ACTIVITY TITLE: BIOMOLECULES - FOOD LABELS ( Worksheet # 1)

LEARNING TARGET/S: To analyze and compare food labels of different products
To recommend and promote food products with good nutritional value
CONCEPT NOTES:
Food products include nutrition facts label which contains specific information to help us
make healthful food choices. The following information will help us understand how to analyze
nutrition facts on food labels:
 A Calorie (Cal) is the nutritionist’s calorie.
1 Cal =1 kcal =1000 calories
1kilojoule (kJ) = 0.239 kilocalorie (kcal) = 0.239 Cal
 The average daily energy requirement which is supplied by diet ranges from 1500 calories to
2000 calories.
 The calorie value of the three main types of food energy are :
carbohydrates 4 Cal/g
proteins 4 Cal/g
fats 9 Cal/g
 The Percent Daily Value (DV) helps consumers determine whether a serving of the food is high
or low in nutrient and the Dietary Guidelines recommend the following proportions:
carbohydrates 45% to 65%
proteins 10% to 35%
fats 20% to 35%

MATERIALS: Food labels, calculator, paper, pen

PROCEDURE:
Determine the % carbohydrates, % proteins and % fats of your food labels and summarize your data
in the table below.
FOOD LABELS % CARBOHYDRATES % PROTEINS % FATS
1
2

COMPUTATIONS: Compute for the % Total Carbohydrates, % Proteins, and % Total Fats of your food labels using
the sample computations below.

1) FOOD LABEL 1 - _______________________

a. Calories Carbohydrates = 4 Cal/gram x ______grams of Total Carbohydrates = _________ Cal

b. Calories Proteins = 4 Cal/gram x ______grams of Proteins =__________Cal
c. Calories Fats = 9 Cal/gram x ______grams of Total Fats =__________Cal
TOTAL CALORIES (a+b+c) = __________Cal
1
% Carbohydrates = (Calories Carbohydrates ÷ Total Calories) x 100 = __________%
% Proteins = (Calories Proteins ÷ Total Calories ) x 100 = __________%
% Fats = (Calories Fats ÷ Total Calories ) x 100 = __________%
2) FOOD LABEL 2 - _______________________

a. Calories Carbohydrates = 4 Cal/gram x ______grams of Total Carbohydrates = _________ Cal

b. Calories Proteins = 4 Cal/gram x ______grams of Proteins =__________Cal
c. Calories Fats = 9 Cal/gram x ______grams of Total Fats =__________Cal
TOTAL CALORIES (a +b+c) = __________Cal
% Carbohydrates = (Calories Carbohydrates ÷ Total Calories) x 100 = __________%
% Proteins = (Calories Proteins ÷ Total Calories ) x 100 = __________%
% Fats = (Calories Fats ÷ Total Calories ) x 100 = __________%

3) FOOD LABEL 3 - _______________________

a. Calories Carbohydrates = 4 Cal/gram x ______grams of Total Carbohydrates = _________ Cal

% Proteins = (Calories Proteins ÷ Total Calories ) x 100 = __________%
% Fats = (Calories Fats ÷ Total Calories ) x 100 = __________%

4) FOOD LABEL 4 - _______________________

a. Calories Carbohydrates = 4 Cal/gram x ______grams of Total Carbohydrates = _________ Cal

b. Calories Proteins = 4 Cal/gram x ______grams of Proteins =__________Cal
c. Calories Fats = 9 Cal/gram x ______grams of Total Fats =__________Cal
TOTAL CALORIES (a+b+c) = __________Cal
% Carbohydrates = (Calories Carbohydrates ÷ Total Calories) x 100 = __________%
% Proteins = (Calories Proteins ÷ Total Calories ) x 100 = __________%
% Fats = (Calories Fats ÷ Total Calories ) x 100 = __________%

5) FOOD LABEL 5 - _______________________

a. Calories Carbohydrates = 4 Cal/gram x ______grams of Total Carbohydrates = _________ Cal
