Meiosis Project

Introduction
Meiosis is a type of cell division that occurs only in reproductive cells. Meiosis produces gametes, which are sex
cells that contain half of an organism’s normal number of chromosomes.
Your task is to think of a creative way to demonstrate meiosis. You can create a flip book, a cartoon, a poster, write
a story (with pictures), make a music video, make a model, etc. You may work with a partner or on your own.
Your project must be school appropriate. You will turn in this paper with your assignment.

Project Requirements
Your project must include the following items:
1. Your project must have a creative title.
2. Drawings, models or pictures of meiosis (8 phases) and interphase – drawings must be colored!
3. A written description of each phase of meiosis in your own words.
4. Label the following on your project at least once:
a. centrioles
b. centromere
c. homologous chromosome
d. spindle fibers
e. sister chromatids
f. nuclear membrane
g. cell membrane
5. Your project must be presented in a neat and organized manner. (good grammar, clear and easy to read, etc.)
6. Your project should be creative and demonstrate your understanding of the process of meiosis. You can earn
up to two extra credit points for overall quality.

Post-Project Requirements
7. Answer the following questions:

a. Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis.

Mitosis Both Meiosis
b. Explain two ways in which meiosis increases genetic variation.

c. Define non-disjunction and describe its potential results.

8. This sheet must be turned in with your project. If you are working with a partner, each partner needs to have
their own grading sheet. Your grade will be recorded on this sheet.
9. Your project may either be submitted on paper or digitally (if appropriate). Remember to include your name
and your partner’s name (if you have one). If you submit your project digitally, you still need to turn in this
sheet.

We will work on our projects in class for the next few days. Any work not completed in class is your
responsibility. Your project will be due Monday, December 4 at the beginning of class. It is worth 25 points and is
a separate grade from your binder check. This form will be returned to you and will go in the binder check as a
regular assignment.
