If I had been with a disability, it would have been difficult, that is to say, if at this time for
the things of life I had to use a wheelchair, I would not be able to assimilate it, because I

2. HOW DOES HER CONDITION AFFECT HER DAILY ACTIVITIES AND

HOW DOES SHE DEAL WHIT IT?

She is affected by her disability in daily activities because she is unable to

write quickly, has difficulty navigating the lifts, occasionally hits people,
constructs and extreme weather conditions makes her need more time to
Get to the different places. Relationships with people are a bit complicated.

3. WHAT IS HER ATTITUDE TOWARDS LIFE? DOES SHE WILL

DISABLED FROM CERTAIN ACTIVITIES?

Her attitude towards life is of a woman warrior, fighter and without fear of
anything. Because of her illness there are certain activities that she can not
perform, but the greatest disability is in her mind and she struggles to fulfill
and do everything she wants, regardless of what others think and say.

HOW WOULD YOUR LIFE BE DIFFERENT IF YOU WERE

HANDICAPPED AND HAD TO USE A WHEELCHAIR? WHAT WOULD
BE DIFFERENT FOR YOU?

In fact, it would be a pretty strong change and everything would change. If

she were disabled, she would have emotional and psychological problems.

If I were disabled, my whole life would change. It would be like starting a

new life with many stumbles, facing the world and every day struggling to
get ahead.

If I were disabled, I would have to leave behind everything I was before and
look for new ways to get ahead and get things done.

 What does Ashley do for a living?

Ashly sings at certain times of the day and has to leave her bedroom earlier than
usual.

 How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she
deal with it?

She finds it difficult to write fast and for the extreme weather it takes Ashley a few
minutes more to go to classes in the snow. She has to deal with the guys who look
at her with fear, but she lets go with the flow.

 What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain
activities?

Her attitude is positive in front of life. She feels able to swim and she leaves people
high and dry, because many people believe that she can´t do it.

She feels able to transfer to her bed. If she didn´t have that positive attitude toward
life, she would have failed in all the situations that come up daily.
She feels incapacitated to do certain activities like running, she doesn´t know what
that feeling is.

She would want to know what it feels like to walk or run. If she hadn´t been lucky
enough to have her parents by her side, she wouldn´t have been able to learn to
do many other things.

 How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to
use a wheelchair? What would be different for you? (Use mixed
conditionals in the answer).

My life would be completely different if I didn´t have my body functioning normally,

since in many aspects of life we have to use our limbs and senses to do different
daily activities. But I think that many limitations are in our mind, we always have the
open mind to learn new things, to adapt to the changes and that nothing affects our
determination to get ahead.

QUESTIONS:

1. What does Ashley do for a living?

2. How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she deal with it?
3. What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain activities?
4. How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to use a wheelchair? What would be
different for you? (Use mixed conditionals in the answer).

Don’t forget:

 Use mixed conditional sentences (at least 4 examples), the idioms, vocabulary and ideas about flexibility and
adaptability studied in this learning activity (at least 8 words from the vocabulary).
 Remember to use connectors and punctuation.

o What does Ashley do for a living?

Ashley studies social communication at the University of Northern Iowa and

lives near college with her peers.

o How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she deal
with it?

She is a cheerful person but due to her condition it is difficult for her to do
things as quickly as the other partners, for example in writing. Also the
weather is cold and when the rainy days are difficult to mobilize for it so you
must leave home early to arrive on time to the university. Her social
relationships are not the best since the boys do not look for her and she feels
sorry for her.

o What is your attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain
activities?

Perhaps she has at times felt incapable but with mental strength and
positivism make her achieve her goals. Many times people believe that she can
not do it because of her condition but she does it and is able to swim, sit in
her bed and go to the bathroom. And she feels incapacitated in activities such
as running and walking exercises but still always puts force of will on every
thing she does every day. It is admirable.

o How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to
use a wheelchair? What would be different for you?

