INTRODUCTION

In every organization, there is need for the comprehensive collection of ongoing

activities and processes that the organizations use to systematically coordinate and align
resources and actions with mission, vision and strategy throughout and this is why strategic
management is very essential in every organization. Strategic management should be
included because this is just like a continuous planning, monitory, analysis and assessment of
all that is necessary for an organization to meet its goals and objective and also for them to
grow. Every leader or manager has various strategic management styles which they adopt and
best suit to approach any kind of issues that arises within their organizations.

Therefore, an interview is been carried out using the Head of Department of Music,
Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo. Ogun state, to know about the kind of strategies he used
while operating and dealing with various issues and staffs in the work place.

The interview was scheduled for 2nd November, 2015. The interview questions goes thus:

 Can I know you sir and for how long have you been in this post?
 How many staff and student do you supervise?
 What kind of leadership style do you operate on?
 What are the strategic plans put in place to attend to any matter arising at work?
 For the period of time you have been in this post what is the most challenging issue
you have had and how do you resolve them?
 How do you handle management issues at your place?

From the reply gotten from the interview, the Head Of Music Department is by name Dr.
Segun Ojuola who has been in position as way back since 2013-till date and because the
department is just an upcoming one, the department just have 6 staffs and 39 student.

In analysing the other reply gotten from him, his leadership style includes all styles of
leadership but participatory- leadership style is the main one because he tries to consult the
opinion of his workers and their participation before taking some steps that would affect them
or the student which is very nice because their opinion are been heard before the final
decisions are been taken and they are encouraged to exploit their potential and assume greater
challenging responsibilities and he also see himself as a servant-leader to his followers. This
style would aid job satisfaction and morale of employees.
On the aspect of strategy, he basically emphasis on due process i.e. bureaucracy. He
said before any issue must be tender to him, it must have followed the laid down procedure
and in the absence of any beneficiary result then the matter should be brought forward. For
instance he gave the example of any issue transpiring between a student and a lecturer. The
student should talk to the lecturer first and when it become ineffective then the matter should
come to him and the same goes for the lecturer he has to report any student matter to him
before taking justice into his hand so that there would be fairness in their dealing. Him using
due process his fair enough because it makes work quite easier for him and not just any
arising matter would be showing up on his desk everything.

Every issue to him is quite challenging and has their own uniqueness which requires
different ways of approaching but him being a Christian and Babcock University being a
Christian-based university, he rely’s on God’s wisdom, God’s guidance in tackling with the
challenges he faced or the one’s he has faced so far. For instance he said on the issue of
discipline if you are not careful, you might end up doing what is called miscarriage of justice.
His manner of solving challenge is quite fair enough because with God, all obstacles can be
faced successfully.

Also, he believed that in handling management issue, you have to be very careful
because it requires high level of confidentiality and they are not issue directly for public
consumption until it is pronounced to be made known. And he tries to work within the level
of his own level of responsibility to management because he knows his responsibility to the
dean, who is his direct supervisor and also responsibility to deputy vice chancellor who is the
head of academic issue in the university. In this case, it is a very mature way of handling
management issue because when these issues are disclosed before the right time or disclose to
the wrong set of people, it can cause disorderliness, enmity and tagging of the people involve
as a bad leader. Hence, the management decisions taken at higher position is referred to as
corporate decision.

In conclusion, from the various reply we have gotten from this interview, additional
knowledge has been derived that management issues are not to be disclosed improperly and
although due process at times can slow decision making but in most cases it tends to be the
right decisions that are arrived at which you can refer to has corporate decision and this
would aid the fulfilment of all organizational plan either short-term or long term plan and
lastly, we should always put God first in our dealings.
