a technical
as well as an aesthetic perspective.

The inhabitants of Favara and the artists who have collaborated on the project constitute a new, sustainable community, the fruit of an authentic and visionary integration.

carattere saliente. Un trattamento da “architettura
sociale” rischierebbe infatti di limitare la portata
reale di questo intervento che è piuttosto qualcosa
di meno e qualcosa di più di una riflessione sul
bene comune. Qualcosa di meno per il carattere
prima sottolineato di un’architettura che si identifica
in una sorta di serenità materializzata, senza enfasi,
senza celebrazioni di sé stessa o di un qualche
ruolo salvifico che, attraverso la materia urbana,
si può estendere alla società. Ma c’è anche qualcosa

Sappiamo anche che le favole sono piene di insidie
e di trabocchetti, di doppi sensi, che possono
essere consolatorie o scatenare timore, calarci
sicuri nel mondo o prepararci al peggio.
E che il loro senso va continuamente elaborato,
messo alla prova e raccontato ogni volta
come se fosse la prima. Il senso di “palinsesto”
di questa architettura, proprio come l’architettura

of accepting its possible failure and treating it,
in any case, as a hypothesis worth pursuing.
We know too that fairy-tales are filled with perils
and pitfalls, with double meanings that can be
consolatory or trigger fear, that can make us feel safe
in the world or prepare us for the worst. The meaning
of these tales is continually reworked and put
to the test, and they are told every time as if it were
the first. The sense of this architecture as
a “palimpsest”, just like the architecture of a fairy-tale,
lies in the relationship between its simple structure
and the modes of interpretation to which it will be
subjected over time

A VIRTUOUS MODEL
Favara is a small Sicilian town
8 kilometres from the
UNESCO World Heritage site
of the Valley of the Temples
in Agrigento. In 2010 the
public notary Andrea Bartoli
and his wife, the lawyer
Florinda Saieva, had the idea
of reviving this run-down place
by creating the first cultural
tourism park in Sicily. Thanks
to the contribution of various
designers and artists,
a portion of the kasbah next
to the historic centre has
been transformed by thinning
out the barriers formed by
walls and creating new open
spaces and clear paths,
flooded now with natural light.
The white façades that give
it a sense of unity are used by
the artists as canvases, and
are renewed every six months.
The facilities and activities
present in the complex include
a contemporary art gallery,
refreshment areas, urban
farming, and residences for
artists, co-working spaces, a
garden and spaces for events
and seminars. The Farm
Cultural Park has turned out
to be a model of regional
marketing and has led to the
revival of Favara and the
surrounding area.

Dal 2010 al 2015 ho vissuto a Madrid. In quel
periodo ho assistito alla mobilitazione pacifica
chiamata 15 M, che ha sancito l’inizio del
Movimiento de los indignados. Per settimane
Plaza del Sol, occupata dai cittadini, è stata centro
rappresentativo riconquistato dagli abitanti.
È stata l’occasione per avvicinarsi ai temi della
riappropriazione urbana, in quel caso caratterizzata
da un alto valore politico, economico e di protesta
(civica). Attraverso quell’esperienza ho compreso
che gli architetti rappresentano una percentuale
minima tra coloro che si occupano di riattivazione
e ho iniziato a fare ricerche sul campo.
Parte di questo personale percorso è racchiuso
nelle pagine di Re-Act, Tools for Urban Re-
Activation (2016, Deleyva Editore), che raccoglie
best practices, riflessioni e interviste ad alcuni
Between 2010 and 2015 I lived in Madrid. In that
period I witnessed the peace movement known as
15 M, which marked the beginning of the so-called
Movimiento de Los Indignados. For weeks, Plaza del
Sol was occupied by the people of the city, and that
square came to symbolise the population’s efforts
to regain control of their city. This was also an
opportunity for me to approach issues surrounding
urban re-appropriation, which in this case was
marked by strong political, economic and civil
protest values. Through this experience I learned
that architects made up a very small percentage
of those involved in re-activation, so I began to
investigate the matter further. Part of this personal
journey of mine is described in Re-Act, Tools for
Urban Re-Activation (2016, Deleyva Editore), a book
that brings together best practices, reflections and

esperti su questi temi. Ri-uso, ri-generazione,
ri-attivazione sono parole chiave di un nuovo
vocabolario multi-disciplinare. Fanno parte
del linguaggio comune utilizzato da architetti,
rappresentanti delle pubbliche amministrazioni,
attori dello spazio urbano in genere e cittadini.
Si parla (e si discute molto) di rigenerazione
di edifici dismessi che ospitano start-up
innovative o gruppi di artisti, di piazze anonime
che diventano simbolo di riappropriazione
dello spazio urbano da parte della cittadinanza,
di luoghi periferici che accolgono l’espressione
di collettivi organizzati attraverso azioni puntuali,
e dal forte significato politico e sociale.
Queste parole diventano strumenti per leggere,
analizzare, interpretare un contesto: nuove
economie, politiche innovative, anticipazione,
modello sociale, tempo, partecipazione, scambio.
Concetti che accomunano esperienze di
riattivazione urbana a scala europea che, a loro
volta, introducono modelli per comprendere
e ripensare la città.
A Rotterdam, per esempio, si parla di economia
circolare e metabolismo urbano anche attraverso
RotterZwam, start-up innovativa ideata da Siemen
Cox e Mark Slegers, che ha ottenuto in
concessione un centro balneare abbandonato,
trasformandolo in laboratorio per coltivare funghi
commestibili dai fondi di caffè inutilizzati. Siemen
e Mark non sono architetti, ma sono diventati
protagonisti di un progetto di riattivazione di
un intero quartiere. Berlino accoglie il famoso
Prinzessinnengarten, uno dei più interessanti orti
urbani europei, ideato e gestito da Marco Clausen
nel 2009, con l’aiuto di un vasto gruppo di attivisti.
Bratislava ci insegna invece che non tutti i progetti
di partecipazione hanno necessariamente un
lieto fine. Pod Pyramidou è un giardino collettivo
situato sul tetto dell’edificio che ospita la Slovak
Radio, emittente nazionale. Il progetto, concepito
da una collaborazione tra le associazioni Jedlé
Mesto e Na Streche, ha coinvolto oltre 150
volontari e 18mila visitatori in oltre 50 iniziative
pubbliche realizzate in circa due anni. Ma
nonostante l’esito positivo dell’esperimento,
la terrazza è stata reclamata dai legittimi proprietari,