If I should use a wheelchair and be handicapped, my life would be completely

different. I think there are limitations but not impediments, for example I
could not play football normally, running, walking, exercising and cycling but
still there are sports and equipment for people with disabilities and I think
that is a good option not to fall into the routine. I believe that everything is in
the faith and the strength of will that we put to each activity that we carry
out.

RE: Perfectly abled life...

1. What does Ashley do for a living?

She studies general communication and she tries to do all the things a normal person does
because of her great courage and her ability to be determined.

2. How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she deal with it?

Ashley's disability, although she limits her severely and only poses more obstacles, her
focus on her goals has allowed her to live as normally as possible within her motor
disability. It has cost her an arm and a leg to be able to adapt to life and fend for her, but
although it usually costs more time than other people, she does, because she is always ready
to go the extra mile.

3. What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain activities?

There are some activities that although they are very common for us, they cost more than
normal or simply their disability does not allow them to do them, some like walking,
swimming or writing fast, and it is something that I personally admire a lot, because if I
were her , Surely I would not be so independent.

Although it seems that life itself left Ashley in a high and dry situation with her disability,
she simply smiles, adapts and tries to do everything herself, no matter what other people
think. If she did not spend so much time on some basic activities, she could improve her
social skills with other people.

4. How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to use a
wheelchair? What would be different for you? (Use mixed conditionals in the answer).

If I were disabled, my life would be very different. Well, if I were in a wheelchair for
example, I would not move well, because in my country there is little infrastructure for this
type of people. It is also true that if I was disabled and in a wheelchair, I would not be as
happy as I am now, for I do not have that mental strength of Ashley. I admire her seriously.

1. What does Ashley do for a living?

She is a senior at the university of Nothern Iowa where she studies general communication

2. How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she deal with it?

She cannot walk. She uses her wheelchair and tries to do the most of daily things.
Nevertheless, she has to face some setbacks such as extreme weather and dealing with
some peers, some things take her much longer than other people, so she has to invest more
time and effort on those.

3. What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain activities?

She considers that her condition does not limit her do to things instead, she has to
accommodate to them. But she thinks that her condition affects her relationship with other
people, especially with gays, but she knows that she is a person like another, she uses her
wheelchair because she need it, but it doesn’t change who she is.

4. How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to use a
wheelchair? What would be different for you? (Use mixed conditionals in the answer).

I think that a disability is a very hard situation, especially in non-developed countries

because here we don’t have enough facilities to help people to integrate themselves in the
society and do all tasks by themselves. Therefore, if I had a disability I would stay at home
most of the time to feel more secure. However, it would be a challenging situation too, that
would extract the better of me, and probably I would enroll in some movement to improve
the situation of people with some type of disability. If I had a handicap, I would try to study
a lot to know more about the causes of those problems and try to find solutions to deal with.
If I had a disability, I would have studied some related to that, and maybe I would be more
open-minded and I would have more determination to achieve my goals.

Good job Vilma! Thank you for giving your opinion on Ashley's life and how she manages her daily
routine in a wheelchair. It is a fact that you were able to combine conditionals and the vocabulary to
express your ideas about this interesting example of adaptability.

- What does Ashley do for a living?
She studies general communication and tries to do all the things a normal person does
because of their great value and their ability to be determined.

- How does your condition affect your daily activities and how do you deal with it?
Ashley's disability, although severely limited and only poses more obstacles, her focus on
her goals has allowed her to live as normally as possible within her motor disability. It has
cost her an arm and a leg to be able to adjust to life and defend herself from it, but although
it usually costs more time than other people, she does, because she is always willing to go
the extra mile.

-What is your attitude towards life? Do you feel disabled from certain activities?
There are some activities that although they are very common for us, they cost more than
normal or simply their disability does not allow them to do, some like walking, swimming
or writing fast, and it is something that I personally admire a lot, because if I were her,
Would not be so independent.

-How would your life be different if you were disabled and had to use a wheelchair? What
would be different for you? (Use mixed conditionals in the answer).

