PART A — (10  1 = 10 marks)
Answer ALL questions.
1. Let A and B be the independent events and P1
and P2 be the probabilities of their happening.
What is the chance that both A and B happen?
2. Give an example of a Discrete Random variable.
3. What is the variance of Binomial distribution?
4. Write down the pdf of exponential distribution.
5. What is the value of the coefficient of correlation
between the two variables x, y if the correlation
is perfect and positive?
6. What is meant by non-linear regression?
7. What is meant by critical region?
8. What are the classification of analysis of variance?
9. Define analysis of variance.
10. Define time series analysis.
PART B — (5 × 5 = 25 marks)
Answer any FIVE questions.
11. Four persons are choose at random from a group
containing 3 men, 2 women and 4 children. Show
that the chance that exactly two of them will be
10
children is .

12. State and prove Baye’s theorem.
13. The density function of a random variable X is
given by f ( x )  kx (2  x ) , 0  x  2 . Find K and
its mean.
14. The mean and variance of a binomial variate are
8 and 6. Find P ( X  2) .
15. The coefficient of rank correlation of marks
obtained by 10 students, in English and
Economics was found to be 0.5. It was later
discovered that the difference in ranks in the two
subjects obtained by one student was wrongly
taken as 3 instead of 7. Find the correct coefficient
of rank correlation.
16. In a sample of 400 burners there were 12 whose
internal diameters were not within tolerance. Is
this sufficient evidence for concluding that the
manufacturing process is turning out more than
2% defective burners. Take   0.05 .
17. State the uses of a time series analysis.

PART C — (4 × 10 = 40 marks)
Answer any FOUR questions.

18. A factory produces a certain type of output by

three types of machines. The respective daily
production figures are Machine I : 3,000 units,
Machine II : 2,500 units and machine III : 4500
units.
Past experience shows that 1% of the output
produced by machine I is defective. The
corresponding fraction of defective for the other
two machines are 1.2% and 2% respectively. An
item is drawn at random from the day’s production
run and is found to be defective. What is the
probability that it comes from the output of
(a) Machine I (b) Machine II (c) Machine III?

19. The normal probability curve with mean  and

standard deviation  . State the properties of a
normal curve.

20. Fit a straight line of Y on X from the following

data :
X: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Y: 2 1 3 2 4 3 5

21. In a survey of 200 boys of which 75 were
intelligent, 40 had educated fathers. While 85 of
the unintelligent boys had uneducated fathers. Do
these figures support the hypothesis that educated
fathers have intelligent boys? (Value of  2 for 1 df
is 3.841)

22. In a laboratory experiment, two samples gave the

following results :
Sample Size Sample mean Sum of squares of
deviation from the mean
1 10 15 90
2 12 14 108
Test the equality of sample variances at 5% level
of significance.

23. Calculate seasonal indices for each quarter from

the following percentages of whole sale price
indices to their moving averages.
