Conclusion

The concept of Smart Neighbourhood is the part of Smart Cities that has been named both as
challenge and an opportunity for cities. This study emphasises that in case of a
neighbourhood development, a smart and uniform methodology should be developed to
address the smart dimensions of a neighbourhood and help to explore these challenges and
opportunities. Moreover, the study is enforced with the literature review of how
sustainability, ICT and behavioural aspects are embedded in Smart Neighbourhood
initiatives.

Smart Neighbourhood is connected and supported by shared and interoperable equipment and
infrastructure, therefore compatible with multiple combined services to the benefit of the
people.

Two developments have been explored that are pushing new strategies for governance
towards sustainable development. The first is the argument for cities being the main driver for
sustainable development. The reason behind this argument are that on the one hand, cities are
responsible for a major amount of the use of vernacular resources and on the other hand cities
have the ability to adopt policies to local circumstances hence they can be more effective in
reducing the use of resources. The second development, which is argued for both by
governance theorists and by policy documents about working in networks.

By use of social media and networking, smart neighbourhood can be realized without
investing too much in technology and too much in project cost, but capitalizing on
community efforts and social sustainability and reduce various inequalities.

Smart Neighbourhood present an approach to urban planning in order to make cities ‘smarter’
by improving issues such as mobility and sustainability by means of investing in
technological innovations. This proposed project focuses specifically on the sustainability
components of Smart Neighbourhood.

The involvement of wide range of actors is required as to achieve transitions, all of these
actors need to collaborate and implement changes.

The main challenge experienced during the project was in engaging the citizens to be active
and to participate in the activities in the neighbourhood. The careful design of technology and
activities that utilize the technology is an important factor in the success of Human Smart
Neighbourhood and creating opportunities for citizen driven social innovation.

Social, Economic and Environmental sustainability can be brought in by integrating increased

participatory role of communities with social network sites for interacting, connecting to each
other, raising voice, doing things and set wheel rolling. It is clear from various examples that
communities of different groups can connect at city level or the regional level for mutual
learning. In the future specific factors, indicators, benchmarks, measures and evaluation tools
of methodology have to be fully investigated. Subsequently, it has to be considered that
different cities have different needs and face unique challenges. Therefore, the proportion of
traditional and ICT-based measured can be different and even the solutions to evaluate the
measures can be specific. It is through Smart Neighbourhood concept only by which we can
bring transformation in reality in India and various other countries.