interviews with various experts in the field.
Re-use, re-generation and re-activation are key
terms in a new multi-disciplinary vocabulary.
They are part of the common language used by
architects, representatives of public administrative
bodies and other people who play a part in the
definition of urban space and citizens. There is a lot
of talk (and argument) about regenerating disused
buildings used as locations for innovative start-up
projects or groups of artists, unremarkable squares
that become the symbol of re-appropriation of the
urban space by the people of the city and suburban
areas that become the setting for collectives
organised through specifically targeted actions,
with a powerful political and social message. These
words then become the tools with which to read,
analyse and interpret a context: new economies,
innovative policies, anticipation, social model, time,
engagement and exchange. These are concepts
shared by urban re-activation experiences across
Europe scale which, in turn, introduce models that
can be used to understand and rethink the city.
In Rotterdam, for example, people are talking
about the circular economy and urban metabolism
through RotterZwam, an innovative start-up
devised by Siemen Cox and Mark Slegers, who
were granted use of an abandoned swimming pool
complex and turned it into a workshop for growing
edible mushrooms from unused coffee grounds.
Siemen and Mark are not architects but have
become protagonists in a re-activation project
involving an entire neighbourhood. Berlin is home
to the famous Prinzessinnengarten, one of Europe’s
most interesting city allotment schemes, devised
and run by Marco Clausen in 2009 with the help
of a large group of activists. Not all participation
projects have a happy ending, though, as the
experience of Bratislava demonstrates. Pod
Pyramidou was a collective garden situated on
the roof of the building housing state broadcaster
Slovak Radio. The project, based on collaboration
between the Jedlé Mesto and Na Streche
associations, involved over 150 volunteers
and attracted 18,000 visitors in over 50 public
initiatives over about two years. But despite
the success of the experiment, the terrace was
reclaimed by its rightful owners, who imposed

concrete. Il Luchtsingel, ancora a Rotterdam,
è un ponte parzialmente costruito grazie a
un’operazione di crowdfunding e pensato per
collegare diverse aree di uno stesso quartiere.
A esso è legato lo Schieblok, edificio che
ospita ZUS (Zones Urbaines Sensibles) studio
di progettazione che ne ha gestito la riattivazione
dai primi anni del Duemila, dapprima
occupandolo, poi convertendolo in hub che
ospita designers, video makers, artisti e architetti.
Anche Madrid è da sempre realtà attiva, grazie
alle diverse comunità di cittadini che realizzano
progetti auto-gestiti. Il Campo de Cebada e la
Tabacalera rappresentano due delle tante buone
pratiche attive nella capitale spagnola e di recente
sono state inserite all’interno de Los Madriles,
mappa della città che racconta il potenziale
inestimabile di questi movimenti indipendenti.
La “città informale”, come definita dagli autori,
raccoglie oltre 100 iniziative promosse
dai cittadini: dalla pulizia delle strade alla
segnalazione delle “vie tranquille”, che indicano
percorsi alternativi per i ciclisti, orti urbani,
e spazi riconquistati dalla comunità.
Tante città europee dimostrano come esempi
di diverso tipo, senza alcun legame diretto, siano
accomunati da fattori che si ripetono. In modo
indipendente, queste esperienze sembrano
generare dinamiche in grado di trasformarsi in
modelli riconoscibili. Attraverso le parole chiave
– ri-uso, ri-generazione, ri-attivazione – riusciamo
a comprendere processi che in molti casi
presentano condizioni di uguaglianza,
indipendentemente dalla collocazione geografica.
In altre occasioni, invece, la chiave di lettura
è nuova, perché caratterizzata da condizioni
prettamente locali. Queste esperienze sono
frequenti e accomunate da modelli di gestione
che, prima di tutto, partono dal basso, da cittadini
o da gruppi organizzati. Gli architetti operano
in modo periferico, spesso ritagliandosi un ruolo
di gestione all’interno di questi gruppi informali.
Ma i progetti virtuosi sono quelli dove convivono
esperienze di diversa natura, senza protagonismi.

Words and tools can be transformed into concrete
actions. The Luchtsingel, also in Rotterdam, is
a bridge partly constructed through a crowdfunding
operation and designed to connect different parts
of the same neighbourhood. Linked to it is the
Schieblok, a building containing ZUS (Zones
Urbaines Sensibles), a design studio that began
organising its re-activation in the early 2000s,
first by occupying it, then by converting it into
a hub used by designers, video makers, artists
and architects.
Madrid is another very active city, thanks to
the different citizens’ communities who run
self-managed projects. The Campo de Cebada
and the Tabacalera, are two examples of good
active practice in the Spanish capital and were
recently added to Los Madriles, a map of the city
that illustrates the inestimable potential of these
independent movements. The “informal city”,
as the organisers define it, brings together over
100 initiatives promoted by the people of the city,
covering things like street cleaning, the
identification of “quiet streets” as alternative
routes for cyclists, city allotments and spaces
that communities have regained control of.
Many European cities demonstrate the way in which
seemingly unconnected examples of different kinds
share recurring features. Independently of each
other, these experiences seem to generate
dynamics that can be transformed into recognisable
models. These key words – re-use, re-generation,
re-activation – can enable us to understand
processes which in many cases display identical
conditions, irrespective of their geographical
location. In other cases, we gain new insights,
because the situation pertains to a particular local
area. These experiences are frequent and share
common management models which, first and
foremost, start at grass roots level, with citizens
or organised groups. Architects operate in
a peripheral way, often establishing for themselves
a management role within these informal groups.
But the virtuous projects are those in which
experiences of different kinds co-exist, without
any one element trying to dominate

