How is a harmonic sequence obtained?

B. Presentation
1. Introduction/Motivation
- Present the WORDLES ACTIVITY through powerpoint presentation.
The sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 is a Fibonacci sequence. It was named after Leonardo Fibonacci of
Pisa who raised the same problem and discovered the sequence.
2. Lesson Proper
The pair of rabbits produced a new pair of rabbits after two months, and every month thereafter. In
like manner, the new pair of rabbits produced a pair after two months. How many pairs of rabbits
were there on the 4th month? 5th month?
a. Consider the rabbit population at the beginning of the 6th month
Month Growth in Pairs of Rabbits Total Number of Pairs
1st R 1
2nd R 1
3rd R + R3 2
4th R + R3 + R4 3
5th R + R3 + R4 + R5 + R3-5 5
6th R + R3 + R4 + R5 + + R5 + R3-5 + R3-4 + Rn-a 8
(Note R3-5 means rabbit born on the 3rd month R3 new produces a pair of rabbits born on the
5th month)

B. Establishing a Present a short biography of Leonardo Fibonacci …

purpose of the lesson
The 13th Century Italian Leonardo of Pisa, better known by his nickname Fibonacci, was perhaps the most talented
Western mathematician of the Middle Ages. Little is known of his life except that he was the son of a customs official
and, as a child, he travelled around North Africa with his father, where he learned about Arabic mathematics. On his
return to Italy, he helped to disseminate this knowledge throughout Europe, thus setting in motion rejuvenation in
European mathematics, which had lain largely dormant for centuries during the Dark Ages.
