Diagnostic Codes for the Power Train Electronic Control

Module (ECM)
Use the Caterpillar Monitoring System or the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to
determine the diagnostic codes for the Power Train Electronic Control Module (ECM). After
determining the diagnostic codes, refer to the corresponding test procedure for more information.
Perform the procedure that corresponds to the Component Identifier (CID) and the Failure Mode

the Power Train ECM.

For the Power Train ECM, the MID is 081. This table pertains only to faults with a MID of 081.

Note: The service codes that are listed in Table 1 are for the Power Train ECM. Service code
information for the Power Train ECM is transferred via the Cat® Data Link to the Caterpillar
Monitoring System. When the Caterpillar Monitoring System is in service mode, the service codes are
shown on the display area of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The module identifier (MID)

identifies the Power Train ECM that is sending the service code. The MID for the Power Train ECM
is 081. This Service Manual Module will review service codes with a MID of 081. The MID of the
other electronic control modules on a particular machine are listed on the Electrical System Schematic
Supplement. Troubleshooting information for those service codes can be found in the service manual
for that system.

FMI 00 - Data valid but above normal operational range

Every electronic control system sets a high limit for the expected operating range of a signal. The
limit includes ranges such as high converter temperatures. A sensor that is still functioning but
sending a signal above the expected limit will cause the FMI 00 code to be stored.

Example - A pulse width modulated sensor is not expected to generate a valid signal over 80 percent
of the duty cycle. A sensor could generate a signal that is above 80 percent. The sensor is still
functioning but the signal is now above the expected signal limit.

FMI 01 - Data valid but below normal operational range

https://sis.cat.com/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisw... 23-08-2018
R2900G Load Haul Dump NLK00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY C15 Engine(... Página 9 de 11

Every electronic control system sets a low limit for the expected operating range of a signal. The limit
includes ranges such as low engine oil pressure. A sensor that is still functioning but sending a signal
below the expected limit will cause an FMI 01 to be stored.

Example - Most pulse width modulated sensors are not expected to generate a valid signal that is less
than 5 percent of the duty cycle. A sensor could generate a signal that is below 5 percent. The sensor
is still functioning but the signal is now below the expected signal limit.

FMI 02 - Data erratic, intermittent, or incorrect

FMI 02 occurs when signal data from a component is present. Then, one of the following events
happens to the data.

• The data disappears

• The data becomes unstable

• The data becomes invalid

Data can be correct at times and data can be incorrect at other times. This code also relates to
communication between electronic controls. For example, the Caterpillar Monitoring System looks
for the engine speed from the electronic control over the Cat Data Link.

FMI 03 - Voltage above normal or shorted high

FMI 03 occurs when the voltage reading from the component or the voltage reading from the system
is high. FMI 03 is often related to a signal circuit.

The following elements of a system can cause an FMI 03 code.

• The sensor

• The harness

• A related electronic control

The following descriptions are possible causes of an FMI 03 code.

• A sensor generates an alternating signal (duty cycle) and the output stops at maximum signal
output

• The sensor signal wire is shorted to the sensor power supply or is shorted to a greater voltage
than the power supply

• A signal wire is open between the sensor and the electronic control. Electronic controls
normally pull the input circuit to a positive voltage level. For example, the input circuit reads 5
V when the sensor is disconnected

• The electronic control has an internal short to a positive source on the connector contact of the
sensor signal. Also, a failed electronic control believes that a diagnostic code exists when the
signal circuit is functioning correctly

FMI 04 - Voltage below normal or shorted low

The FMI 04 is similar to the FMI 03. However, the FMI 04 shows voltage readings that are lower
than normal readings. FMI 04 is most often related to a signal circuit. The FMI 04 is similar to the
FMI 06. Sometimes, the FMI 04 is used instead of the FMI 06.

The following elements of a system can cause an FMI 04 code.

• The sensor

• The harness

• A related electronic control

The following descriptions are possible causes of an FMI 04 code.

• The sensor signal stops low or the sensor signal stops near a ground

• The signal wire of the harness is shorted to ground

• The electronic control has an internal short to ground on the connector contact of the signal
input

FMI 05 - Current below normal or open circuit

The FMI 05 occurs when the electronic control detects a current reading that is low.

The most likely cause of an FMI 05 code is open circuits or poor harness connections.

FMI 06 - Current above normal or grounded circuit

FMI 06 is similar to FMI 05. Except, the current of the FMI 06 is higher than normal. FMI 06 is most
often related to an output circuit of an electronic control.

Example - FMI 06 occurs when a circuit is shorted to ground.

FMI 06 is similar to FMI 04. Sometimes, FMI 06 is used instead of FMI 04.

FMI 08 - Abnormal frequency, pulse width, or period

FMI 08 occurs when a frequency of the signal or the pulse width of the signal is not within the range
that is expected.

Note: The period is the time in seconds for one cycle at a specific frequency. The period is defined as
1/frequency in Hz.

FMI 09 - Abnormal update

FMI 09 pertains to the communication between the electronic controls on the Cat Data Link. FMI 09
occurs when an electronic control is not able to receive information from another electronic control.
Also, when the electronic control expects to receive information.

FMI 10 - Abnormal rate of change

FMI 10 occurs when a signal changes faster than the expected rate. FMI 10 occurs when a signal
changes slower than the expected rate.

Example - The signal from the transmission output speed sensor indicates that the machine is
accelerating faster than can occur during an actual operation.

FMI 11 - Failure mode not identifiable

FMI 11 occurs when the electronic control identifies more than one FMI as being responsible for a
single problem.

FMI 12 - Bad device or component

FMI 12 describes the following condition: An electronic control sends a signal to another electronic
module over a data link. The electronic control expects a response but the electronic control receives
no response or an incorrect response.

FMI 12 also describes the following condition: An electronic module is expected to send data
periodically but the electronic control does not send the data.

FMI 12 could also relate to a failed data link.

FMI 13 - Out of calibration

For a given mechanical condition, the electrical signal is not within the expected limits of the
electronic control.

FMI 14 "Parameter Failures" - This diagnostic code is set up for special circumstances for a
particular component. The FMI 14 troubleshooting procedure for the component will list the possible
conditions that can cause this code.
