1. Why did we choose this topic?

1.It tells us that there is a solution made, which is called SWAT, that degrades waste,
controls odor, remediates NH4, and converts waste into organic fertilizer.

2. It lets us know that tests have been made using this SWAT and results were shown that it
was really effective, e.g. it eliminated the odor of the urinals in Iloilo.

3. As SWAT has been tested in Cebu, it increased the level of Dissolved Oxygen, water
quality has been improved, and water started to be clear.

4. The treatment process of SWAT can be done instantly and effectively as it was applied to
the urinals, landfills, and etc.

2. What is the objective of the study?

To determine an alternative way of solid waste management and waterways treatment
through microbial remediation and bioremediation

3. Why should Filipinos be aware/ informed/ attend to the issue/ topic?

Why should the Filipinos be aware of this issue?

 Metro Manila ALONE dumps 861,967 tons of waste.

 PH ranks as 3rd biggest dumper of plastics
 If we don’t do anything about this issue, we risk not only the lives of aquamarine creatures in
our own waters, but also of our own people.
 No one wants Manila’s trash dumped on their lands. (who does anyway?)

4. How important is the topic for the Filipinos? What is its impact?

Why should Filipinos be aware of this biotechnology?

BIOREMEDIATION AS BIOTECHNOLOGY
Bioremediation is important in the restoration of fertility of soils, and the rehabilitation of
rivers and other bodies of water contaminated by pollutants.

Outline:
1. Status of solid waste management in the Philippines – status of water ways management
too
2. Identify the problem
3. Ways to target the problems:
I. Microbial remediation
II. Absorption of copper and other heavy metals by easily grown plants (fungi
<Mykovam>, jatropha,
III. Sewage and Active treatments (such as the one by the Hatake company --- to be
applied in the Philippines)
4. Cons of the solutions to the problem:
I. Introducing microorganisms to a new and different environment may cause them
to mutate dangerously
II. Plants that absorb these heavy metals may in turn, be a danger to the community
III. Do the bacteria die off when source of ammonia is depleted?
5. End