Allan Wexler è un navigatore di confine tra arte
e architettura, un equilibrista dei margini tra
le discipline. Certo è un maker, o un “thinkerer” se
si vuole usare il neologismo che John Seely Brown
– ex responsabile del leggendario centro di ricerca
Xerox di Palo Alto (Xerox PARC) – fece circolare
dal 2007 mettendo insieme le parole thinking
(pensare) e tinkering (armeggiare). Ma innanzitutto,
per formazione, Wexler è un architetto: ha studiato
presso la Rhode Island School of Design e il Pratt
Institute di New York, dove hanno cercato
di convincerlo a progettare edifici veri e propri. Non
ci sono riusciti, ma senza per questo impedirgli
di sviluppare un profondo interesse per i fondamentali

Allan Wexler is an explorer of the boundary between
art and architecture, a kind of tightrope walker on
the borderlines between disciplines. He is certainly
a maker, or a “thinkerer” if we want to use the
neologism coined by John Seely Brown – former head
of the legendary Xerox research centre in Palo Alto
(Xerox PARC) – in 2007 as a portmanteau of the
words think and tinker. But first of all, by training,
Wexler is an architect. He studied at the Rhode Island
School of Design and the Pratt Institute in New York,
where they tried to persuade him to design actual
buildings. They didn’t succeed, but this did not
prevent him from developing a profound interest
in the fundamentals of architecture, and investigating
the links between forms and what we are accustomed
to call functions - providing shelter, sitting, eating,
sleeping, collecting rain water – in a word, dwelling.
This term forms a kind of molecular field in which
Wexler has been operating for more than forty years,
explored above all not on the scale of the
architectural or urban project but through one
in which there is a close relationship with the body.
He is interested in furniture, objects, and sometimes
houses, but in their most basic form, as huts
(or sheds, like the ones so commonly used to store
tools in the gardens of American suburban homes,

The critic Aaron Betsky, in an extensive essay
devoted to Allan Wexler, dwells at length on the
concept of the primitive hut and the founding myths
of architecture, whether we are talking about
an aedicula, the fire around which people gather
or a nomad’s tent. These are concepts that Wexler
have examined in a series of different ways.
He is interested in the relationship between design
and nature – one of the three main currents
(along with analysis of the processes of creation
and construction and of the ritual forms of social
coexistence) into which he subdivided his work for
a major exhibition in 1997 – and this provides fertile
ground for project that do not lack humour, be they
practical or just conceptual. Wexler’s own account of
one of his earliest efforts is telling: “In 1973, shortly
after receiving my degree in Architecture [...], I went
into the forest searching for four trees that formed
a square. When that task proved unsuccessful,
I chopped one down, propped it back up with two
by fours and repositioned it in relationship with three
other trees to make a square.” Wexler labeled this
Architecture. Starting from that form of recomposed

su instabili declivi naturali. In Breaking Ground
(2011-2014), un lavoro a respiro più ampio condotto
con il suo consueto metodo fatto di variazioni
ed esercizi reiterati su un tema o un oggetto, Wexler
va alle radici di ciò che costituisce un insediamento
umano e mette in scena le azioni elementari
di addomesticamento del suolo e del paesaggio
naturale: impronte, scavi e sopraelevazioni, piani
praticabili in pendenza, consolidamenti e ricuciture
del terreno. Combinando scultura, fotografia,
disegno e altri accorgimenti, Wexler dà forma a un
abaco di stratagemmi (miniaturizzati) di immediata
evidenza e, per questo, di sorprendente forza
didattica. Il cui tono generale, però, non ha nulla
di assertivo: poiché anch’esso trasmette quel senso
di leggera indeterminazione che sottilmente, e forse

in years with other images. In Reframing Nature
(2014-15), a direct extension of those early
experiments, branches of trees sprout excrescences
of primary solids, in a budding of cubes
and tetrahedrons as genetic deviations of their
process of growth. In Landscape (2015), subtle
balances are sought on unstable natural slopes.
In Breaking Ground (2011-14), a work of broader
scope carried through his usual method made up
of variations and repeated exercises on a theme
or an object, Wexler goes to the root of what
constitutes a human settlement and stages
the elementary actions of preparing the ground
and the natural landscape. He uses imprints,
digging holes and raising mounds, workable
sloping surfaces, and consolidation and also “mends”
terrain. Combining sculpture, photography,
drawing and other media, Wexler has created a chart
of (miniaturized) stratagems with immediate
impact and, consequently, surprising educational
force. The general tone of his work, however,
is anything but assertive. It conveys that sense
of light-touch indeterminacy which subtly,
and perhaps ethically too, pervades all his work

risplendono su Broadway, “the neon lights are bright
on Broadway”, ma grazie alla lungimiranza di Jung

A well-known song reminds us that “the neon
lights are bright on Broadway”, but thanks
to the vision of Jung Hyun Woo, a Harvard
Graduate School (GSD) PhD candidate, and
Jonathan Cohn, a principal with the NYC office
of Perkins Eastman Architects, Broadway could
be more exciting, ecological and pedestrian
friendly than ever. Both GSD co-instructors
propose something in a not-too-distant future
which is also possible – one in which a stretch

The Green Line concept is a 3.2 kilometer / 2.7 mile green “pedestrian-only”
segment of Broadway in Manhattan. The vehicular elimination wouldn’t have
an impact on traffic flow. Liberating the segment of “B-Way” would provide
a myriad of human opportunities and experiences ranging from abundant green
spaces, walking paths, bike ways and neighborhood-connecting elements.

