4. Installation of FTTx Planner
a) Download program package from the website:
https://ksavinetworkinventory.com/en/download-geospatial-network-inventory-free/
b) Extract GNI_FREE_xx.zip archive
c) Copy files from .qgis2 catalog to your own .qgis2 catalog (np. /home/username/.qgis2)
d) Install python libraries if they are not installed:
scipy (https://www.scipy.org/install.html)
openpyxl (https://openpyxl.readthedocs.io/en/default/) (optional)
e) Start plannerFttx.qgs file from Planner FTTx catalog
f) Turn on WorkContextTracer and GNIPlannerFTTH plugins in QGIS plugin manager

g) After plugins installation, Processing Toolbox should include: QuickOSM, Scipy Point
Clustering, Gni Planner FTTH providers and “FTTH/GPON planning wizard” models.

5. Planning process
The short video showing efficient usage of FTTx Planner is available on
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMXqBbaJDiRbbcdG7lTCOOouPz7vzDLoR.

Work in plannerFtth.qgs starts from creating or opening work context by

‘WorkContextTracer’ plugin. The work context groups operations made during the planning network
process and generate the individual reports.

When you open the created WorkContext, it appears in the bar of WorkContextTracer plugin.

Next chapters introduce actions, which should be done in each process step. Steps are made
by wizards as models in Processing Toolbox.

You can find steps 1-3 in Processing Toolbox → Models → FTTH/GPON planning wizard and the next
steps are in Processing Toolbox → Gni Planner FTTH → FTTH/GPON planning wizard.

The FTTH planner has alternative versions of step 1 and 2.

The decision which step 1 to take depends on whether the user has input data or not. Step 2 uses
other algorithms to allocate points to group.

5.1. Step [1 – 2] Prepare vector data
a) Select an area you want to include in the planning network process. For selection, use
a polygon layer. You can use existing layers like commune, city areas or create your
own demand area.

b) Execute first step “[step 1] create GPON demand and route line from OSM”

c) In field “Work area” choose polygon layer with planning area. If the layer includes
more than one polygon, use a selection tool and select only planning areas.
d) After the step is finished, new layers appear in Layers panel. They are the inputs for
the next step.
e) Execute second step “[step 2] hierarchical clustering and connection GPON demand
to route line”. Output layers from first step are the inputs for this step.

f) The result of two steps is prepared data set containing clustered address points with
an numeric attribute of demand for fiber.

5.2. Step [3] Propose a preliminary network plan
a) From separate layer with OLT location, select one object that will be root point of
planned network.

b) Remember to snap OLT to the vertex of the object of cable routing layer (layer
produced by previous step). The layer must create connected graph (in topological
sense).
c) If you do not have separate layer with OLT location, follow the instruction.
d) Add new point layer.
e) Add point which is OLT node and snap it to the vertex of the cable routing layer.
f) Select it.

g) Execute third step „[step 3] high level design GPON network”. Input layers are the
outputs from the last step and layer with OLT location. In the field: Potential node
places you can add potential nodes location if you have them. These can be manholes
or poles.
The field: Path cost per unit allows you to indicate a field with the cost of a path.

h) The results are new layers appeared in Layers panel, which must include generated
data. You can make a style that colors nodes depending on their type.

5.3. Step [4] Build network plan
a) Execute fourth step „[step 4] design network”. Parameters layers are: output layers
from last step for nodes and cables, demand layer from step 2 and optional input
attributes (ID and address of demand layer).
You can select an option that adds a second level splitter. Depending on the value
entered in the field: Second level splitter fill factor, the second splitter will be placed
either further or closer to OLT.

b) After the step is finished, in pricing_line and pricing_point layers objects will be
created which represent cables and nodes respectively. By automatically generated
new objects’ attributes, it is possible to start pricing analysis of planned network.

c) Remember that this two layers are persistent and store in DB the data from all
planning processes. Previous layers are only temporary. If they overlap and you want
to see only specific of them, you can apply a filter using the WorkContext name or
version.
d) After the step 4, in vw_pricing_link view objects will be created which show the
semgents with information on the quantities of fibres used and the fibres split. They
contain the proposed locations for placement of splitters.

6. Analysis result
a) Generate report with data spreadsheet of used cables on planning area.

b) In the first tab, named by work context, there is a set of all created data in the work
context.
c) In tab named “serving area” there is list of demand points assigned to “final nodes”
(serving point).
d) In tab named „cost_distribution” there is data allowing to count/compare final nodes
connection costs.
e) In tab named “splitter” there is information on splitters
f) In tab named “loss” there is table of fiber track attenuation

You can also generate this report using a wizard "[step] Generate report". You can
save it if you need it.

7. Printing maps
It is possible to print maps with objects representing cables and network connections. The
‘Automatic grid’ tool is helpful here, as it generates regular grid. To print the map:

1. Select a line objects you want to print (e.g. pricing line)

2. Run the Automatic grid tool

3. Select the linear layer on which you have selected items.

4. Sheets have been created and will be printed later. To do this open ‘Composer Manager’.
There is a map template on an A4 sheet on a scale of 1:1000.

You can edit the contents of the map, its descriptions and legends using various options in the
window on the left. The contents of the map from Canvas Map are displayed with ‘Preview Atlas’.
After you have prepared the maps, you can print them.

8. Advanced usage of FTTx Planner
The FTTx Planner tool also gives the opportunity to customize it to suit users specific needs.
The whole tool is open source software that can be analyzed, used and modified by the user.

For users, whose the short instruction of basic process usage presented in the documentation
is not sufficient, we suggest an on-line training of capabilities of our FTTx network planning tools. The
training includes:

 defining user planning area,

 manipulation of proposed nodes,
 use of alternative cable routing layer (e.g. civil infrastructure network, parcel
boundaries),
 using of user’s own source of demand data

9. Further steps (Design, Build, Lease, Deliver,

Maintain)
If you are interested in further steps of use just planned network visit
https://ksavinetworkinventory.com.

The Geospatial Network Inventory system enables telecom operator to efficiently and
optimally manage its network inventory within normal network activities. The result of planning steps
is used by further operations such as:

 Detailed network design for outside and inside plant with full cost estimation and
design documentation generation
 Network build with bill of material generation including all resources and services
used utilized
 Network infrastructure sharing via lease contracts on whole levels of network (civil
infrastructure, cables, fibers, equipment, collocation space, transmission services)
 Service delivery on B2C and B2B markets with install documentation generation
 Network maintenance with planned and incidental field works supported by SLA
contracts
