1.

Kindergarten
- Life under water:
Water zones, animal and plant life, measuring and understanding depth;
Students created an underwater mixed media drawing;
- Fossils
Understanding of time- lines, the process of fossilization, basic geological facts, the work of
Paleontologists;
Students created clay fossils;
- Spiders
Life and habitat of spiders;
Application of patterns, numbers, and forms;
Students created a moving three-dimensional spider sculpture integrating basic weaving
techniques;

2. First Grade
- Life cycle of a butterfly:
Patterns, numbers, symmetry;
Students created a mixed media collage of a caterpillar;
- All about sailboats STEM lesson:
How sailboats work, spatial concepts, measuring and engineering;
Students were challenged to build a boat which could hold the most snap cubes
without sinking. The material was limited to one or two sheets of aluminum foil, five
wood sticks, one roll of tape, and a Styrofoam cup. Students could use scissors as a
tool. The planning time was limited to ten minutes and the production time to 20
minutes. Students worked in groups to develop boat designs and created their
unique boats. We tested the stability and loading ability of each boat. Students
learned about the developments of boats throughout history focusing on the
construction, the function, and the ability of the boats during different time periods.
Students created a clay sailboat, a sailboat race mixed media drawing, and a sailboat
sculpture.

- Life cycle of a plant:

Basic forms, gravity and movement, creation and assembly of flower parts;
Students created a flower sketch of the life cycle of a flower;
Students created a three-dimensional flower sculpture focusing on gravity and
movement;

3. 2nd Grade
- 2nd grade studied hot-air-balloons and learned about the first hot-air-balloon
invention by the Montgolfier brothers in France in the 1780’s. Students learned
about the physics of how hot-air-balloons fly and move in the air. Students studied
spatial concepts by creating a mixed media hot-air-balloon drawing. Students
created a hot-air-balloon clay project. Students used I-pads for research.

- Castles:
Students planned, designed and created castle sculptures by using the application of
three-dimensional forms; The planning process is connected to architecture and
engineering.

4. 3rd Grade
- Bird sculpture:
Students learned about the structure and basic mechanisms of human bodies, animals and
machines. Students created a bird sculpture with a mechanism that allows the bird to open
and close its beak.

5. 4th Grade
- PBL project focusing on engineering:
Students highlighted a “Star” by creating an artifact, figure, or animal with movable parts.
Students learned about the engineering progress and studied balance, movement
mechanisms like joints, and basic forms;
Students designed and created objects, people, or animals with movable parts using balance
or “joint mechanisms”;
Students used I-pads for research and planning;

6. 5th Grade
- Flowers:
Students learned about a variety of flowers and their forms; Students created flower and
form drawings by applying three-dimensional shading techniques;
Students created a Japanese flower arrangement while studying the chemical and physical
changes involved in the clay process;
Students used I-pads for research; analysis of three-dimensional movable artifacts using the
Smithsonian Museum app;