Il team di progettisti fa però presente che il segmento
diagonale di 3,2 chilometri / 2,7 miglia da loro
immaginato, rappresenta una ridondanza derivante
dalla storia stessa di questa strada, quando era
ancora un sentiero su un crinale prima di trasformarsi
nella prima via di comunicazione terrestre verso
nord della città. In effetti persino per il newyorchese
più appassionato diventa evidente che la porzione

and streetscape/landscape elements for sitting,
gathering and neighborhood-connecting. At first
sight, one might bristle at the thought of a
vehicleless Broadway – a street which has been
associated with the gleaming of chrome bumpers
of bright yellow taxis reflecting a million Times
Square lights. This design team points out,
however, that the diagonal 3.2 kilometer / 2.7
mile segment they include in their project
is actually a redundant section in terms of the
street’s own history dating back to when it was
a ridge-line trail before it evolved into the city’s
first northern land route. In fact, even the most
ardent New Yorker would have to admit that any
analysis of New York City reveals that taking

Besides, some sections of this world-renowned
asphalt stretch are already one-way, with one
half (from centerline to curb) allocated to bike
and pedestrian usage. Times Square romantics
need not fret since Broadway is already
partially pedestrian and would not be any less
spectacular without its cars. The timing for
such a bold move to transform Broadway into
the Green Line is auspicious. Many large
metropolises throughout the world are already
restricting traffic flow in city centers and are
recognizing the advantages and the success
of pedestrian-only zones. Las Ramblas
in Barcelona is the paradigm that first comes
to mind when speaking of pedestrian-city areas.
When Broadway is eventually converted to
the Green Line, it too will rank high on the list

La Manhattan verde di queste pagine per ora è solo
un concept. A diventare realtà entro il 2021 è invece
la Lowline, il parco sotterraneo dal clima tropicale
ideato da Dan Barasch e James Ramsey nel Lower
East Side: quattromila metri quadrati ricavati
da una ex fermata della metropolitana in disuso.
Per riuscire a farvi crescere la vegetazione James
Ramsey - architetto fondatore di RAAD Studio
e ingegnere della NASA - ha creato dei collettori
parabolici che fanno convergere sotto terra la luce
naturale. Un’iniziativa non molto economica
(80 milioni di dollari per farla partire, quattro milioni
all’anno per mantenerla), ma che si presta
a diventare un modello di riferimento per il riuso
di altre infrastrutture urbane. Per riuscire
a convincere l’amministrazione cittadina, il progetto
è stato realizzato sul cinque per cento della

The real park is underground
The green Manhattan shown on these pages is for
now just an idea. What will become real in 2021,
meanwhile, is the Lowline, an underground park
with a tropical climate dreamed up by Dan Barasch
and James Ramsey on the Lower East Side. This
comprises some four thousand square metres of
space in an abandoned subway terminal. To enable
plants to grow here, James Ramsey – one of the
architects who founded RAAD Studio and a former
NASA engineer – created parabolic collectors that
bring daylight underground. This initiative does
not come cheap (it cost 80 million dollars to get
off the ground and will need four million a year
to keep it going), but it lends itself to becoming
a reference point for the reuse of other urban
infrastructures. To convince the city authorities
of its viability, the project has initially been created
across just five percent of the total surface
area, so that its efficiency can be understood.

mediare tra pubblico e privato, architettura e natura. Ma proprio per questa sua flessibilità,
oggi sta diventando cruciale. Lo racconta ad Abitare il paesaggista Andreas Kipar
Landscape design is an atypical discipline. It has long time scales and often has
to mediate between the public and the private, architecture and nature. But it is precisely
because of this flexibility that it is becoming crucial in today’s world. Here landscape
architect Andreas Kipar discusses these issues with Abitare

 Al paesaggista si addice il ruolo di moderatore
La società contemporanea si trova di fronte a nuove importanti
sfide sociali, economiche e ambientali che condizionano e
condizioneranno i nostri stili di vita e quindi lo sviluppo delle nostre
città. In maniera trasversale lo sviluppo urbano contemporaneo mira
al raggiungimento di un livello superiore di qualità della vita, che
sempre più si sta identificando con la creazione di spazi aperti di
qualità verso un rinnovato desiderio di natura, o meglio di naturalità:
l’urbanizzazione accelerata porta con sé l’esigenza di una maggiore
articolazione e distribuzione capillare degli spazi aperti. Se gli spazi
aperti stanno ricoprendo un ruolo da protagonisti nel ripensare
le nostre città è perché la percezione del paesaggio

(e del paesaggismo) è cambiata. Il lavoro del paesaggista
si fa sempre più interprete del cambiamento della società proprio
perché la vita pubblica è e sarà il fattore chiave dell’urban design.
Porto sempre con me l’anticipazione lungimirante di Bruno Zevi:
«La paesaggistica insegna qualcosa di fondamentale agli architetti:
è perverso anchilosare la crescita, le strutture vitali non possono
essere ibernate. Per questo verso le indagini nei territori e nei
paesaggi sono liberatori anche in chiave architettonica… gli ideali
non riguardano più la stabilità, l’armonia, l’equilibrio, il necrofilo
distacco, ma la gestione della conflittualità, dell’angoscia
esistenziale, e di un rigenerato nomadismo».
I rItmI dIlatatI del progetto
Il paesaggista cerca quindi di osservare
le problematiche del territorio, ascoltare i bisogni
dei cittadini e prevedere un fattore di partecipazione
con la prospettiva di instaurare un dialogo continuo
tra utenti e istituzioni, pubblico e privato, architettura
e natura, consolidamento e trasformazioni,
tra la quotidianità in accelerazione e una naturalità
in “decelerazione” rispetto ai ritmi urbani
dell’informatizzazione e delle infrastrutture.
Queste premesse fanno ben comprendere come
il progetto del paesaggio sia una disciplina atipica,
scandita da ritmi dilatati se confrontati con quelli,
sempre più rapidi, dell’architettura costruita.
Il paesaggista di oggi lavora sempre meno sui
“resti” dell’urbanizzazione come durante il periodo
del boom economico, ma tenta di porre il suo
lavoro come premessa ai processi di trasformazione
e gestione del territorio, in un’ottica di una più ampia
rigenerazione. In processi progettuali sempre
più complessi, al paesaggista si addice il ruolo
di moderatore grazie anche al suo approccio
multidisciplinare capace di coordinare e agire
“glocalmente” sia all’interno del proprio team,
sia verso l’esterno. Proprio per questa sua capacità
di catalizzare lo sviluppo anche in maniera inclusiva,
sta diventando una disciplina fondamentale
sia in contesti consolidati come quello europeo,
sia in paesi in via di sviluppo, come testimoniano
il concorso di sviluppo urbano a Pristina (Kosovo)
al quale abbiamo partecipato qualche mese fa con
il concept Kodrina Green iDensity o la
partecipazione straordinaria alla Design Week 2015
di Città del Messico, cui siamo stati invitati
in qualità di rappresentanti del disegno italiano
del paesaggio.
 The landscape architect has the role of moderator
Contemporary society is faced with new social, economic
and environmental challenges that are conditioning and will
continue to condition lifestyles and thus the growth of our cities.
Across the board contemporary urban development aims to achieve
a superior quality of life, something that is increasingly identified
with the creation of open spaces to satisfy a renewed desire
for nature, or rather for naturalness. And accelerated urbanization
brings with it the need for a greater articulation and more
widespread distribution of open spaces. If open spaces are playing
a leading role in the rethinking of our cities it is because the
perception of the landscape (and landscape design) has changed.

