Effect of Stress on Academic Performance of Students

Abstract:
Several studies have shown the positive relationship between stress by health and social
activities affecting the academic performance of students. Many researches on this topic are done
either on gender basis, different educational levels to find out the affect on academic
performance of students. It is within this research framework that we want to find out how much
stress on gender basis affects the academic performances of Masters Students of National
University of Computer and Emerging Sciences. Consequently, this paper attempts to determine
the factors of stress resulting from health and social factors affecting intellectual factors which
on further analysis on gender basis affect the academic performance of students. To accomplish
our objective, we took two samples of Master’s students enrolled in NUCES. First group was of
50 Male students and second was of 50 female students enrolled in 2012 and 2013. By
administering our questionnaire survey, information related to topics, past researches, Spss
analysis, and graphic representation we got to our final results. Results are presented graphically,
inferentially and descriptively. Regression analysis and Independent Sample T test are done for
the analysis to check the predictions of independent variables on dependent variable and
difference of affects on gender basis.

Effect of stress on academic performance of students in different streams M. Maajida Aafreen1 ,
V. Vishnu Priya2 *, R. Gayathri2
ABSTRACT Introduction: Stress arises when the combination of internal and external pressures
exceeds the individual’s resource to cope with their situation. For many young adults, college
and school are the best time of life. These critical years can also be undermined by depression,
anxiety, and stress. Students who do not cope well with stress have a very drastic effect in their
studies and behavior. Materials and Methods: A sample of 80 students were asked to answer a
survey prepared in online. The results were presented graphically, inferentially, and
descriptively. The objective of the current study was to assess the stress among students of
various professional colleges and its association with various academic, social, and health-related
factors. Result: Students studying in science stream had stress more compared to students
studying in other streams. It affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Students face
anxiety and go in to depression which later leads to decreased performance in academics.
Conclusion: Stress is the body’s reaction to a challenge. This research can help us in finding the
reason and the causes of stress thus helping the students in finding a solution to their problems
and help them enjoy their schooling stress-free and tension-free.

Abstract

Stress is a serious obstacle for a good school performance. For this reason a considerable number
of studies have been conducted. Meanwhile, attachment is considered as a basic borned
biological system (Siegel, 2001). There is a correlation between stress and attachment according
to the studies. When it comes to student academic success, the methods to measure it are varied.
One of the most commonly used is the average. Likewise, even when the relationship between
the average of results and stress was considered, a correlational relationship was found, between
academic success and appeasement. These study researches, as will be discussed below, are
carried out in different contexts. But results for this topic in the Albanian context do not yet
exist. Therefore, the aims of this study are to shed light on a topic that is still unexplored in the
Albanian context. It was extended to six public Albanian Universities, as follows: Tirana
University, Aleksander Moisiu University Durres, University "Alkesander Xhuvani" Elbasan,
University "Fan S.Noli" Korça, University "Ismail Qemali" Vlora, University "Luigj Gurakuqi"
Shkodra. The number of students who underwent on this study, was 1502. The dispersed material
was the questionnaire through which the students arithmetic average for the first semester of that
academic year, the type of attachment (based on Attachment Style Questionnaire built by
Feeney) and the level of stress (based in the Academic Stress Scale built by Rabani).
