INTRODUCTION

Technological advancements influence how people live today. People keep on

exploring things, looking for some solutions just to lessen the efforts that people need to

accomplish their tasks. The Internet is an undeniable example for this shocking, yet

pleasant evolution of science. The special thing that people know about the Internet is

that it does not only support people in their works but also lessens the time spent in

accomplishing certain tasks. The digital revolution is changing everything it touches, and

the field of education is no exception. Until recently several large, all-purpose websites

have assisted students and teachers in finding necessary information regarding their

lessons. With free and low-cost, high-quality content accessible via the Internet, both

formal and informal online learning is becoming increasingly widespread, which some

fear could dampen the appeal of traditional higher education degrees and institutions. The

evolution of online games and the escalation of social media try to compete with the

expansion of online learning tools. The relationship of students’ Internet usage and

academic performance is still really unclear, and so, it is very important to have further

study on this matter.

Statement of the Problem

Students of Juan C. Angara Memorial High School employ the Internet in educational

matters such as writing papers, searches for answers to questions and communicating

with classmates on homework. However, time spent in activities where “surfing the net”

occurs could substitute away from time allocated to reading, studying and completing

homework. This may hurt academic performance in the short term. So, the study assessed

the effectiveness of the use of internet services and its effects on students’ academic

performances.

The following research questions were formulated to guide this study:

1. What is the respondents’ profile in terms of?

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

2. What is the frequency of internet use among the students?

3. How useful is the internet to students in their daily academic activities?

4. Which is the most used internet service?

5. Do the internet services influence students’ academic performance?

6. What are the problems faced by students in using internet services?

Assumption

The present study that will assess the effects of internet on students’ academic

performance presupposes the following:

1. The respondents will cooperate to this research about the effects of internet on

academic performance of Grade 10 students.

2. Students use internet to communicate and study.

3. On average, students spend at least 2-3 hours a day for internet use.

4. The impact of internet on academic performances could be positive or negative at

the same time.

Significance of the Study

Internet is becoming more popular among students and are a new way of spending

free time and serve as a separate channel for finding the necessary information, both

education and entertainment. Therefore, it is urgent to examine the question of what

effect internet have on their users, in particular, how the use of internet affects the

academic success of students. This study will discover this information, giving the

researchers an opportunity to explore and gain new knowledge.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the effects of internet on students’ academic performance. This

will be conducted among 111 selected students within the four sections (Aguila, Lawin,

Loro, Martinez) of Grade 10 in Juan C. Angara Memorial High School S.Y. 2020-2019.

The study limited only on variables of internet that the researchers assumed that has

effects on respondents’ academic performance and their frequency of using it.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The internet is a global linking of devices that allow information transfer. The internet

was established in the early 1960’s by the U.S department of defense for military

purposes. It is a fact that the internet is one of the greatest advancement in the world of

information technology as it has become a useful instrument that has fostered the process

of making the world a global village. The Internet provides an environment in which

millions of people participate and engage in the creation and exchange of information. It

allows for the exchange of information and for interaction among individuals in real time,

making transport and distance no longer a problem.

There are approximately 3.2 billion people on earth who has access to the internet,

about 56.1% of the world's population. Internet use has become very popular in many

areas as well as in education in recent years.

Internet provides access to the most diversified source of information hosted by

individuals and various organization worlds wide on a vast network of servers

(Ogungbeni, et al, 2016). Various studies have found that Internet use can have positive

benefits on educational achievement (Chen & Fu, 2009). One puzzling question is the

effective impact of the internet on student performance.

Acut, et al,(2012) conducted a research at Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute

of Technology on students’ academic performance and internet usage. A questionnaire

was designed and administered to students. The analysis showed that most of the

respondents admitted using internet always with 60%, often with 36%, while 4% of them
use it seldom. The investigation also shows that the most used internet service was for

social networking while the least is for gaming. of the respondents accepted that their

academic performance actually improved by using the internet.

A similar research was conducted by Luambano and Nawe (2004) on Internet Use by

Students of the University of Dar es Salaam. The study was to determine if students were

using the Internet for academic purposes, investigate the level of students’ access to the

Internet, as well as the problems students faced in Internet use. The survey method was

used as the basic method for data collection. The study revealed that the level of students’

access to the Internet was low, and the major reason was that at the time of the study,

computers with Internet ISSN: 2289-6694 Page 60 facilities were inadequate. The

findings also revealed that the students who had access to the Internet were not using it

effectively. They used it mainly for communication with friends and relatives more than

for academic purposes. The cause of this was found to be lack of skills required for

effective use of the internet.

In another study, Emeka and Nyeche (2016) conducted a research on Internet Usage

on the Academic Performance of Undergraduates Students at University of Abuja,

Nigeria. Results gotten from the research shows that 111(55%) of respondents use the

internet every day, 31(15%) use internet once a week, 9(5%) use the internet once in two

weeks, 26(13%) use the internet once in a month, 20(10%) use the internet occasionally

while 3(2%) do not use the internet. The findings show that majority of students use the

internet every day. The study revealed that Paying for online services was a problem

however; the study shows that Internet is one of the beneficial tools in this era of IT not
only for business but for academic point of view and enhances the skill and capability of

students which assist them in studies and professional life.

La Rose and Eastin (2004) confirmed Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura,

1986) that suggests six basic types of incentives for human behavior: novel sensory,

social, status, monetary, enjoyable activity, and self-reactive incentives. When applied to

the Internet, activity outcomes include feeling entertained, cheering oneself up, playing a

game one likes, hearing one’s favorite music. Monetary outcomes include finding

bargains on the Internet, saving time shopping, getting free information and getting

products for free. Self-reactive outcomes include relieving boredom, passing the time,

feeling lonely, forgetting problems, and feeling relaxed. Quantitative studies have found

that students have been using the internet to support their research and learning. By the

use of the internet, it's had a positive impact on their academic performances, namely by

doing homeworks, writing research papers and also provide a better learning experience.