The work of landscape architects is increasingly becoming a matter
of interpreting changes in society, and this is because public life
is and will go on being the key factor in urban design. In this sense
I always like to keep in mind Bruno Zevi’s far-sighted intuition:
“Landscape design teaches something fundamental to architects.
It is a bad idea to stiffen growth; living structures cannot be put
on ice. From this perspective investigations into territories and
landscapes are liberating even from the architectural viewpoint...
The ideals are no longer concerned with stability, harmony, balance,
necrophilic detachment, but with the handling of conflict, existential
angst and a regenerated nomadism.”
The proTracTed pace of The projecT
A landscape architect tries to discover problems
linked to the territory, and listen to the needs
of the local people and encourage participation,
with the prospect of establishing a dialogue between
users and institutions, the public and the private,
architecture and nature, consolidation and
transformation, and between an accelerating daily
life and a naturalness that is “decelerating” with
respect to the urban pace of computerization and
of infrastructures. These premises make it clear that
landscape design is an atypical discipline, in which
the pace of realization is drawn out in comparison
with the ever faster one of construction. Today
landscape architects work less and less on the
“remnants” of urbanization, as they used to during
the period of the economic boom, but try to make
their work the basis for processes of transformation
and management of the territory, from the
viewpoint of wider ideas of regeneration. In ever
more complex planning processes, the landscape
architect is well suited to the role of moderator,
thanks in part to a multidisciplinary approach
capable of coordinating and acting “glocally” both
within his or her own team and towards the outside
world. It is this ability to catalyse development in an
inclusive manner that is making landscape design
into a fundamental discipline both in established
contexts like the European one and in developing
countries. This, for example, can be seen by looking
at the competition for the urban development
of Pristina (Kosovo) in which we took part a few
months ago with the Kodrina Green iDensity plan,
or our special appearance at Design Week 2015
in Mexico City, to which we were invited
as representatives of Italian landscape design.

La natura fLessibiLe e permeabiLe
deL masterpLan
Il progetto di paesaggio così diviene capace
di cogliere potenzialità inesplorate attraverso il suo
approccio non soltanto tecnico ma anche culturale
sul territorio: il tema delle scarse risorse finanziarie
a disposizione ci impone di ridiscutere le stesse
modalità di progettazione e si apre a scenari più
sfaccettati. L’elaborazione di masterplan flessibili
capaci di adattarsi alle esigenze che gradualmente
si vanno costruendo resta un elemento
determinante, uno strumento dalle connotazioni
informali capace, però, di generare soluzioni formali.
Un’esperienza in questo senso è ben raccontata
dalla storia del Parco Nord Milano, frutto di un
processo partito negli anni 70 e in continuo divenire,
un work in progress caratterizzato dal learning-by-
doing e da una sua “lentezza”, seppur in fieri.
Nella nostra esperienza abbiamo visto come
l’applicazione di un metodo processuale in realtà
dia i suoi frutti. I Raggi Verdi di Milano ne sono
un esempio: nati come risposta della società civile
alla crescente frammentazione delle progettualità
urbane, questi canali di mobilità lenta e spazi aperti
hanno dato vita ad una visione condivisa e sono
stati adottati dal PGT (Piano di governo del territorio)
di Milano nel 2012 come elemento strategico dello
sviluppo urbano. I progetti strategici per la Valle
del Sacco, a sud di Roma, e per il sistema di canali
Regi Lagni nel territorio oggi noto come “Terra dei
fuochi”, sono anch’essi partiti dalle potenzialità del
paesaggio però con la finalità di riscattare territori
degradati e compromessi da modelli di sviluppo
insostenibili, lavorando con il tema dell’acqua
per riavvicinare le persone alla natura e riattivare
l’identità locale. A Roma si è intervenuto con
lo stesso principio, ma su un contesto differente:
la strategia territoriale Arcipelago Verde ha messo
a sistema le preesistenze storico-ambientali del
territorio metropolitano della capitale, fornendo
una cornice sovraordinata in cui si possono inserire
progetti locali ma d’interesse metropolitano, se non
internazionale, come il progetto del nuovo Stadio
della Roma e ora l’impalcatura ambientale-
paesaggistica della candidatura olimpica Roma 2024.
The flexible and permeable naTure
of The masTerplan
A landscape project can become capable of seizing upon
unexplored potentialities through an approach to the
territory that is not just technical but also cultural.
The relative lack of financial resources today makes
it necessary to take another look at the modalities of
design and to be open to more multifaceted scenarios.
The drawing up of flexible master plans that are able to
adapt to the requirements that are gradually emerging
remains a decisive factor, an instrument with informal
connotations but also one capable of generating formal
solutions. A good example of this is provided by the story
of the Parco Nord Milano, the product of a process that
began in the 1970s and continues today. This complex
park is a work in progress marked by learning-by-doing
and by the “slowness” of its emergence from an
embryonic state. In our experience we have seen how the
application of a processual method bears fruit in reality.
The Raggi Verdi or “Green Spokes” of Milan are an
example. Born as a response on the part of civil society
to the increasing fragmentation of urban planning, these
channels of slow mobility and open spaces have given
rise to a shared vision and have been adopted by
the PGT (Regional Zoning Plan) of Milan in 2012 as a
strategic element for urban development. The strategic
projects for the Sacco Valley, south of Rome, and for the
Regi Lagni canal system in the region now known as the
“Terra dei fuochi”, or “Land of Fires”, also started out
from the potentialities offered by the landscape, but with
the aim of redeeming areas that have been degraded
and are compromised by unsustainable models of
development. Central here is the theme of water which
can be used to bring people close to nature again and
revive local identity. The intervention in Rome was based
on the same principle, but in a different context.
The Green Archipelago territorial strategy there has
systematized the historical and environmental features
of the capital’s metropolitan region, providing an
overarching framework in which to insert projects
of a local character but also of metropolitan, if not
international interest. Examples here include the project
for Roma’s new stadium and the environmental
and landscaping underpinning for Rome’s candidature
for the 2024 Olympics.

