Quiz on Work Done by Several Forces
Answer the problems directly. Show your complete solutions.
a. Two blocks are connected by a very light string passing over a massless and frictionless
pulley. Traveling at constant speed, the 20.0-N block moves 75.0 cm to the right and the
12.0-N block moves 75.0 cm downward. During this process, how much work is done (a) on
the 12.0-N block by (i) gravity and (ii) the tension in the string? (b) On the 20.0-N block by (i)
gravity, (ii) the tension in the string, (iii) friction, and (iv) the normal force? (c) Find the total
work done on each block.
b. Clifford and James Rey pull a table. Each of them exerts a constant force of 650 N, one 30°
west of north and the other 45° east of north, as they pull the table 2 m toward the north.
What is the total work they do on the table?
c. Milward pushes Hannah’s chair 1.55 m along the floor with a force of 385 N while the
opposing force of friction is 39 N. How much work does each of the following forces do on
Hannah’s chair: (a) Milward’s 385 N push, (b) the friction force, (c) the normal force from
the floor, and (d) gravity? (e) What is the total work done on the chair
d. Jung Shin pulls Simba in a cart at a constant force of 505 N at a 30° angle to the cart’s
displacement. At the same time a constant 209 N frictional force on the cart from the
ground opposes the motion. Calculate the work done by a) the Jung Shin, b) the friction, and
c) the total work done on the cart when the Jung Shin pulled the cart 25 m along the
ground.
