Influence of Social Media on Teenagers

(Article Critique)

The article, “Influence of Social Media on Teenagers” , by Suren Ramasubbu , with its
thesis statement - social media affects the teenagers nowadays because it is one of the major
causes of cyberbullying, sexting, facebook depression and other realistic threats. It seeks to
explain the realistic threats of social medias which can affect the teenagers nowadays. It aims to
point out the possible risks of social medias developed and solutions to settle the problems.

From the context of the article, the author starts by saying that teenagers are
developmentally vulnerably because they are among the heaviest users of social networking,
thus, it is important to give attention on how social media influenced them. The first few
paragraphs of the article can catch the reader’s attention because the author uses statistics in the
introduction and surveys in proving its effectuality and it never failed to enumerate the possible
threats from the major idea to its minor ones which can strengthen the support of its topic. The
author also provides motivation and goals for the study, several findings, research questions and
methodological practices. For the coherence of the ideas, it shows organization, consistency and
logical reasoning in explaining the concepts and ideas which makes the article easy to
comprehend.

On the other hand, it lacks evidences to support more of the topic because it only focuses
on the 3 main realistic threats which are cyberbullying, facebook depression and sexting based
on the article. Meanwhile, the author did give citations but there are some citations that are not
stated specifically and completely, it says “recent studies shows..” and “another study
showed…” which this is part is where Facebook depression is discussed. However, those
citations had hyperlink texts but for me, I think it is not appropriate to state the citations like that.
Overall, it successfully links the available information to the references, where the author uses
recent studies to support the explanation.

In general, the article is worth to read, and very straightforward to explain the details.
Inorder to have more people to read the whole article, the citations need to be specific and it has
to elaborate more its information. This article conveys an important message which can be
beneficial to the people, especially, teenagers nowadays that need to be aware in using and
handling social networking sites safely. Lastly, the piece is relevant, concise and lays out simple
issues of the society.
