My Experience At 113A

Before going to this course at CSUN, there are some things that I didn’t expect. Since my

writing isn’t the best, I wasn’t thinking that I’d do well in the class. I thought that in the class, it

would be a large number of students, but I am happy that it was small since it made it feel less

overwhelming. I also was thinking that there would be tests and quizzes in the course, but the

only thing there was were essays and assignments. I did expect the course to be difficult. Since

the class was a short 8 weeks, it made it feel rushed for doing essays.

Before going to this course, I felt my writing level was not the best. The type of grades on

essays in high school weren’t great which resulted in me having to go to this course before the

first semester of college. In the end, it wasn’t as bad as I thought.

The main thing I learned from this class is how to be a better writer. Part of that is writing

argumentative and analytic essays. Another thing I learned was how to better use MLA format.

That includes citation and format. I also learned how to make appointments at the LRC for

tutoring. I even learned how to write better outlines for the essays. I finally learned how to better

revise my essays to make them better than they previously were.

Throughout the course, there were a few things that I improved in. The first area where I

improved in was writing essays. Another area where I feel improved was with better formatting
for the essays. I am also more confident with writing outlines for essays to make them more

organized. Another area where I improved was with expanding paragraphs to meet the minimum

requirement. I finally improved with paraphrasing information from text into paragraphs. Those

were the things that I felt I improved.

When writing an essay, there were several steps I had to take before the finished product.

First, I was introduced to the prompt and started writing an outline. Then I wrote the introduction

alongside the outline. Next, I looked for sources to use in my body paragraphs. Then I started

writing the body paragraphs and included the sources as evidence and finished the conclusion.

Afterwards, I setup an appointment with the LRC so we can go over the essay to see if I need to

make any revisions. Once done with the tutoring, I revise the essay based on notes and then turn

it in.

Overall, I think that the assignments helped with better writing the essay. Doing the

outlines as assignments did help make writing the essay a bit less challenging. I felt that the

assignments did help with boosting my grade a bit better. Since I didn’t do the best on the essays,

the assignments made up some of the grade. In general, the assignments did make it easier to

understand writing an essay too.
