Special requirements for offline oil sampling,

Capacitance and PF testing of COTA & OTAA

bushings

The work should be performed when the transformer is de-energized and cooled down ( top oil temperature
< 50°C ).

1) Additional requirements are available in the “Guide for the Sampling of Oil from Trench COTA
Bushings for DGA”

Please make sure that all available equipment is available before starting :

a) For sampling purposes ( see list of required material §2.1 from the oil sampling guide listed
above )

b) For spare components of the fill plug :

The gasket should be replaced after sampling.

Spare fill plugs should be available in case it is misplaced

during the work

If you experience any difficulties with taking the oil samples, please contact Trench for further information.

CAUTION: Please make sure that the fill plug has been tightened after the work . Improper tightening could
cause moisture entry and result in hazardous damage of the bushing/transformer.
2) Additional requirements to the Capacitance and PF measurements of Trench COTA/OTAA Bushings

The capacitance and PF measurement should be performed according to the instruction manual of the
measuring equipment.

Special care should be given for the assembly of the cap ( stainless steel ) to the flange ( aluminium casting )
in order to prevent damaging the threads machined in the aluminum flange or potential tap cap.

a) LV bushings

After the measurements have been completed, the cap of the test tap should be installed by hand first and
then with a torque of 20Nm.

If the oil fill plug cannot be found or is blocked, please take pictures and contact Trench for further
information. Please include the serial number or the style number of the bushing. This information is
located on the nameplate.

b) HV bushing

After the measurements have been completed, the cap of the potential tap should be installed by hand first
and then with a torque of 40 Nm.

Spare caps and gaskets are available at Trench for both test tap and potential tap in case some parts are
misplaced during the work. It is advised to have these parts available at site to ensure re-energization of the
transformer after testing is completed.

Potential tap cap Test tap cap

CAUTION: There is a high voltage output if the test tap/potential tap is not properly grounded. Please make
sure that the caps have well been tightened after the work.

If you experience any difficulties with installing the caps, please do not re-energize and contact Trench for
further information.
