Assignment 10

In any classroom, teachers should be their rules known to their students, have

consequences that go with the crime, have some sort of incentives for the students to behave

nicely and integrate the students in the learning process. I believe that if the students understand

the rules inside the classroom then there should be no problem of them making poor decisions or

actions. For example, if the teacher said no drinks inside the classrooms then the students should

know that they are not allowed any drinks in the classroom. They must finish it or save it for

later before entering the classroom.

I believe that in a classroom setting, there should be rules and guidelines for the students

to follow while they are physically in the classroom. Some of the rules that I would have in my

classroom is no talking while someone else is talking. This shows the person who is talking that

everyone in the classroom has their full attention, they are listening and are being heard. I truly

think that if there Is only one person talking at a time then it will make the classroom and the

students run more smoothly and not hurt anyone’s feelings when everyone is talking, and it is

just chaos. Another rule I would like to have is that there should be no texting during class. I

understand that things will come up and their parents will text them or what not, but I would

strongly encourage the students and parents not to text during school hours and If it was an

emergency to have the parent call the school instead. Texting during class not only distracts the

student but everyone else around them and doesn’t make school a learning environment. I know

most teachers now don’t allow drinks or snacks inside their classrooms and I see why they don’t

want that but personally, I would allow my students to have a drink but only water in the

classroom because other sugary drinks make a sticky mess. Snacks on the other hand, I would

not allow that in my classroom because if the students get crumbs on the floor then we would get

ants and other bugs in the classroom and that is just not appropriate.

I would like to have posters up on the walls with all the rules and guidelines that I expect

in my classroom and for the students to follow. Having the posters on the wall allows the

students to have a constant reminder of the rules and guidelines I expect in the classroom, so they

don’t have to ask me a million times throughout the year because it would be on the walls. I

know from shadowing teachers, students ask questions even though the answers are on the walls

of the classroom. I believe that the students should be aware of the rules and guidelines from the

beginning of the year, so they know what to expect and how to act. As something fun for the

students, I would love to have a wall of just their photos and a little bit about themselves as a fun

project to do with the students. Making them feel welcome and comfortable during school is the

main purpose of doing the project. Getting the students involved with decorating the classroom

wall not only gets them excited but the teacher as well. I think it would also be a great idea to

have “student of the month or week” for the students to get involved and behave the way they

should. It could be an incentive for the students to behave so they could be the student of the

month/week and by doing that, it makes it fun for the teachers to pick out a student that they feel

like has been on their best behavior throughout the week/month.

I would like to have some behavior punishments for when the students are behaving

poorly and getting way out of hand to teach them a lesson. I believe that punishing the students

in a non-physical way is a great way for the students to learn and understand the rules and

guidelines of the classrooms. For example, if a student stole something from a teacher then the

teacher would come up with a punishment that best suites the crime. Some punishments could be

missing recess for the day or cleaning up garbage in the cafeteria after lunch. Just simple

punishments to show the student if you act poorly then there will be consequences. In a

classroom, I believe that taking small breaks here and there are great ways for the students to get

some stress off and get a drink of water or walk around to get refreshed to learn more! As a

student who has two-hour class periods, I love it when professors give us a five minute break to

relax, get a drink of water and relieve stress. For example, it is a great way for students to walk

away from a problem that they have been working on for a while and clear their heads and then

come back and try to solve the same problem again with a fresher head. What I have noticed

when I have shadowed in classrooms is how involved the teachers make their students. For

example, I saw a student’s doing a math word problem in front of the class and they all took

turns solving different problems and I thought that was a great way to have the students teach

their way instead of how the teacher wants them to solve it.

In conclusion, having a classroom that is a safe and fun environment is what all teachers

strive to make their classrooms. Teachers need to make their rules and guidelines very clear from

the beginning of school, so the students are aware and know how to behave in the classroom.

Having a structured routine for the students is another great way for the students to behave the

way they’re supposed to and having an incentive for the students to look forward to makes it

easier on the students and teachers. If there is a student who does not behave the way they are

supposed to then the teacher needs to have a non-physical consequence that goes with the crime.
