Subject Science and Math

Grade 4
Level

Learning SCIENCE SOL:

Objective
4.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the
nature of science by planning and conducting investigations in which
c) appropriate instruments are selected and used to measure length, mass, volume, and
temperature in metric units;
i) data are collected, recorded, analyzed, and displayed using bar and basic line graphs;
4.6 The student will investigate and understand how weather conditions and phenomena
occur and can be predicted. Key concepts include
b) weather measurements and meteorological tools;

MATH SOL:

4.14 The student will

Content Knowledge

a) collect, organize, and represent data in bar graphs and line graphs;
b) interpret data represented in bar graphs and line graphs; and
c) compare two different representations of the same data (e.g., a set of data
displayed on a chart and a bar graph, a chart and a line graph, or a pictograph and
a bar graph).

In this activity, my students are going to use KidsZone Create a graph to create a Line Graph and a Bar Graph.
Pedagogy Planning

Activity Within the Science Unit “Weather Phenomena”, combined with the Mathematics Unit “Collecting,
Representing, and Organizing Data”, the students will record the daily temperature in a table to
later create a graph.
In order to promote class discussion, the teacher will let students decide which two graphs to
create to represent their data. The Web2.0 tool KidsZone has five different graphs to choose from
along with an online tutorial. While the students work on their graphs, the teacher is able to
observe and help students if needed.
Pedagogy

After the creation of the graph, the students need to email their result to the teacher. During class
discussion, the teacher will show the different graphs on the whiteboard to interpret the date and
to compare the different graphs.

Directions In fourth Grade, the children are old enough to use Google tools and have a google classroom to
for Use go to.
1. Go to your Math Google Classroom and go the “Create a graph” assignment.
2. Click on the link provided KidsZone.
3. Choose a graph to represent your temperature data from our Science project.
4. Choose a design and enter your data (see the tabs on the side).
(I would add a screenshot to their google classroom)
5. The Preview-tab is a helpful tool to check how your graph looks like. Use it often while creating
your graph!
6. Once your first graph is completed, save your graph and email it to me.
7. Create your second graph following steps 1-6.
