BACKGROUND
La Indolencia de los Filipinos, more popularly
known in its English version, "The Indolence of the
Filipinos," is an exploratory essay written by
Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

4
BACKGROUND
Before the coming of Spaniards, the
Filipinos were industrious and hardworking
When the spaniards came, they became
gamblers, dependent, powerless, corrupt,
amnesiacs, disloyal to their “identity” , and
indolence.

Why did rizal wrote
this?

PURPOSE
- To serve the country by telling the truth.
- To show how we were discriminated.
- To illustrate how we inherited some of our
negative traits from the Spaniards.-
- To let us know how we could rise from
oppression.-
- To show us that we have been deceived-
- To remind us what we were, are, and could
7
be.
SALIENT POINTS
The spanish reign brought about a
decline in economic activities because
of certain causes:
1.
Establishment of the
galleon trade
✣ Cut off all previous associations of the
Philippines with other countries in Asia
and the Middle East.
✣ Small businesses and handicraft industries
gradually disappeared.

10
2.
Implementation of
forced labor
✣ Filipinos were compelled to work in
shipyards, roads, and other public works
abandoning agriculture, industry , and
commerce.

12
3.
Spain did not protect the
people against foreign
invaders and pirates
✣ Natives were killed, their houses burned,
and their lands destroyed.
✣ Filipinos were forced to become nomads
and became submissive to the mercy of
God.

14
4.
Crooked EDUCATION
SYSTEM
✣ No courses such as agriculture and
industry that can be taken by the
students to lead the country to
progress.

16
5.
Spanish rulers were bad
example to despise manual
labor
✣ Officials reported to work at noon
and left early, all the while doing
nothing in line with their duties.

18
6.
Gambling was
established
✣ There were cockfights everyday.
✣ Friars and Government officials were
the first to engage in all sorts of gambles
during feast days.

20
7.
Crooked system of
religion
✣ Friars taught the native Filipinos
that it would be easier for a poor
man to enter heaven.

22
8.
Extremely high taxes
✣ Huge portion went to the
government/friars.
✣ Exploited and reduced to inaction

24
Another thing that we might add that
had cause this indolence, is the lack of
unity among filipino people.
SUMMARY
CHAPTER 1
• Indolence does exist among the Filipino people as
Rizal admits it but not about the country rather ; it is
the experiences of the country.
• Climate is a factor of the Filipinos being indolent. “A
hot, climate requires of the individual quiet and rest,
just as cold incites to labor and action”. “A man can
live in any climate, if he will only adapt himself to its
requirements and conditions”
CHAPTER 2
• Indolence as a chronic illness. “Indolence in the
Philippines is a chronic malady, but not a
hereditary one”
• Before the arrival of Spaniards, Malayan Filipinos
raised on an active trade, not only among
themselves but also with other neighbouring
countries.
CHAPTER 3
• Enumerates several reasons that may have
caused the Filipinos cultural and economic
corruption.
• Wars: Spainards vs. natives and Moros
• Invasion of Pirates. Result: Diminished
number of Filipinos
• Forced Labor:
CHAPTER 4
• Abuse of Land Lords (encomenderos).
• Wrong teachings like; Why work? Rich
men don’t go to heaven, False teaching
of the church and Gambling
• Discrimination in education
CHAPTER 5
Causes of indolence can be reduced to two
factors:
• Limited training and education of Filipino
natives (developed inferiority)
• Lack of a national sentiment of unity among
them
Education and liberty is the key to solve this issue
“ A man in the Philippines is an
individual; he is not merely a
citizen of a country.”
