Should It be served with Death Penalty or Not?
In the past few years, there were so many crimes happened. Narcotics, murder,
rape and etc. had happened in some part of the world not except in Indonesia. More than
30 crimes including corruption could get a death penalty in Indonesia. However only
some of them were applied to the highest number for drugs cases in the past 10 years.
Proponents of the death penalty say it is an important tool for preserving law
(pelaksanaan hukum) and order (ketertiban), deterring (menghalang) crime, and costing
less than life imprisonment. They argue that retribution (hukuman setimpal) honors the
victim, helps console grieving families (keluarga duka), and ensures that other
perpetrators (pelaku) of heinous crimes have less opportunity to cause future crime.
The president Muslimat NU Khofifah Indarparawansah stated, “what the
government has done with the death penalty is actually an appropriate step in order to
eradicate the drugs dealer”.
Opponents of capital punishment say it has no deterrent effect (efek jerah) on
crime, wrongly gives governments the power to take human life, and perpetuates
(memperburuk) social injustices by disproportionately targeting people of color (racist)
and people who cannot afford good attorneys (classist). They say lifetime jail sentences
are a more severe and less expensive punishment than death.
“In fact, the number of drugs cases increased up to 46.537 in 2017 or 57.6 times
higher than 2016 that is 807 cases, despite the reality, Indonesia executed four drugs
dealer in the past year”. Said the executive director of AII, Usman Hamid. According to
the data has been showed by Usman Hamid it showed that the death penalty actually
didn’t eradicate crimes.
