LECTURER : MADAM NURUL AKMAL BT KAMARUDDIN

DATE :23/07/2019

Objective :
I. Explore the L-edit software
II. Learn how to draw the polygon and write the port using L-Edit software
III. Learn how to check the error based on design rule

Equipment:

C. PROCEDURE:

1. EXPLORING THE L-EDIT SOFTWARE

L-Edit Display

1. shortcut icon will click on at the desktop for L-Edit display.

2. Click OK. Display shows as Picture 1 below.
3. If L-Edit Warning shows, ‘yes’ was clicked

4. Clicked <Home> or clicked menu View>Home. Display will be show

5. We was see the grid at the drawing area, We pressed (+) tab or (–) tab at the keyboard to
get maximum or minimum size of grid. The spacing between 2 dots (grid) is represent
1µm.

6. Cursor will moved to any color button, to see the name of layer.
2. DRAWING THE POLYGON & WRITE THE PORT

Draw polygon (box)

1. Cursor was moved to the boxes to choose layer. See the mouse function box.

2. any tool bar was choosed to draw the box, line, circle, triangle and the other.

3. to draw the box the mouse cursor was dragged

Draw orthogonal polygon (using ‘nibble’ icon)

1. Firstly, the rectangular was drawed

2. ‘nibble’was choosed and the box on polygon. Drawed
3. So, part of overlap will be cut out.
Draw orthogonal polygon (using ‘merge’ icon)

1. First, 3 boxes was drawed as below. all boxes was dragged

2. Clicked on tab Draw>Merge.

3 box be built Polygon are

where to put this polygon
Move only the polygon edge/ expand the size object

1. Purposed to outgrow or to understate polygon.

2. <Ctrl> and <Alt> was pressed at the same time and pull the polygon edge to expand the
size of object.

chooses move polygon
Copy function

1. Polygon was choosed . <Ctrl C>was pressed for copy and <Ctrl V> for paste. Then
c<Alt> was clicked to put copied polygon to place anywhere.

Type port

1. To type port, make sure it type on basic layer. Basic Polygon also must be from the same
layer.

2. on the text area was Put mouse cursor. port name was put as wanted. Changed the text size.
Then clicked ‘OK’

-Put port name as

wanted
Eg : vdd
Edit port

1. port was choosed firstly. menu Edit>Edit Object(s)… was clicked

the port name was

typed. Then clicked

OK
Rotate object

1. Firstly, the layout object rotate was choosed

2.

Delete the object

1. Firstly, arrow selection was clicked

2. Clicked on object, pressed ‘delete’ tab.

3. CHECKING DESIGN RULE

Design rule checker (DRC) function

1.

2. Type in the space provided location of the file DRC which you want to L-Edit
write. For example: - \ \ Ecad \ sew4213 \ user \ filename.DRC. File name is
free. Clicked on "OK." Display as below will appear.

3. To remove the error (cross,) clicked on the Tools menu> Clear Error
Layer. Displayed will appear. Clicked on "OK."

4. To view the errors, clicked on drawing area.

5. Make corrections one by one as there may be other errors will also
corrected. Do DRC again.
4. RUN CROSS SECTION

1. Maked the transistors are in a horizontal or side by side by using 'Rotate. "
2.

3. Type: - \ \ Ecad \ Tanner v7 \ LEDITDES \ tech \ mosis \ morbn20.xst in space

'Process definition file. "
• Selected by clicking the LMB on the "Pause after first step". If "Pause after first step"
not selected, the layout of the cross section will display all
not layer upon layer.
• Clicked on 'Pick' to adjust the section to remain in place
required.
• Selected Auto-fit in the window to get a suitable cross-sectional size. if it
not selected you can arrange using 'Exaggeration factor.
• Finally clicked "OK."

4. A display will appear at the bottom of the layout.

E. Exercise
. Draw the 2 box with length-10µm, width 3µm and spacing 1µm using the poly layer and check
the error based on the design rule. Are the drawings having error? If have, repair the drawing based
on the design rule.

Drawing with Error

Drawing with No Error

2. Draw the 2 box with spacing 2µm using metal layer and check the error based on the design rule.
Are the drawings having error? If have, repair the drawing based on the design rule.

Drawing with Error

Drawing without Error

3 Draw the rectangular with length-12µm and width-4µm using n-well layer. Rotate the
rectangular 90o left side. Also write the dimension of rectangular. Are the drawings having error?
If have, repair the drawing based on the design rule..

Drawing with Error

Drawing with No Error
Question

1. What is the function of design rule check?

*Design rule checking or check (DRC) determines whether the physical layout satisfies a series of
recommended parameters called design rules.

2. When we use the nibble icon?

*Nibble icon is used when we need to cut the overlapping area of a polygon.

3. What is the colour of n-active layer?

*Black colour

4. How to create one polygon with metal layer?

i)Choose a polygon shape

ii) First choose the metal layer from the table in the left
iii) Drag the mouse cursor on the drawing grid

Discussion
During the lab , we had learned about L-Edit software. L-Edit is a complete integrated circuit (IC)
layout editor with many built-in tools including a design rule checker and a layout extractor.
L-Edit can be used for doing traditional IC design and can also be used for designing
microelectromechanical structures (MEMS). A unique feature of L-Edit is its ability to obtain a
cross sectional view of the designed device. This is especially valuable when doing MEMS design.
There is a Student Version of L-Edit that is available. The student version runs on a PC . Although
the student version of L-Edit contains all of the drawing features of the full professional version.

Conclusion
From this experiment, we had learned about the L-Edit software. We had learned how to draw the
polygon and write the port using L-Edit software. We had draw the polygons according to the
height, length, and width given. We had check the errors using DRC function based on the design
rule. We also corrected the errors by using clear error layer. After that we had edit it and check it
and get the result without any errors. Lecturer also helps us to overcome the problems .