Il valore fondamentale della bellezza
Tutto ciò prelude ai forti cambiamenti del nostro pensiero e del nostro
agire nel tempo dell’Antropocene, l’era caratterizzata a tal punto
dall’intervento antropico sull’ambiente e sul clima che oggi in ambiti
urbanizzati l’uomo è in grado di produrre più biodiversità della natura
stessa. L’esperienza che mi riguarda più da vicino è quella della città di
Essen e del suo percorso pluridecennale che ben rappresenta questa
tendenza: una volta capitale industriale della regione della Ruhr, dopo
processi partecipati di pianificazione, interventi di riconversione
postindustriale e, non da meno, la nomina della Ruhr a Capitale
Europea della Cultura 2010, ha saputo trasformarsi in polo culturale
e nel 2017 sarà addirittura Capitale Europea del Verde. Rileggendo
le dinamiche di questo processo ci si rende conto di come siano
necessari alcuni principi guida per la rigenerazione dei nostri territori:
consapevolezza delle problematiche, cooperazione tra le istituzioni,
comunicazione efficace e continuità nel coordinamento. Occorrono
visioni per il lungo periodo e interventi a breve-medio termine per
garantire uno sviluppo sostenibile che coinvolga tutti gli stakeholders
e tenga conto da un lato delle tendenze e delle sfide internazionali,
dall’altro delle peculiarità del luogo. Il fattore fondamentale per
il successo di questi processi è sicuramente il paesaggio nella forma
di una nuova natura urbana che innanzitutto migliora il funzionamento

anche benessere sociale, investimenti, posti di lavoro innovativi e, non
da ultimo, riporta la bellezza nella nostra quotidianità urbana. Il “City
Beautiful Movement” di Daniel Burnham all’inizio del Novecento
promosse la bellezza nelle città non solo per sé stessa, ma anche
per creare virtù morale e civile tra le popolazioni urbane. Chissà
se questo richiamo alla bellezza che ha dato il via alla rigenerazione
urbana di tante citta americane, non possa essere utile anche per
i nostri tempi, per rilanciare una nuova progettualità come autentica
rappresentazione di un nuovo modo di agire sostenibile, all’interno
del quale la figura dell’Architetto, e non solo quello del Paesaggio,
possa ritornare a essere a servizio della Società.

The fundamenTal value of beauTy
All this presages great changes in our thinking and our activity
in the age of the Anthropocene, an epoch marked to such an extent
by human influence on the environment and the climate – so that
in urbanized settings we are able to produce more biodiversity than
nature itself. The experience that concerns me most directly is that
of the city of Essen and its decades-long journey that well represents
this tendency. Once the industrial capital of the Ruhr valley, after
participatory planning processes, schemes of post-industrial
conversion and the selection of the Ruhr region as European Capital
of Culture in 2010, this place has been able to turn itself into a
cultural centre. In 2017 it will be European Green Capital. If we look
back at the dynamics of this process, we see that some guiding
principles for the regeneration of our territories are necessary.
We need an awareness of problems, cooperation between
institutions, effective communication and coordination. We also need
long-term visions and short to medium-term interventions to ensure
sustainable development that involves all stakeholders and takes into
account international tendencies and challenges on the one hand and
local peculiarities on the other. The fundamental factor in the success
of these processes is undoubtedly the landscape in terms of new
forms of urbanised nature that will in the first place improve the
functioning of cities and their resilience in the face of climate change,
but also generate social well-being, investment, innovative forms
of employment and, not least, bring beauty back into our daily urban
lives. At the beginning of the 20th century Daniel Burnham’s City
Beautiful Movement promoted beauty not just for its own sake, but
also to foster moral and civil virtues in urban populations. Who knows
whether this call for beauty that set an authentic urban regeneration
in motion in many American cities might not prove useful in our own
time as well, introducing a new approach to planning and design as
a genuine representative of a new kind of sustainable action, within
which the figure of the architect, and not just that of the landscape,
can be placed once again at the service of society

 È un grande tetto verde l’elemento distintivo
della nuova stazione di Kaohsiung, seconda città
di Taiwan per grandezza. Firmato dallo studio
olandese Mecanoo, il progetto – l’inaugurazione
è prevista nel 2024 – è un hub per la mobilità
sostenibile e offrirà ben 32mila metri quadrati
di spazio verde, di cui oltre 20mila sul tetto,
che si estende per 330 metri da nord a sud
e 675 metri da est a ovest, disegnando una forma
organica connessa al quartiere. Distribuita
su quattro livelli sotterranei, la nuova stazione
integra differenti mezzi di locomozione – treno,
metropolitana, autobus urbani e interurbani,
taxi e biciclette – ed è anche lo snodo centrale
del Kaohsiung Metropolitan Area Underground
Railway Project, un tunnel ferroviario sotterraneo
con sette fermate distribuite lungo dieci chilometri.

A large green roof is the distinguishing feature
of the new station in Taiwan’s second largest
city Kaohsiung. Designed by the Dutch studio
Mecanoo, the project, which is due to open
in 2024, is a sustainable transportation hub
that will create 32,000 square metres of green

L’area verde sulla copertura si propone come
una piazza, un luogo a disposizione della
comunità locale per eventi pubblici open air,
anche perché fornisce riparo dalle asperità
del clima tropicale per mezzo di una copertura
molto spessa che ha lo stesso effetto di una
fronda boschiva. Il tetto verde ondulato è alto
dagli otto ai sedici metri rispetto al livello
stradale e arriva a diciotto in corrispondenza
della piazza coperta, sorta di “baldacchino”
che connette tra loro un hotel, un edificio

of a space that can be used by the local community
for open-air events, providing shelter from the
vagaries of the tropical climate, with an extra-thick
roof that serves the same purpose as woodland

struttura corre una pista ciclabile, in direzione
est-ovest. Grandi fori ovali di diversa dimensione
(da 15 a 55 metri di diametro), disseminati sulla
superficie, assicurano luce e ventilazione naturale
agli ambienti sottostanti. Inglobata nel nuovo
progetto, la vecchia stazione di Kaohsiung, che risale
all’occupazione giapponese di Taiwan, diventa
il simbolo di una pacificazione tra passato e futuro.