I am a disabled person, and I know that my life is different. Because I feel that I am a weak
person before the others, but every day I try to go ahead and not let some misfits look at me
as a strange animal since we are a very large community that deserves the same rights as
the others. I'm from being Colombians, we need to love each other. I admit Ashley has a lot
of mental strength and I know that it feels admirable. I feel proud to be like God brought
me to the world. Ashley is an example for all.

1. What does Ashley do for a living?

Ashley studying General Communication in University Northen Iowa.

2. How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she deal
with it?

Her condition affects hers activities because she can not do many activities like the
others. She has to adjust to her routines to go to study in her wheelchair, take
elevators or cross streets. But it's all about habit, she handle that situation and
knows it's attitude question.

3. What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain
activities?

Ashley thinks the clue is laughing at yourself and making jokes about everything.
Her condition made her an open-minded and give and extra mile.

We all have many problems, but nothing compares to a disability. Ashley proves
that nothing is an impediment, and we have to be grateful with life, and understand
that all problems have a solution. So it's time to do not worry about insignificant
issues.

4. How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to use a
wheelchair? What would be different for you?

It would be a very difficult moment in my life, I think I would think that life does not
make sense, because it would stop doing all the activities that I usually do on my
day. My family would have to watch out for me all the time. However I think that
over time everything
would exceed and learn to live with happiness with disability, just as Ashley lives.

What does Ashley do for a living? She is studying in the university the race of social
communication, she is living close to the university with other companions.
1. How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she deal with it?
It affects your daily activities when you try to walk, it also affects some of your motor skills
in things that most people can do, many things they can’t do on their own, but have adapted
to these situations, it is a bit difficult for her to write fast when she is in college, The
climatic conditions in which they live are extreme in winter to mobilize is a challenge,
relationships or friendships are a little complicated for her.
1. What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain activities? If I
had been with a disability, it would have been difficult, that is to say, if at this time for the
things of life I had to use a wheelchair, I would not be able to assimilate it, because I have
already done things for myself, a change so strong could not bear it, I would get very
depressed and I would not know if I would continue with my life.
1. How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to use a
wheelchair? What would be different for you? (Use mixed conditionals in the answer).
If I were disabled, many of the things I do today would change a lot because I could not
ride a bike anymore. I love riding bicycles, I love running and playing football, I do not
think I can stand to deprive myself of these things.

 What does Ashley do for a living?

Ashley sings at certain times of the day and has to leave her bedroom earlier than
usual.

 How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she deal with
it?

She finds it difficult to write fast and for the extreme weather it takes Ashley a few minutes more to
go to classes in the snow. She has to deal with the guys who look at her with fear, but she lets go
with the flow.
 What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled from certain
activities?

Her attitude is positive in front of life. She feels able to swim and she leaves people
high and dry. Because many people believe that she can`t do it. She feels able to
transfer to her bed. If she didn`t have that positive attitude toward life, she would have
failed in all the situations that come up daily. She feels incapacitated to do certain
activities like running, she doesn`t know what that feeling is.

She would want to know what it feels like to walk or run, If she hadn`t been lucky
enough to have her parents by her side, she wouldn`t have been able to learn to do
many other things.

 How would your life be different if you were handicapped and had to use a
wheelchair? What would be different for you? (Use mixed conditionals in
the answer).

My life would be completely different if I didn`t have my body functioning normally,

since in many aspects of life we have to use our limbs and senses to do different daily
activities. But I think that many limitations are in our mind, we always have the open
mind to learn new things, to adapt to the changes and that nothing affects our
determination to get ahead.

• How do you react when you have to interact with a handicapped person?

My attitudes is totally normal towards her, but at the same time it is also of service,
since that person may need my help at any time.

 How can you contribute to improve the life of handicapped people?

I can contribute to improving the lives of people with disabilities, with my service in the
things that I may need.

I can contribute with my emotional support, it is important that you find ways to enjoy
your own life and feel that you can make a significant contribution to the world around
you despite your disability.
