GO-JEK: OTP via SMS easily verifies
As Indonesia’s most talked-about start-up,
GO-JEK is revolutionizing the motorcycle
taxi industry with its ride-hailing app. Now
customers can cruise through gridlocked traffic
via ojek, bypass fare negotiations and get
goods and services delivered to their door – all
within 60 minutes. What’s more, this game-
changing business has created thousands of
transportation industry jobs across Indonesia.
GO-JEK offers users a convenient and cashless
way to travel, courier items, order food and
shop. Via the app, users can even request on-
demand beauty services to their homes, like
hair styling, manicures and massages. Users are
kept informed about the status of their request
at each step, drivers can be tracked, and all
pricing is pre-calculated and payable with
an in-app wallet. To date, the app has been
downloaded more than 6.4 million times.

THE CHALLENGE
GO-JEK needed to find a way to confirm the validity of
users signing up for its service. This would enable them to
reliably send information to real users, while weeding out
automated bots or unidentified sources. The verification
solution needed to be simple yet effective, so that the
sign-up process would remain quick and easy for users.
THE SOLUTION
GO-JEK opted for two-factor authentication via SMS, an
ideal out-of-band solution that can’t be easily intercepted
by a hacker. Because this step requires human interaction
(users would need to input a one-time PIN), it couldn’t
be mimicked by a bot. 2FA via SMS is a user-friendly
authentication method that works on all handsets and
in all languages.
THE RESULTS
As SMS verification requires human intervention,
automated account registrations could now be prevented.
This meant that GO-JEK would be certain that each person
who registered for their service would be a real user. The
company has been able to increase its efficiency and cut
down on fraudulent activities typically initiated by
automated sign-ups (so-called ‘bad bots’).