Il paesaggio può favorire condizioni di progetto
molto singolari. Flora, fauna, tradizioni e costruzioni
di un luogo esprimono un fascino propulsore
nel processo creativo di un progettista. Le bacheche
di Pinterest e i profili Instagram dei designers
contemporanei ne sono la conferma. Se si guarda
al passato, dal Grand Tour in avanti, gli esempi
si sprecano: i presepi e gli interni delle chiese
fiorentine del Rinascimento sono stati fondamentali
per creare e consolidare la visione folk di Alexander
Girard così come il legame tra architettura
e natura in Tirolo prima, e in India poi, ha segnato
il linguaggio compositivo di Ettore Sottsass jr.
Il paesaggio può essere un catalogo di forme
al quale ispirarsi per l’evoluzione di uno stile.
È un motore d’immaginario perché non ci troviamo
di fronte a un distretto industriale col suo sistema
di attori e relazioni. Un paesaggio al massimo
offre una rete di occasioni per la memoria di gesti
e visioni che un luogo trattiene. L’affinità con
un contesto offre tracce da trasformare. Lo sanno
bene Mario Trimarchi e Antonio Aricò, due designers
di stanza a Milano, ma profondamente legati

The landscape is able to foster highly unusual
conditions for design outcomes. Flora, fauna, traditions
and constructions linked to a place can provide
a kind of fascination which can also be a driving force
in creative processes. The Pinterest boards and
Instagram profiles of contemporary designers are proof
of this. If we look to the past, to the times of the
Grand Tour, we can find a multitude of examples of this
tendency. The cribs and the interiors of the Florentine
churches of the Renaissance were fundamental
in shaping and consolidating the folk designs of Alexander
Girard just as the link between architecture
and nature first in Tyrol and then in India left its mark
on the language used by Ettore Sottsass Jr.
The landscape can be a catalogue of forms from which
to draw inspiration for the evolution of a style. It is also
basis from which imagination can work because we are
not dealing here with an industrial district and its system
of actors and relationships. A landscape at the most
provides a network of occasions whereby the gestures
and visions that a place holds can be recalled.
Affinity with a setting also offers traces which can be
transformed. Mario Trimarchi and Antonio Aricò, two

alle loro terre d’origine. Per Trimarchi la Sicilia
è un abaco di elementi che ha classificato e ritratto
attraverso il disegno. Questa tipologia d’indagine
nasce come sentimentale e si è trasformata
nel tempo in tassonomia di tipi, texture, atmosfere
e materiali. L’analisi del paesaggio ha ispirato
prodotti come il sistema per il bagno Time and Care
realizzato per l’azienda turca VitrA. Il progetto
nasce dalla rappresentazione di un intreccio
selvatico di piante aromatiche, specchi d’acqua
e anfratti tipici della macchia mediterranea. Un altro
ancora sono le tredici alzate da tavola autoprodotte
da Fragile, lo studio guidato da Trimarchi,
chiamate Oggetti Smarriti. La collezione costituisce
un paesaggio di architetture in miniatura che
ricordano foreste pietrificate, scogliere, pergole,
colline e rocce frastagliate. Anche i materiali usati
(alluminio, legno, metacrilato, rame, bambù
e giunco) sono un saggio di competenze artigiane
desunte da esperienze locali. Invece la Calabria
di Antonio Aricò è una centrale operativa. L’officina
di Reggio Calabria dove si adoperano suo nonno
Saverio e suo zio Fedele, rispettivamente nei ruoli
designers based in Milan but with deep connections
to the lands of their origin, are well aware of this.
For Trimarchi Sicily forms a set of elements that he has
classified and portrayed through design. His research
stems from sentiment but has been transformed over
time into a taxonomy of types, textures, atmospheres
and materials. The analysis of the landscape has inspired
products like the Time and Care range of bathroom
fittings designed for the Turkish company VitrA. This
project springs from the representation of the kind
of untamed intertwining of aromatic plants, pools of
water and ravines that is typical of Mediterranean scrub.
Another example is provided by the thirteen table stands
self-produced by Fragile, the studio run by Trimarchi,
and called Oggetti Smarriti. This collection is made up
of a landscape of miniature works of architecture that
recall petrified forests, cliffs, pergolas, hills and jagged
rocks. Even the materials used (aluminium, wood,
methacrylate, copper, bamboo and cane) are linked
to craft skills derived from local experiences. Calabria
on the other hand is the operational headquarters
for Antonio Aricò. The workshop in Reggio Calabria
where his grandfather Saverio and uncle Fedele perform

di prototipista e fotografo, raccontano un modello
di lavoro informale per necessità e agile per
dimensione e soprattutto complementare a quello
svolto a Milano. Aricò, con all’attivo esperienze
internazionali in Australia e Israele, più che
attingere alla tradizione italiana usa le condizioni
del territorio calabrese, ricco di contraddizioni
e in gran parte inesplorato, per sviluppare alcune
fasi del suo processo creativo come accaduto
per la collezione di arredi e complementi Taste
of Wood o per mettere in scena l’installazione
di landscape design che ha presentato al padiglione
Italia della prima Biennale del design di Londra
conclusasi a settembre. Bandiere stese si compone
di una teoria di lenzuola bianche. Sono distese
al sole e appese sui balconi delle case abbandonate
del borgo di Roghudi (Reggio Calabria). Oggi
è un paese fantasma, come tanti in Calabria, vittima
di un abbandono di massa avvenuto negli anni
Settanta a favore di Roghudi Nuovo. La migrazione
ha disperso una popolazione. Identità e storia
sono state abbandonate in cambio di una discutibile
idea di confort e modernità. L’installazione
è stata una riflessione sulla fuga dal meridione,
tra l’idea di resa e il sogno del ritorno.

represents an approach to work that is necessarily
informal, nimble in scale and above all complementary
to on-going work in Milan. Aricò, who has worked in
Australia and Israel, uses the conditions of the Calabrian
region rather than drawing on the Italian tradition.
This is an area marked by contradictions and which
is to a great extent unexplored, and it is here that he has
chosen to develop some phases of his creative process,
as with the Taste of Wood collection of furnishings
and accessories, or as the setting for an installation of
landscape design that he presented in the Italian Pavilion
of the first London Design Biennale held last September.
Bandiere stese (Flags spread out, editor’s note) – a work
that was composed of a row of white sheets. These sheets
were spread out in the sun and hung on the balconies
of the abandoned houses of Roghudi (Reggio Calabria).
Today this place is a ghost town, like so many others
in Calabria, a victim of a mass exodus in the seventies
to the new settlement of Roghudi Nuovo. The migration
has dispersed an entire population. Identity and history
have been abandoned in exchange for a questionable
idea of comfort and modernity. The installation was
a reflection on the flight from a south poised between
a sense of surrender and the dream of return

GLOBO, Bagno di Colore, design Creative Lab+ La ricerca
intrapresa da Globo ha portato alla creazione di nuovi colori ceramici.
La collezione si compone di 14 tinte, dalle sfumature più calde come
il castagno e il camoscio a quelle più fredde come l’agata o il perla,
oltre agli intramontabili nero o bianco opaco e all’originale verde petrolio.
Sono colori estensibili a ben nove collezioni in catalogo, caratteristica
unica tra le aziende dell’arredobagno.

con ogni tecnica, dalla lavorazione artigianale alle più sofisticate tecnologie

Verona from 28 September to 1 October. Current trends include designs that reinvent
natural stone by breaking it up, mixing it and recomposing it using every method possible,

Paolo Armenise e Silvia Nerbi Internazionalmente
nota per l’estrazione e la lavorazione del marmo, l’azienda
ha nel tempo allargato il proprio campo progettuale,
rivolgendosi alla ricerca dei materiali e al design,
la cui direzione artistica è affidata a Paolo Armenise
e a Silvia Nerbi. Loro è anche Tjandi, il vaso pensato
per l’arredo urbano, lavorato direttamente dal blocco
di marmo in diametri variabili da cm 60 a 150.
Known internationally for its marble quarrying
and processing work, the firm has over the years
widened the scope of its activities to include research
into different materials and designs, with art direction
by Paolo Armenise and Silvia Nerbi. One of their
more recent creations is Tjandi, a vase intended as
a street furnishing item, created directly from a block
of marble in diameters of between 60 and 150 cm.

Winner of the Product Design category of the
Red Dot: Best of the Best award, this ceramic
slab (5 mm thick, and measuring 100x300
cm), which can be personalised, is seen here
decorated with a geometric pattern made
up of pentagonal pieces. By turning the slab
through 90 degrees countless different
layouts can be created, giving rise to a kind
of three-dimensional puzzle. Suitable for both
indoor and outdoor use, it was used recently
on the Warsaw Spire office complex in Poland.

that can take on different configurations
thanks to two simple stone pieces,

GRASSI PIETRE, Perla dei Berici Una vena sfruttabile ricca, ma molto rara,
quella inividuata da Grassi Pietre nella cava vicentina Sc-ioso. Fornisce
un calcare prezioso, denominato Perla dei Berici, affine alla Pietra di Vicenza
Gialla. Compatto e poco poroso, più bianco per la minore percentuale di
ferrocontenuta, è arricchito dalla presenza di conchiglie fossili tondeggianti.
Grassi Pietre has identified a very rare but extremely rich seam to extract
from in the quarry near Vicenza, named Sc-ioso. This yields an exquisite
limestone, named Perla dei Berici, which is similar to Yellow Vicenza Stone.
Compact and non-porous, its whiter colour is a result of its lower iron
content, and the presence of round shell-type fossils gives it added appeal.

Del paesaggio inteso come rapporto tra
architettura e natura si può parlare alla scala
del territorio o della città. Oppure a quella
degli interni. Ambito nel quale bisogna riconoscere
un tocco particolare alla scuola giapponese
che negli ultimi vent’anni, attraverso le opere
di diversi autori (Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, studio
Sanaa, Atelier Bow-Wow, Sou Fujimoto e altri)
ha costruito un linguaggio poetico e riconoscibile.
Junya Ishigami è tra gli interpreti più brillanti
di questa visione. Le sue case e i padiglioni
rappresentano l’immagine estrema e metaforica
della distanza – forse incomunicabilità – fra
la natura libera e un’architettura intesa come arte
astratta e concettuale, fatta di “punto, linea
e superficie”. Premia Ishigami e le sue doti
di eleganza rarefatta il BSI Swiss Architectural
Award 2016. E in particolare tre sue opere:
il Kanagawa Institute of Technology Workshop
(2008), il padiglione giapponese alla 11. Biennale
di Venezia (2008) – vincitore a suo tempo
del Leone d’Oro, nella foto – e la “Casa
con piante” a Tokyo (2012).
The landscape can be understood as a relationship
between architecture and nature linked to sections
of territory, or the entire city – or with relation
to interiors. This is a realm in which we have
to acknowledge the special work of the Japanese
school, which over the last twenty years, through
the work of various figures (Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito,
SANAA, Atelier Bow-Wow, Sou Fujimoto and others)
has forged its own kind of poetic and distinctive.
Junya Ishigami is one of the most brilliant
exponents of this kind of vision. His houses and
pavilions offer an extreme and metaphorical way
of understand the distance – perhaps unbridgeable –
between wild forms of nature and architecture
understood as an abstract and conceptual art –
made up of “point, line and surface”. Ishigami and
his rarefied elegance has now been honoured by the
2016 BSI Swiss Architectural Award. Three of his
works have been singled out: the Kanagawa Institute
of Technology Workshop (2008), the Japanese
pavilion at the 11th Venice Biennale of Architecture
(2008) – which won the Golden Lion, pictured –
and the House with Plants in Tokyo (2012)
